 | Czech Republic Off the Beaten Path | Tips 61 - 70 of 167 | | Namest nad Oslavou / Namiest an der Olsawa is a small town 15km east of Brno / Brünn. It is mainly well known for its renaissance-castle , dating back to 1565. That castle is surrounded by terrace-gardens and inside the castle you may see 24 precious gobelins dating back to the 16th till 19th century. When visiting the castle, don't miss the famous library and the armouries-chamber. Down in the village the main attraction is a bridge over the river Oslawa with 20 baroque sculptures, and just opposite of the bridge a lovely storks nest high on top of a chimney. You may take the train in order to get to Namest' nad Oslavou or take road #23 Leave a Comment

Orlik castle dates back to the 13th century and was built on a high rock, that partly disappeared, when a large dam raised the level of the lake by several meters. The castle was bought be the Schwarzenberg-family in 1849 and rebuilt in neo-gothic style. Today it shows a great hunting-saloon, a museum, a library and a chinese saloon. The castle is open to the public daily except monday09.00a.m. - 04.00 p.m. In summer there is also a shuttle-boat to the nearby castle of Zvikov You may drive road #19 to Orlik, BUT the next train-station is in a distance of 5 km in Mirovice Leave a Comment

Pelhrimov / Pilgram is a good excample of an interesting town, not to be found in many guide-books and still interesting in many ways: I found it accidentally, when a deviation forced me to side-roads and I was searching for a place to safely park my motorhome and spend the night. On main square you will see plenty of great buildings dating back to the Renaissance and Baroque. 2 of the medieval towngates are still to be seen and the former castle is a museum now. On the church-clock, shown in the centre of my self-made-postcard, the 2 men will hit the bell each quater of the hour. On mainsquare you will find an excellent and still really cheap bakery ! You may take the train in order to get to Pelhrimov / Pilgram or you drive road # 34 / E 551 Leave a Comment

Ploscovice is quite an interesting castle 65km north-east of Prague and only in a distance of 5km from Litomerice and 10km from Terezin / Theresienstadt. The castle had seen better times already and still needs a lot of restorations outside, but it looks best inside and I may highly recommend to take a tour ! I was the only person on that guided tour and a young lady accompanied me through the rooms and waited, while I was reading the german text on the leaflet she had given me... The museum is open daily except monday April + Oct. Sat.+sun. 09.00a.m. - 04.00p.m. May-Sept. 08.00a.m. - 05.00p.m. On your own and without payment you may see the great park including a water-grotto in the cellar of the castle and the great entrance-hall of the castle. The next trainstation is in Litomerice and the small road going there does not have any number yet on my map... Leave a Comment

Tabor is a lovely medieval town, north of C.Budejovice - on your way to Prague, when coming from Linz/Austria. On my picture you see the great town-square and the townhall, that has a rather unique clock on the tower, showing all 24 hours of the day. Many of the houses show an unique architecture and I think that Tabor is a place, you should dedicate more than just a few hours when visiting. Prices are mostly still rather cheap in that area. You may take the train in order to get to Tabor, or take road #3 / E55 Leave a Comment

Tepla is a famous monastery 10km east of Marianske Lazne / Marienbad and about 50km north-west of Plzen / Pilsen. The monastery lookes quite sad and in bad condition still from outside, BUT has one of the most precious libraries inside. A part of the old monastery is used as a modern hotel with all facilities and an excellent restaurant. This could be a perfect place for a peacful and quiet vacation ! There is a big park around the monastery and a lot of great works of art at some places. You may go to Tepla by train or by car, using road # 210 ! Leave a Comment

Valaske Mezirci / Walachisch - Meseritsch is a nice small town in the east of Czechia, not far from Roznov pod Radhostem. My favorite part was the lovely main square with the townhall, dating back to 1677 and the former pharmacy "U cerveho orla" / red eagle - it is a restaurant today and the best is the facade. The castle of Valaske Mezirci dates back to 1538 and was sold to the Czech state in 1854 by the Kinsky family. The castle became then the only prison for women of the Austrian empire . You may take the train to Valaske Mezirci or raod # 35 / E 442, when coming from Brno and Olomouc. Leave a Comment

Zatec / Saaz is a small town in the north of Czechia, and it is the centre of hop-growing. Zatec has a nice townsquare, a medieval towngate, an old synagoge, that it under restoration at the moment and in the centre of the townsquare you see the townhall, where you may climb up the tower to have a prefect panorama-view. Just a few meters from the townhall you may see "The smallest hop-field in the world" It is just about 120 square-meters ! You may also see it in the centre of my picture-combination. You may get to Zatec / Saaz by train or by road #27 from Most or Plzen / Pilsen Leave a Comment

Znojmo / Znaim is a small town of 39.ooo inhabitants and mainly famous for its wine and for its pickeled cucumbers ( the famous Znaimer Gurkerl ) On the way from Vienna to Prague you will pass by Znaim and it will be worth a visit . On my picture you see the theatre of Znojmo and some excamples of the great architecture, like the town-square, houses with grafitti-facades and a lot more. My favorite was a small greek-othodox-church. 1-2 hours should be enough to explore the city, especially when you are lucky to catch the small sight-seeing-train getting you to all places of interest. Normally this would be just another district museum that you find in provincal towns throughout Europe but the District Museum has something that nothing else has, the largest mechanical nativity scene in the World! The museum itself was founded in 1882 in a former Jesuit seminar building that dates from the renaissance. It is actually a very nice building which adds to the pleasure of the visit. The Kryza is the star attraction here. It consists of hundreds of moving pieces depicting a highly imaginative impression of bibical Bethlehem. The Kryza was built in the 18th century and apparently took 60 years to build. To see the scene in action, you have to wait about one half hour between showings when the custodian starts up the machinary. It is worth the wait. As for the rest of the museum, there is lots of antique furniture which was at one time owned by the opera singer, Mrs. Ema Destinova and rooms full of historical clothing and costumes.
