Whilst visiting the main museum at Lidice a member of staff mentioned there was a 20 minute film in English at The Gallery. Most people visit the main site and never go to The Gallery. So I decided to pay it a visit. You walk past the car park and into the new Lidice along a wide carriageway. At the end of this road is 50 year old Gallery. I thought it would be quiet and was right, being the only visitor. A member of staff took me upstairs to view the 20 minute film. When I came downstairs the staff insisted I go into a room to view some of the works. The museum has a collection of art and sculptures from around the world that has been donated spread over two floors. There is also a large collection of paintings by children from around the world. If you enjoy modern art make sure you visit the Gallery before leaving Lidice plus you can see the new town.

The main museum at Lidice is located in the information centre and charges a fee for admission. The staff will ask details of your home town for their records and will advise you when a film of the era is available for viewing in your language. At the end of the film you move into the next part of the museum which has a number of audio/video displays that are available in different languages. It takes about an hour to view all the available material. No photography is allowed in this museum. There are 2 other buildings with written and visual displays to view and photography is allowed. About 10 minutes walk away in the new village of Lidice there is The Gallery that has a film lasting 20 minutes plus displays of modern art.

The rose garden was created in 1955 at the instigation of the English Lidice will live association. The garden has been altered a couple times since its creation the latest being in 2002. The gardens are 1.55 hectares in size and contain 21,000 roses with some 200 different varieties. During my visit there were a number of gardeners hard at work maintaining the gardens. The gardens have a number of places to sit and contemplate the terrible events that took place.

One of the most moving places at Lidice is looking at the memorial to the murdered children. This was a project that spanned 30 years. It was first started in 1969 by the sculptor Marie Uchytilov who died suddenly in 1989. By 1989 due to a lack of donations the memorial had only been completed in plaster and 3 figures cast in bronze that had been paid for by Marie Uchytilov. Her husband completed the rest of the work which was finished in 2000. The 82 figures are life sized and consist of 42 girls and 40 boys ranging in age between 1 to 16 years who are looking towards where the village stood. When it rains the life like children look as if they are crying.
