    Roznov pod Radhostem - 60km
    east of Brno
    by globetrott
Roznov pod Radhostem / Rosenau am Radegast is a small town about 60 km east of Brno .
The major attraction of that town is a large museum of old wooden houses, that were taken down at many places all over Czechia and were rebuilt in Roznov in a way that you get the feeling to be inside an old village.
The museum consists of 3 parts that you may visit seperately or with a combination-ticket.
1)The Mill valley, consisting of different kinds of watermills and you may visit it by guided tours only, that will include demonstrations of the mills working like in the old days.
2)The wooden village is the oldest part of the museum, down in the village and it includes a great church, cemetery, a post-office, grocery, merry-go-round, beehives etc.
3)The Vallachian village up on a hill nearby, including many farmhouses, horses, sheep, geese etc.
Also the town of Roznov is nice for a little walk.

You may take the train in order to get to Roznov pod radhostem or road #35 / E 442

Teplice - in the north of
    Czech Republik
    by globetrott
Teplice / Tepliz is an important town in the north of Czechia, and almost all the trafic to Dresden is going through this town with 53000 inhabitants.
Most tourists simply pass by, but Teplice has also a few nice parks, a great castle, a casino , a few great hotels and art nouveau-facades and an important spa.
My favorite area is at "Zamezke nam" - the castle-square with the castle and castle-church (on the right of my picture).
In a small distance you may see "Erzgebirgstheater" a theatre, and "Urquell" - NOT a beer, But a spa with a well , where the water springs with a temperature of 42 degrees celsius.
Big parts of Teplice are a bit unsafe and it is always best to be careful, where to park your car and where to take a walk. Plenty of ladies offer their services there in the streets day and night. Don't pay attention to them, and they will leave you alone...

You may get to Teplice by train or by car on the main-road from Prague to Dresden. driving-time from Prague is about 2 hours.

    by globetrott
The beautiful castle of Becov nad Teplou / Petschau is the major attraction of this small village in the west of the Czech Republic - about half way between Karlovy Vary / Karlsbad and Marianske Lazne / Marienbad.
The castle is perfectely restored and has a great park around it, where you may take a walk, while you maybe have to wait for the next guided tour.
The treasury inside the castle seemed to be very interesting, as plenty of pics of the exhibits were shown in the ticket-office.

When you walk into that small village with maybe 1000 inhabitants you may see some great buildings, like the ones on my picture.
Becov is still completely out of the area, where most foreign tourists would go and therefore prices are still rather low.
But they obviously have plenty of local day tourists.

You may take the train to Becov nad Teplou or drive on road #20 / E49

Trebic is just about 50 Km west of Brno and you will pass by it on your way to Telc.
Watch out for the great cathedral and the old monastery around it - on my pic you see one of the entrance-gates to the monastery !
In town you may as well see a nice townsquare with a lovely building, covered all over with a sgrafitto-decoration.
These houses are always quite interesting, as many of them tell the history of the villages you pictures in the facades.

You may get to Trebic by train or by car ,using road # 23

  • Valdstejn castle - 25km south of Liberec - Czech Republic
    Valdstejn castle - 25km south
    of Liberec
    by globetrott
Waldstejn castle was the original castle of the Valdstejn-dynasty, also known better by their german name Wallenstein.
    Albrecht Wenzel Eusebius von Wallenstein
    who lived 1583 - 1634
He was the most famous polititian, strategist and general in the Thirty Year' War.

