Valtice / Feldsberg - south of Brno / Brünn by globetrott Valtice / Feldsberg is in a distance of just 7 Km from Lednice castle and the road between the 2 castles is the old alley dating back to the time, when the castles were built. The Liechtenstein family owned the castle for more than 550 years. Johann Fischer von Erlach was one of the most famous architects of his time. (some of his most famous buildings are : Karlskirche, Böhmische Hofkanzlei, Palais Trautson and Schönbrunn castle in Vienna and Kollegienkirche in Salzburg) In 1725 he started to reconstruct the castle of Valtice / Feldsberg in his typical baroque style. The castle will still need some repairs on the facade, but inside it looks great already and a part of it is used as a hotel - see my hotel-tips ! On my picture-combination : the castle taken with my extreme wide-angle lens and the townhall below on the left. For more infos and pics - just click on my link below !! Leave a Comment

Hruba Skala - 30km south of Liberec by globetrott Hruba Skala / Bohemian Paradise is a unique landscape with giant rocks of sandstone set in the most unique way... Bohemian Paradise is a perfect place to go hiking, biking or climbing. There is a tiny gorge between the giant stones, and it is leading up to the castle. At some places it is less than half a meter wide, but concrete-steps had been added for safe climbing up. The castle dates back to gothic times. Hruba Skala castle ( Zamek = castle ) is a hotel today, but it is also open for visitors against a small entrance-fee of 20 Kronen ( 0,7 Euro) and you may climb up the tower in order to have a perfect panorama-view. The closest trainstation is Karlovice ( in a distance of 5km) or you may take road #35 / E 442 from Liberec -Turnov and finally search for the small side-road after you have passed Karlovice. Cervena Lotha - north-east of C.Budejovice by globetrott Cervena Lhota is a lovely water-castle , 15km nort-west of Jindrichuv Hradec. This castle is often used by local people for their wedding-photos and it dates back to the 14th century. Around the castle there is a small lake and a large wood with plenty of hiking-paths. You may visit the castle inside daily except on mondays and the interior you will see dates back mainly to the 17th and 18th century. The road to Cervena Lotha is quite small and sometimes confusing because of missing signposts. Take road #128 from Jindrichuv Hradec to Destna and then it is another 5km on sideroads. NO train-connection to the castle !! Leave a Comment

Duchkov / Dux - the last home of CASANOVA by globetrott Duchcov castle / Schloss Dux was the place in Czechia, where CASANOVA spent the last 13 years of his life, writing his memoirs and working as a librarian for count Waldstein. What an end, Giacomo.... And he is buried somewhere on the former cemetery of Duchcov, but only a small inscription on the churchwall shows the czech spelling of his name : Jakob Casanova The castle was built in the 16th century in Renaissance-style and in the 18th century the count of Waldstejn bought the castle and rebuilt it in Baroque-style according to plans by Jean Baptiste Mathey. Count Waldstein used to invite musicians, composers and other important people like Chopin,Bach,Beethoven,Haydn,Mozart, Goethe and the tzars Alexander I and Nikolaus I. Casanova came to Duchkov in 1785, and he became a good friend of count Waldstejn. Casanova was 60 years old at that time and he had plenty of troubles with his affairs at many places, so he was happy to get some sort of a "asylum" in Duchkov Leave a Comment

Melnik - 30km north of Prague by globetrott The town of Melnik was built on top of a small mountain with strategic importance, as you could over-see the whole valley and the rivers Moldau / Vltava and Elbe / Labe that join right under that mountain. The castle dates back to the 9th century, was rebuilt several times and the way it looks today it was rebuilt in the 16th century with graffities of 1553. You may visit 10 rooms inside the castle, showing the Lobkowitz-Galery, a small museum about wine-culture and even a museum of the " history of Kinderwagen " ( Baby carriages ) When you see the castle from a big distance, you will get the impression the tower belongs to the castle, BUT in fact it is the church-tower and the castle's tower is much smaller. The church dates back to the 15th century, and you may walk up the tower in order to have a great panorama-view. There is a promenade around the castle that will give you a great panorama-view over the 2 rivers and the landscape around them. All of the small mountain is covered with vinyards, as the wine-production is quite important in that region. The origins of the old townhall of Melnik date back to the 14th century and it got a " more modern fassade " in the 18th century. Today you will find the tourist-information-office there . You may get to Melnik by train or take road #9 from Prague. Melnik is also one of the ports of call for cruises on the river Labe / Elbe and Vltava / Moldau (both rivers are also connected by a canal) Leave a Comment

