Czech Railway

The station is located in Nádražní Street, Moravian Ostrava. To reach the city centre you can take a tram or trolleybus.

From here, you can reach Prague and Warsaw in around 5 hours, Krakow in 4 hours, Katowice in 2hours and Bratislava in 4 hours. Czech trains are cheap but are a little on the slow side.

Smog situation

There are some days, when you can use the public transport in the city for free and legal.
Winter is the season for Ostrava, speaking about the main air pollution. You are informed by TV and radio and the main website of the city public transport, when smog situation announced is and the directorate of the city public transport gives free rides for passangers on the given days.

When you don't use your long-term card but short-time tickets as 15-minute, 60-minute and 24-hour you will not mark your ticket in the machine on the board. Anyway, all machines on trams, busses and trolleys are blocked to do so. Valid only inside the city of Ostrava.

Next, when the smog situation is announced for a given day, you will see these red cards with the "SMOG" title on them as my pic shows. It says: "SMOG. Don't mark your tickets ODIS in the tariff zones 1-4"

The park at the Leos Janacek Airport

There are two possibilties, how you can get by car from Ostrava to the airport or the opposite way.

From Ostrava take the highway No. D1 the way to Olomouc and Brno and leave at the exit No. 342 near Studenka. Easy follow direction to Studenka, Mosnov and then the airport.

Or go from Ostrava by road No. 58 the way Pribor and Novy Jicin and turn to the airport before comming to Mosnov.

Today (June 12, 2010) I went both ways by highway D1 Ostrava to the airport and back by No. 58. Although I used the highway it took me a bit longer due to repairing works of the bridge on the II/464 road . This bridge is partly closed and the traffic is controlled by the traffic lights. The works should finish on October 31st, 2010. The map

From Brno take the highway the way to Olomouc, Ostrava, change for speedway No. R46 at exit No. 230/1. Behind Olomouc continue by No. R35/D1. Leave the highway D1 at the exit No. 311 and follow the direction Novy Jicin, Pribor, Mosnov and the airport.

On border of Ostrava and Rychvald

After deciding to go to Ostrava by car and choosing "your" car in many car rentals in Prague use the highway D1 - Prague - Brno - Vyskov - then take the speedway R46 Vyskov - Prostejov - (Olomouc). Before you arrive in Olomouc, follow the direction Ostrava.
There new pieces of highway to Ostrava are being built and the entire part Vyskov - Ostrava D1 was finnished and given to use in 2010.
I don't know if you use this highway, because it can happen you will leave the highway for visiting towns around. :-)

Trams, troleys and buses in Ostrava

The trasport net is quite huge one and you can easily travel by trolleys, busses and trams inside of the city. You also can get to other vilages laying out of Ostrava by the city traffic and also by traffic operated by other companies as CSAD.

Town of Ostrava will offers you these types of tickets:
15 mins, 60 mins and 24 hous.
I mostly use tickets for 15 and 60 mins. You can get them in ticket vendors in the citycenter and at newsstands, too.
The price of 15-min ticket is 13.00 Kc (reduced price - 6.00 Kc) and 60-min ticket costs 21.00 Kc (reduced price - 10.00 Kc).
Both types of ticket are valid for the zone "Ostrava XXL" (zones No. 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 25). This is the city of Ostrava and contiguous towns and villages.

You can get 24-hour ticket for 59.00 Kc (reduced price - 29.00 Kc - children 6-15-year old), too, which is valid only for the zones 1, 2, 3, 4 in the city of Ostrava on all its lines of ODIS (Intergated transport system of Ostrava).

While the days of holidays, in the weekends, 5 people can travel for the only one 24-hour ticket, but only 2 of them can be 16-year and more older.

A bus/tram driver will only sell you a 60-minute ticket for 26,- Kc as "an additional sale".

Ostrava is divided into four main zones:
1 - centre
2 - slezska Ostrava
3 - Ostrava Zabreh
4 - Ostrava Poruba
In these zones the tickets are limited only by time, outside these zones the tickets are limited both by time and by number of zones you are going through.
Tickets:
15 minutes/1 zone
45 minutes/2 zones
60 minutes/3 zones
90 minutes/4 zones
105 minutes/5 zones
120 minutes/6 zones
From main railway station to the very centre it takes about 10 minutes (1 zone), from railway station Svinov to the centre about 15 minutes (1 zone).
When travelling in Ostrava you can use bus, trolleybus or tram. It is cheaper to buy tickets in tobacco stores or in automatic machines then at the driver's.
