Valassky Trdelnik - a great local pastry

by globetrott

Valassky Trdelnik is a traditional pastry of Eastern Czechia and I may highly recommend to taste it !It looks like an empty tube and has a thin, soft cake around the empty centre.this cake comes in different flavors like plums, cherries, honey, cinnamon etc.It is a good chance to get sticky fingers, as it is covered with sugar. You get a big roll for 25-40 Kronen depending on the food-stand, size and flavor.I had mine for several days inside my motorhome, outside of the fridge and it kept tasting fine for a week, although it gets rather hot inside the car sometimes. The best thing for the tourists is the fact, that the ladies at these food-stands always offer small sampels of Valassky Trdelnik, so you may decide for yourself, before you buy something !It will be packed in a thin plastic-bag and was even too big for me to eat all at once.I saw the stand on my picture in Roznov pod radhostem,...

A romantic village of old wooden houses

by globetrott

The "Little wooden town / Drevene mestecko " in Roznov pod radhostem is a small village of maybe 20-30 buildings from all over Czechia, that had been rebuilt again around a small meadow, forming a traditional centre of a village. This museum was made in a special way, as all of the small wooden village is surrounded by a small wood and a wooden fence and you almost will not hear any car-trafic and have the feeling to be back in the times of the 17th - 19th century. It is a pity the weather was not perfect the day I visited Roznov pod Radhostem, but at least it did not rain.

Watch out for fancy door-handles

by globetrott

When travelling through Czechia you really should make sure you will not oversee the great and fancy door-handles of castles and former palaces.Mostly they are by itself great works of art !These door-handles on both sides are made in the shape of a turque, beeing attacked by a raven. The bigger part of my picture combination is to be found in Hluboka nad Vlatvou and it is about 40 cm high. This scene with the raven , picking out the eye of a turque is also part of the emblem of the Schwarzenberg-family.The smaller picture of my pic-combination is a dolphin, used as a door-handle in Chrudim at the local museum.

All Saints Day inside the bone-church of Sedlec

by globetrott

Once every year on November 1st - "All Saints Day" - there is a churchservice inside the bonechurch with only the candles burning.I am not sure, if this is open for tourists, as the space is quite limited and plenty of local people certainly might considder it a religious service and NO attraction for tourists. The big bone-chandelier in the middle of the church is the biggest of all these works of art, and it uses almost each sort of human bones. The chandelier still uses candles, while the rest of the church has electic light of course.I may imagine, it gives you a strange feeling to see these head-bones staring at you from the chandelier, when there is no electic light, but just the candles on the bone-chandelier !

by patricia1.nunez

Oh yeahhhh you can be amazed all the weird fees you´ll encounter when traveling and this is one of them...while in Prague,,, we went to a family dining italian reastaurant,, some individual wrapped peanut were on the table,,, we decided to open two of them,, drinks menu didnt show prices so i ordered iced tea, my husband ordered beer, my friends ordered a coke .. then later while eating my friends ordered extra bread.... when the bill arrived we were surprise how long was the bill looked like a grocery ticket....charges were: 2 bags of peanuts we thought were complementary, 4 dinners, 4 drinks, my ice tea was more expensive than the other drinks...extra fee for the extra bread,,, taxes and silverware fee? we asked if was the gratuity, so they say no this is for the silverware usage!!! so we had to add 10%tip to that as well... make sure you ask first or read the menu at the entrance ...

Kofola! a soft drink to try

by jaybob71

Kofola is a soft drink that can only be discribed as something simular ro cola BUT do not be mistaken this is not an immitation of cola its a drink in its own right and is Kofola not Cola!!!Best tried on tap in a restarant or bar although the glass bottled stuff is just as good. The original is best but they now have several flavours out.

Tips in restaurants

by swetluska

We usually do not leave tip on the table, but directly round up the bill. When the waiter brings you the bill, you say the amount you wish to pay (i.e. bill is for 185 CZK, you say 200). It is common to give plus 5-10% according to your satisfaction with the service/meal. If you say nothing, you will receive the exact change. If you say "thank you" or "dekuji" when the waiter wants to give you the change, it is understood that the money has been left as a tip (i.e. bill is for 185 CZK, you give 200 banknote, (s)he wants to give you back 15, you say "thank you" and the waiter keeps those 15 as a tip).

na zdravi!

by AnitaCarrie

My 84 year old grandmother before she passed away, gave me some advice for this trip that I will never forget. I went to visit her before leaving, and she beckoned me over down close and said... "Aneet, while you are over there... don't drink the water... drink the beer! I always do!" And well I totally agree with her on that one. The beer is cheap for us and really the best beer I have ever had. And who wants to drink bubbly water anyway, yuck, I could never get used to that stuff. Although my friends were quick to point out that "Beer is yellow bubbly water" yeah whatever.Anyway, when drinking with Czechs there is something you should know. You MUST keep eye contact during toasts. In some places you raise your glass then tap the bottom to the table, and then drink, but that isn't such a big deal as keeping eye contact. And they will call you out if you don't look at them.

Weddings in my country

by Zajem

My cousin invited my parents and me to come and see his wedding in Southern Moravia. It was very great celebration. BTW, how for whom, hehe. The wedding took a place at Januv hrad (Ian's castle) and the wedding reception took a place in Dolni Vestonice (Lower Vestonice), where my cousin's wife comes from. Many cars are decorated by the ribbon in the front part of car. The ribbon is led by the center of engine cove to the upper corners of car window. The bunch of flowers is fixed on the engine cove of bride's car.