Decin - in the very north of Czechia by globetrott Decin is just a few Km south of the german border and in fact plenty of day-tourists come there by boats from Dresden/ Germany for cheap shoppingtours on the river Elbe ( Labe ). Decin / Tetschen has about 55000 inhabitans now and is in a hight of 135 meters above sea-level. In the 19th century the " Treaty of Decin " / "Vertrag von Tetschen" added some provinces to Austria ( Innviertel, including places like Braunau, Ried im Innkreis...) High above the town of Decin / Tetschen the castle was built on top of a massive rock in 1790 by count Thun-Hohenstein. One of the best attractions of the castle is the rosary, built on a rather narrow, but long rock, decorated with plenty of sandstone-sculptures. There is a small hall at the entrance to the rosary. It is totally empty, but all the walls and the ceiling are covered by great frescos, reminding me a lot of baroque frescos in Italy. In the good old times of the castle it certainly was used as a ballroom. Please click on my picture and take a closer look at this excellent baroque fresco. Unfortunately I have no informations about the painter, as all of my books have almost no infos at all about Decin / Tetschen. The rosary and ballroom may be visited from may till october daily (except monday) from 10.00 a.m. till 05.00 p.m. You may get to Decin by cruiseship on the river Elbe / Labe or by train. You may also take road # 62 / E 442 from Usti nad Labem Leave a Comment

Hrensko - directely at the border to Germany by globetrott Hrensko / Hernskretschen is a small village directely on the border between Czechia and Germany, 10 Km north of the town DECIN and about 20 Km south-east of Dresden / Germany In the surroundigs of Hrensko you will find some really great wonders of nature : Pravcicka Brana / Prebischtor . You will need about 1,5 hours to walk a distance of 4 Km from the parking through the woods in order to get finally to Prebischtor. There you have to pay a small entrance-fee, before you are allowed to take a closer look or enter the restaurant. The best view on Pravcicka Brana / Prebischtor is from a rock opposite of it. You have to climb up lots of steps behind the restaurant in order to get to this great place. This natural arch is 21 meters high and 26 meters wide - the biggest of it's kind in Europe - only in the United States are some larger natural arches to be found. A big part of the importance of Hrensko is the river Labe, where cruiseships will pass by on their way to Hamburg via Dresden, or southwards to places like Decin, Melnik and Prague. Hrensko is also a popular place to fill up gasoline, before tourists are leaving for Germany. You may take a cruiseship or the train to get to Hrensko. The trainstation is on the left bank of the river and a ferry will take you over to the village, beeing on the right bank. You may also take road # 62 from Decin. Leave a Comment

Panska Skala / Herrenhausfelsen by globetrott Panska Skala / Herrenhausfelsen is a volcanic rock-formation similar to the one of Giant Causeway and the island Staffa in Scotland ! Every book uses another expression for this unique wonder of nature. In german guidebooks they still use the german expression, as it was once part of Austria. In local Czech maps you better search for "Panska Skala" or maybe for the small village of "Prachen" ( but it is not always listed on a map) " The Stone Organ of Kamenicky Senov " is another expression somtimes to be found in guidebooks. Inside a very small area around the small vulcanic pond you will find thousands of Basalt- octagons of vulcanic origin. The Basalt was pressed out of the vulcan by such pressure, millions of years ago, that it made that regular octagons that you may see still today. The rock is just about 200 meters from the main road and you may enter it freely and without any restrictions. Somehow it is not yet considdered a major tourist attraction, as they do not even have a good place to park, but simply made the road a bit wider in order to have space for 4-5 cars.. But 1 single tourist-bus parking there will not leave any extra space for other cars You may take the train to Kamenicka Nova Viska or Vesnicka and go with a museum-train maybe 3 more km and have to walk the rest. On road #13 / E 442 Prachen is 4 Km east of Kamenicky Senov & 6 Km west of Novy Bor. Leave a Comment

Ceská Kamenice - 10km east of Decin by globetrott Ceská Kamenice / Böhmisch Kamnitz is one of the places, that are hardly to be found in any guidebook, although it has a great townsquare with even a few wooden houses and a really beautiful monastery. Ceská Kamenice is certainly a great place for a stop-over and a perfect place for a cheap lunch or dinner, although there will be almost no restaurant with an english or german menu. A visit in Ceska Kamenice could be easily combined with Decin ( 10km to the east) and Prachen with Panska Skala ( 3km to the east) You may get to Ceska Kemenice by train or by car, when you take road #13 / E 442 Leave a Comment

Chrudim - 100km east of Prague by globetrott Chrudim is a small town of 26000 inhabitants, about 100Km east of Prague and maybe 6 km south of Pardubice. Chrudim is not yet a place with plenty of tourists, and most of the guide-books I found so far will not mention Chrudim at all. The townsquare of Chrudim still looks the same as 200 years ago with plenty of baroque buildings.Like in most of the other towns in Czech Republic it is always the best to start on the town-square with your sightseeing-tour. The townhall of Chrudim is much older than it seems, as it was " modernized " in 1721 into baroque style, like most of the buildings around the townsquare. On the townsquare you will see the gothic church of the Assumption of the virgin Mary. The church dates back to the 14th century and was partly reconstructed in the 19th century. When you walk to your left from the townhall down the street, you will get to this great museum after about 800 meters. The statue in front is a monument for Josef Ressl, who was born here in Chrudim and invented the modern ship-screw. Josef Ressel ( 1793 - 1857 ) For more infos and pics, please click on my link below ! You may take the train to Chrudim or drive on road # 17 from Kutna Hora or road #37 from Hradec Kralove.
