Wedding III

by Zajem

...after having a lunch only fun follows. And in the time of cold evenings people enjoy wedding by dancing and some of them also play the guitar. yupeee! I think that bride's cousin Danushka from Slovakia was the most hyperactive about dancing :-). She almost didn't know what it ment to stop for a while and was dancing with boys and girls too, hehe. She's really good on it! In the pic, she is building the column of glases (this one was on the top) to show us what the custom amoung the boys in countryside of Slovakia is. There is more then only that building the botles. Look at the second pic. In the rhytm she was jumping by one leg over that glassed column. I can make you sure, that is not that easy like you suppose. Some botles were broken down :-).

Koprivnice - for all fans of Tatra-automobiles

by globetrott

Maybe 100 km east of Brno / Brünn you may visit a really interesting museum of Tatra-automobiles, planes and even a train. My favorite part of the museum was the section with the huge 4x4 trucks - well known for the ralley Paris-Dakar - and expedition-vehicles, beeing able to explore even the remotest places on earth. In the centre of my picture-combination you may see one of them - only 2 of that type were built for an expedition by Czech scientists across Asia in the late 50s.Tatra-automobiles are well known for the fact, that they tried to build aerodynamic bodies already a long time ahead of most other companies. You might need 2-3 hours to completely explore this great museum. The town itself is not very interesting, BUT the surroundings are, including Pustevne, Roznov pod Radhostem and Stramberk. You may get to Koprivnice by train or take road #48 / E462 till Pribor and drive south...

Meet Casanova in Duchcov / Dux

by globetrott

In the castle of Duchcov / Dux you may see the place, where Casanova spent the 13 last years of his life and is buried at an unknown place close to the church.Count Waldstein used to invite musicians, composers and other important people like Chopin,Bach,Beethoven,Haydn,Mozart,Goethe and the tzars Alexander I and Nikolaus I.Casanova came to Duchkov in 1785, and he became a good friend of count Waldstejn.Casanova was 60 years old at that time and he had plenty of troubles with his affairs at many places, so he was happy to get some sort of a "asylum" in DuchkovOrganizing a library was a bit different at that time, when bookshops were not found in any small town.Casanova had a lot of time to write his memoirs "Histoire de ma vie"Today you may visit the livingrooms of Casanova, the chair, where he died and at the end of the guided tour you will be able to take a look into the library and...

This is a BEER country

by sourbugger

The Czechs take their beer very seriously. Whilst some people (mainly on stag nights) just see it as a place to consume vast amounts for little money, one of the true joys of the country is sampling some of the excellent brews. All beers are brewed using the ancient purity laws that you get in Germany - so it is an entirely natural product, and for that reason less likely to induce a hangover.Plisner Urquell and Budweiser (nothing to to that much that comes from the USA) are perhaps the most well known, but my personal favourite in Gambrinus : it slips down a treat !If your not really a beer drinker, the thing to do is have the smallest measure available and treat drinking it as if you were tasting good wine vintages.

CZR Education System

by Svetobeznik

Compulsory schooling, which began in 1774, lasts until the age of fifteen. .Those who satisfactorily complete this may apply for secondary education. Pupils can transfer to the gymn?zium general secondary school) Entry to the gymn?zium is by an entrance exam set by the school and provides a general academic education aimed at preparing students for higher education. Secondary vocational schools provide apprenticeship training in a range of manual skills, in courses ranging from one to three years (but mainly three years) and ending in a final exam and an apprenticeship certificate. These schools also organise four-year courses leading to highly skilled worker qualifications. The secondary technical schools sometimes provide lower-level secondary vocational education, as well as general and technical education; so over half of all students choose the vocational route, which lasts until...

Right hand culture

by Zuzka

In the Czech Republic we have "right-hand culture". It means:- we drive right- we usually walk on the right side of the street (I mean if you have to bypass someone going towards you, you do it right side)- in Prague metro escalator (stairs): people stay on the right side and people go on the left side- we shake right hands (except scouts and guides:-)etc. etc.

They invented Pilsner!

by richiecdisc

Plzen is the birthplace of a style of beer, pilsner, that changed the beer world forever. In fact, when one normally thinks of beer today, it most closely resembles one in this classic style. For more, see richiecdiscPlzen

Strange Brew

by Bjorgvin

Becherovka, a Czech liqueur, was originally made in 1805 by a certain Josef Becher, pharmacist in Karlovy-Vary, and an English doctor by the name of Frobrig, but put on the market in 1807. It is said that just two people at the time in the whole world know the recipe for the herbal blend! It is a bittersweet, yellow herbal drink. It can be served both as an aperitif and a liqueur or mixed with tonic water.

Czech beer

by Bjorgvin

Czech beer is often praised as the world's best. Pilsner Urquell and Budweiser Budvar are two of the most famous, but there are many other good ones to choose from: Radegast, Staropramen and Gambrinus to name a few. Pivo is the Czech word for beer, tmave pivo (dark beer) or svetle pivo (light colored beer).
