Church of St. Katharine in Ostrava - Hrabova Slight wooden church sacred to St. Katharine stood since 16.th century (and maybe sooner) on the village’s border of Ostrava – Hrabova. This wooden sheeting building was one of the oldest sights of folk architecture in area of Ostrava and since the time of its foundation it passed by complicated tectonic development. Primary building was single-nave with three-sides presbytery. Wooden joist ceiling covered nave and end of the church. Roof was wagon-headed. Factual time of the foundation is not known. Inscription with date 1564 reflects, that it was built before this date. Also it is not known when quadrilateral bell tower had been built in front of entrance into the church what was put together (again it is not known when) with the church then. Next design was the enclosure of bell tower and the south side of church by penthouse, originally opened penthouse, then closed penthouse. Last building design (annex of vestry of the south side of presbytery) was realized by complete repair of church in 1904 year. April 1st and 2nd 2002, church totally burn up. In the same year it was decided on re-edify of this building in scale and design what will be the same of design before burning up. In late of last year 2004 church was canonize and given to use. When I was today (Jan. 8th, 05) there, the church was open. Masses: Fri: 4:30 p.m., Sun: 8:30 a.m. Sightseeings: Thursadys 4:00 P.M. - 6:00 P.M. Sundays 2:00 P.M. - 4:00 P.M. How to get there? Map is here. Leave a Comment Address: Jestrabskeho street, Ostrava - HrabovaDirections: Road (Mistecka street - R 56) from the centre of Ostrava to Frydek-Mistek. EXIT 39 Ostrava -Dubina, direction Hrabova (part of Ostrava). After about 2 km you could see the building on the right and the parking lot is on the left.

Town hall - Silesian Ostrava by Zajem Town hall in Silesian Ostrava (was built 1911-1913) is the protected sight what you’ll find this town hall on the height by Tesinska street, on the right bank of Ostravice river. That building is work of art polish-ostravian architect Julius Vyslouzil who also devised decorative painting around tower clock and decorative plastered motives in the big meeting room. Town hall is loose-placed building with built-in quadratic tower equipped with a bay. The frontage is ended by pseudoreneissance gable with balustrade and is breached by three axes of three-pieces windows ended by arch on the floor. There’s portal with ionic stanchions in axis of the frontage. Entrance staircase will grip by steady arches and plastered decoration. Four marble poles sustain the main staircase. Building is built of bricks and has new frontage because this sight was restored in 2001-2002 years. Ceremonial room is used for weddings and, of course, because of its very good acoustic it is used for performances of classical music. There is installed the chime in tower of the town hall with strike. In one record melody can be caught by 48 bells. Special system for re-playing of melodies is installed at town hall in Silesian Ostrava and there can be set up up to 29 melodies. Thanks to place of town hall on the height you can hear the chime melodies, when you are on Masaryk’s quere - about 8 by walk. Not far away from the town hall you can find monument with poem of Czech poet Petr Bezruc (he lived in Ostrava), the bridge of Milos Sykora with statue of this man and the first tank what as the first one came over the bridge. If you come to down town, park your car just next by on the parking lot. Is not large but there aren't many cars. Leave a Comment Address: Tesinska street 35, Slezska OstravaPhone: +420 599 410 011Directions: From the center of the town over Sykora's bridge, then turn to right and the first crossing turn to left and then again turn to left. It is the largest mining museum in Czech Republic and definitely worth seeing. Opened daily, 9-18:00 hrs, there are three types of excursions (and of course prices - the most expensive is around 150 CZK for adults, children and students have discounts), each lasts one hour. All of them are with the guide, the english one is also available, but you have to book the guide in advance by mail or phone. The most interesting is without any doubt the undeground exhibition - just don't forget warm clothes :) The Landek area is also famous for finding many evidences of prehistoric settlement. What you will find there, are paths and places for relaxing. People, who live in the city, go for walk there, they have picnic in the grass there , also on the bank of the Ostravice river, as I saw.
