fancy door-handles in Czechia by globetrott When travelling through Czechia you really should make sure you will not oversee the great and fancy door-handles of castles and former palaces. Mostly they are by itself great works of art ! These door-handles on both sides are made in the shape of a turque, beeing attacked by a raven. The bigger part of my picture combination is to be found in Hluboka nad Vlatvou and it is about 40 cm high. This scene with the raven , picking out the eye of a turque is also part of the emblem of the Schwarzenberg-family. The smaller picture of my pic-combination is a dolphin, used as a door-handle in Chrudim at the local museum. Leave a Comment

Casanova, writing his memoirs by globetrott In the castle of Duchcov / Dux you may see the place, where Casanova spent the 13 last years of his life and is buried at an unknown place close to the church. Count Waldstein used to invite musicians, composers and other important people like Chopin,Bach,Beethoven,Haydn,Mozart,Goethe and the tzars Alexander I and Nikolaus I. Casanova came to Duchkov in 1785, and he became a good friend of count Waldstejn. Casanova was 60 years old at that time and he had plenty of troubles with his affairs at many places, so he was happy to get some sort of a "asylum" in Duchkov Organizing a library was a bit different at that time, when bookshops were not found in any small town. Casanova had a lot of time to write his memoirs "Histoire de ma vie" Today you may visit the livingrooms of Casanova, the chair, where he died and at the end of the guided tour you will be able to take a look into the library and see a wax-sculpture of Casanova... taste the local goodies ! by globetrott Valassky Trdelnik is a traditional pastry of Eastern Czechia and I may highly recommend to taste it ! It looks like an empty tube and has a thin, soft cake around the empty centre. this cake comes in different flavors like plums, cherries, honey, cinnamon etc. It is a good chance to get sticky fingers, as it is covered with sugar. You get a big roll for 25-40 Kronen depending on the food-stand, size and flavor. I had mine for several days inside my motorhome, outside of the fridge and it kept tasting fine for a week, although it gets rather hot inside the car sometimes. The best thing for the tourists is the fact, that the ladies at these food-stands always offer small sampels of Valassky Trdelnik, so you may decide for yourself, before you buy something ! It will be packed in a thin plastic-bag and was even too big for me to eat all at once. I saw the stand on my picture in Roznov pod radhostem, but that kind of pastry is to be found all over Czechia. Koprivnice - for all fans of Tatra-automobiles by globetrott Maybe 100 km east of Brno / Brünn you may visit a really interesting museum of Tatra-automobiles, planes and even a train. My favorite part of the museum was the section with the huge 4x4 trucks - well known for the ralley Paris-Dakar - and expedition-vehicles, beeing able to explore even the remotest places on earth. In the centre of my picture-combination you may see one of them - only 2 of that type were built for an expedition by Czech scientists across Asia in the late 50s. Tatra-automobiles are well known for the fact, that they tried to build aerodynamic bodies already a long time ahead of most other companies. You might need 2-3 hours to completely explore this great museum. The town itself is not very interesting, BUT the surroundings are, including Pustevne, Roznov pod Radhostem and Stramberk. You may get to Koprivnice by train or take road #48 / E462 till Pribor and drive south then on road #58. Leave a Comment

the wooden village and church in Roznov p.R. by globetrott The "Little wooden town / Drevene mestecko " in Roznov pod radhostem is a small village of maybe 20-30 buildings from all over Czechia, that had been rebuilt again around a small meadow, forming a traditional centre of a village. This museum was made in a special way, as all of the small wooden village is surrounded by a small wood and a wooden fence and you almost will not hear any car-trafic and have the feeling to be back in the times of the 17th - 19th century. It is a pity the weather was not perfect the day I visited Roznov pod Radhostem, but at least it did not rain. Leave a Comment

the big bone-chandelier in Sedlec by globetrott Once every year on November 1st - "All Saints Day" - there is a churchservice inside the bonechurch with only the candles burning. I am not sure, if this is open for tourists, as the space is quite limited and plenty of local people certainly might considder it a religious service and NO attraction for tourists. The big bone-chandelier in the middle of the church is the biggest of all these works of art, and it uses almost each sort of human bones. The chandelier still uses candles, while the rest of the church has electic light of course. I may imagine, it gives you a strange feeling to see these head-bones staring at you from the chandelier, when there is no electic light, but just the candles on the bone-chandelier ! Leave a Comment

In the Czech Republic we have "right-hand culture". It means: - we drive right - we usually walk on the right side of the street (I mean if you have to bypass someone going towards you, you do it right side) - in Prague metro escalator (stairs): people stay on the right side and people go on the left side - we shake right hands (except scouts and guides:-) etc. etc. Leave a Comment

Compulsory schooling, which began in 1774, lasts until the age of fifteen. .Those who satisfactorily complete this may apply for secondary education. Pupils can transfer to the gymn?zium general secondary school) Entry to the gymn?zium is by an entrance exam set by the school and provides a general academic education aimed at preparing students for higher education. Secondary vocational schools provide apprenticeship training in a range of manual skills, in courses ranging from one to three years (but mainly three years) and ending in a final exam and an apprenticeship certificate. These schools also organise four-year courses leading to highly skilled worker qualifications. The secondary technical schools sometimes provide lower-level secondary vocational education, as well as general and technical education; so over half of all students choose the vocational route, which lasts until the age of eighteen. There is, however, for historic reasons, little contact between the vocational training schools and enterprises, and certification is carried out by the school, not by an external body. The number entering secondary technical schools is rising while fewer are entering secondary vocational schools. Tertiary education is provided by three types of institution: higher professional schools which offer courses (from two to three and a half years) leading to qualifications in highly skilled technical fields university types, usually organised into faculties and offering education at bachelor, master's and doctoral levels non-university types, which mainly offer only bachelor study courses There is very little focus, official or unofficial, on lifelong learning and large gaps to be filled. Although there is a large number (around 1,800) of registered education/training institutions, with an average of eight accredited courses each, there is no legal provision for continuing education/training for adults. Hence there is little provision and no funding even to subsidise courses. Leave a Comment

Bride's car by Zajem My cousin invited my parents and me to come and see his wedding in Southern Moravia. It was very great celebration. BTW, how for whom, hehe. The wedding took a place at Januv hrad (Ian's castle) and the wedding reception took a place in Dolni Vestonice (Lower Vestonice), where my cousin's wife comes from. Many cars are decorated by the ribbon in the front part of car. The ribbon is led by the center of engine cove to the upper corners of car window. The bunch of flowers is fixed on the engine cove of bride's car. Leave a Comment
