    Coal mining and steel production has always been main income sector of Ostrava and therefore you find a lot of remnants. Although mining within the city limits was stopped in 1994 a lot of factories are still left. At the tourist info in the town hall you can get information what to visit, if you are interested in industrial sights.

    • Ostrava is spread out over a large area, it's quite an industrial city and although it has some shopping areas, it probably isn't worth staying here for long.

    I found Ostrava difficult to meet people in. The ones who do speak english didn't appear to want to have anything to do with us. Great nightlife though, if you speak Czech.

    Ostrava is situated in the east of Moravia near the Polish and only a short train ride away from Zilina in Slovakia. If you plan to leave the Czech Republic via Ostrava check the timetable as the trains don't run so frequently.