Waldstejn castle was built on top of 3 huge rocks of sandstone that were combined by bridges.
More than 250 meters in length and at the smallest place not much wider than 10 meters.
In the 17th century the castle had been burned down, and was not any more comfortable and safe enough to live there, so the owners had the idea to build a pilgrim church, also in order to show, that their origin was noble and firm in catholic faith.
The church was built by the architects M.A.Canevalli OR by F.M.Kanka ( funny to read this in one of the written infos, I got at the entrance to the castle - so it is still not clear, who finally was the architect...)
Have a look around in the church it really looks nice !
The living-rooms are in the very last part of the castle. This part of the castle was partly adapted and modernized after the castle was sold by the Wallenstein-family to Graf von Aehrenthal in 1822.
You may walk around freely on your own. In some of the rooms you will see guards, also giving a few explanations upon demand and for a small tip.
Do NOT expect them to speak any foreign language, some do, like the ladies at the ticket-box, but the guards normally just might give standard-explanations, but are not able to answer questions.
The 2 big rooms under the terrace are used today by painters for exhibitions.
You may walk down the spiral staircase and have a look around !
There are more infos and pics on my Valstejn-page !

You may get to Valdstejn by train and leave at the stations Pelesany or Karlovice. Then you have to walk another 3-4 km.
You may drive on road #35 / E 442, Valdstejn is close to Hruba Skala (south of Turnov)

    Zelena Hora - 50km north-west
    of Brno / Brünn
    by globetrott
Zelena Hora is one of the most famous examples of the so-called "Baroque Gothic"-style.
A formerly Gothic church was rebuilt and re-decorated in baroque style.
The whole of the church follows certain rules and symbolisms :
most of the rooms and ornaments have 5 edges, only the outside wall of the cemetery has 10 edges.
The church was consecrated to the National saint of the Czech Republic :

    Jan Nepomucky / Johann Nepomuk

He was thrown into the Moldau-river from Charle's bridge in Prague in may 16th, 1393.
The legends says, that he was not willing to tell the king Wenzel IV any secrets, his wife told him during the confession.

Litomysl - 60 km north of Brno
    / Brünn
    by globetrott
Litomysl is the birthplace of Bedrich Smetana and you may still see the house where he was born, next to the lovely castle, that you should not miss, when travelling through Czechia.
Litomysl is in a distance of around 60 km to the north of Brno / Brünn.

Unfortunately photography is forbidden in the castle-interior, but also the park and the innercourt of the castle are really worth a visit !

Do not miss the great town-square of Litomysl - you might take about 3-4 hours to see everything.
"Portmonium" is another quite unique museum, where Josef Vachal painted the house-interior in his very personal style and even made his own furniture around 1920. (In my pic-combination on the left, below)

You may take the train to Litomysl or drive on road # 35 / E 442

Olomouc / Olmütz is mainly known as the origin of a quite stincky cheese ( Olmützer ), BUT it also has a really great town-square with excellent buildings and certainly the biggest plague-column of all over Czechia.
Don't miss the 3 lovely fountains there - my favorite one was the one with the turtles.
There is also a nice russian-orthodox-church, a great cathedral and a lot of buildings of interest.

You might need the whole day in order to explore the most important sights of Olomouc / Olmütz.

You may take the train to Olomouc or drive there by road #R46 / E462

Usti nad Labem - 80km north of
    Prague
    by globetrott
Usti nad Labem / Aussig is an important town with 98000 inhabitants in the north of the Czech Republik. The main train-line betweeen Prague and Dresden will go through Usti nad Labem, beautifully situated at the river Elbe , called Labe in Czechia.
Usti n.L. is the most important port on the river Elbe, just after Hamburg.
The castle on my picture is Strekov / Schreckenstein:
    Strekov castle is open daily
from May till August : 09.00a.m.-05.00p.m.
    in september&October: 09.00a.m.-04.00p.m.

The castle dates back to the 14th century and was used as a toll-station for the merchants transporting their goods on the river Elbe.

You may get to Usti nad Labem by train or by cruise-ship. Roads in that area are a total mess : a highway is under construction and the signs of deviations sometimes keep you sending around in a circle...

Cesky Tesin (on the Czech side) and Cieszyn (on the Polish side) are two cites linked by a common past, where they belonged to the same community. There is the legend of the three brothers that left the city to different directions and returned at the same time; they were so happy to met each other, they called the place Tesin (rejoice). In the place where they met, you can now see the Well of three brothers (Polish side). Now, still separated by river, their inhabitants still share their daily lives.
