    Visa, please!

    VISA LOGO

Favorite thing: Excuse me, it's more Czech than Jablunkov general tip - I will transfer it to my new Czech page, soon!

VISA is the most popular credit/debit card in use in Czech Republic. ATM cash and restaurants, horels etc. which accepted cards always accepted cards of VISA system. A little less accepted were cards of Matercard/Eurocard and Maestro systems. Hmm... they rarely accepted American Express and never Discovery cards (or I didn't find it) in Czech Republic.

Generally cards were accepted in all chain supermarkets, larger stores, petrol stations, larger hotels and restaurants (esp. in cities). In the countryside it worked different although cards were more and more accepted and at least there was often ATM cash nearby. Although sometimes I had some problems to find ATM cash in off the beaten path villages and towns - there were none even on large petrol stations.

    CHURCH TOWER CLOCK IN JABLUNKOV

Favorite thing: Excuse me, it's more Czech than Jablunkov general tip - I will transfer it to my new Czech page, soon!

Czech Republic belongs to Central European Time (CET) zone together with all adjacent countries:
    - Germany,
    - Austria,
    - Hungary,
    - Slovakia,
    - Poland.
No need to change time whenever you come from bordering countries.
It's GMT (Greenweech Mean Time = London, UK time) + one hour. The time is changed twice a year for summer time.

KATHY BY ATM CASH IN JABLUNKOV TOWN SQUARE

Favorite thing: I found two ATM cash in Jablunkov:
    1. In main town square (Marianske Namesti) - it accepted for sure bank cards of Visa, Eurocard/Mastercard and Maestro system.
    2. In front wall of Penny Market - it accepted my Visa cards.
Both ATM cash were operated non-stop (24h) and offered service in English language.

More and more stores, restaurants etc. accept credit cards usually Visa and Eurocard/Mastercard in Jablunkov. All groceries described in my shopping tips accepted my Visa cards, hotels and petrol stations as well.

    Appletown?

    APPLE TREE IN... APPLETOWN :-)

Favorite thing: Jablunkov is a little difficult name for non-Slavic folks, I suppose. Notice that the first "J" is pronaunced like "y" in "yes". The name derives from Czech world jabloko or so ("jablko" in Polish) which means an apple. But please don't ask natives how to get to... Appletown - 999 of 1000 will not undestand you :-).

    Why Jablunkov?
As I noticed, there were quite many apple trees in Jablunkov, indeed.
Try tasty apple juice whenever you are in Czech "Appletown"!

    No borders soon?

    by matcrazy1 Updated Feb 11, 2004

TO POLAND 7 KM (4 MI)

    Favorite thing: 1. BEFORE 1993
Jablunkov was a town in the middle of communist Czechoslovakia till 1990 and there was only one border crossing point to Poland in Cesky Tesin, 19 km (12 mi) northeast. Since 1990 Jablunkov was in Republic of Czech and Slovakia till 1993. One by one there were more, new small border crossing points to Poland put up around.

    2. 1993 - 30 April 2004
There was border crossing point to Slovakia located in Mosty u Jablunkova, approx. 10 km (6 mi) south.
I was surpriced to cross the border at this point first time. There were two seperate check-points: Czech and Slovak located a few kilometers away. Now, it changed a lot. Czechs built new, much better and faster highway which passed west of the village Mosty u Jablunkova.

    3. SINCE 1 MAY 2004
As the three countries (Czech, Poland and Slovakia) enter European Union on 1 May 2004 there will be no checkup on borders between them soon, first no customs checkup but still passport/ID checkup.
    What then?
As I know both countries (and Poland as well) are going to sign so called Schengen Treaty in 2006 (the therm not officially aproved yet) which means travelling with no passports for all EU citizens (ID instead) and with not border checkups (except in emergency). For foreign visitors it means one visa for all countries (so called Shengen visa) if needed.
