Tabor - north of C.Budejovice / Budweis

by globetrott

Tabor is a lovely medieval town, north of C.Budejovice - on your way to Prague, when coming from Linz/Austria.On my picture you see the great town-square and the townhall, that has a rather unique clock on the tower, showing all 24 hours of the day. Many of the houses show an unique architecture and I think that Tabor is a place, you should dedicate more than just a few hours when visiting.Prices are mostly still rather cheap in that area. You may take the train in order to get to Tabor, or take road #3 / E55

Trebic - 50km west of Brno / Brünn

by globetrott

Trebic is just about 50 Km west of Brno and you will pass by it on your way to Telc.Watch out for the great cathedral and the old monastery around it - on my pic you see one of the entrance-gates to the monastery !In town you may as well see a nice townsquare with a lovely building, covered all over with a sgrafitto-decoration.These houses are always quite interesting, as many of them tell the history of the villages you pictures in the facades. You may get to Trebic by train or by car ,using road # 23

Jihlava / Iglau - north-west of Brno / Brünn

by globetrott

Jihlava / Iglau is a rather big town , about 60km north-west of Brno / Brünn, and not far from the highway to Prague. One of my grandmothers came from Milicov - close to Jihlava / Iglau. For that reason I came there already once in communiste times, about 1978 in order to search for relatives. We stayed in a hotel in Jihlava and I was really impressed by the great town-square of the 1st city I could explore in Tschechoslovakia. When I returned in summer 2004 I have to admit, it was nice, especially the old tower of the wall, but on the total - and after having seen so many much more beautiful towns in Czechia - I was a bit disappointed...Jihlava / Iglau might be a good place for a stop-over, when you are in the area around Brno or visit Telc, Znojmo etc.You may take the train to Jihlava or take the highway Brno - Prague to get to Jihlava !

Bilna - 80km north of Prague

by globetrott

Bilina is a small town in the north of the Czech Republic and I drove through it on my way from Teplice to Karlovy Vary / Karlsbad. Almost all of the area around Bilina was used for surface-mining of coal and the landscape looks mostly terrible without trees, but some of the old towns remained and were great places for a stop-over.The castle is privately owned today, but on the main-square you may still see lots of beautiful houses and prices are really cheap for shopping and restaurants. In the centre of my picture-combination you may see Boren a mountain of vulcanic origin, 539meters high. You may walk up this mountain and find a restaurant there on top.You may take the train to Bilina or drive on Road Nr. 13 / E442

Bizarre Bone Church

by urbangorilla

A short train ride from Prague is the small place of Kutna Hora. Get off at the main station and walk 15 minute's towards the town's centre to discover the 'bone church'. This church is tiny. Pay a small fee to enter its somewhat morbid interior. Inside it is fully decorated with real human bones, everything from hanging streamers made of skulls to a huge coat of arms that is made up of every bone in the human body (including ear bone). The story I was told is that the surrounding graveyard got crowded...! Not sure on authenticity of that explanation.

Time check please

by iandsmith

It doesn't matter where you walk in Prague, wierd pieces of architecture keep being thrown up in front of you. The key one in this picture is the building on the left which features, as you'll note if you blow the picture up, a sundial on the left hand side. The sun is the greatest clock in the world." Thus spake Voltaire. Gnomonists have heeded his words and so it is that we find the art of horology visible today. For the uninitiated I'm talking about the recording of time on a flat surface. Each gnomon (from the Greek for the word for pointer or indicator) in the northern hemisphere must point towards the North Star and its axis be parallel to the north-south lines of longitude. The dial's face is first traced then frescoed onto whitewashed plaster using natural pigments, such as black from calcinated bone, yellow from ochre, red from ferrous oxide, browns from burnt sienna and green...

Tramp Along Those Unbeaten Paths

by zrim

The Czech countryside is bucolic. It is pretty, but not spectacular. I think the reason to travel there and get one's self out of Prague is to see what small town Europe is like. Many of the smaller villages seem almost stuck in time. There was Hitler, then there was the 45 years of stagnation under communism and now, now we have a sleepy countryside that is just waking up. This is not to imply that the people are backwards. Hardly. But it is not the glossy showcase Europe either. It seems to be real.

Rejoice!

by cabessas

Cesky Tesin (on the Czech side) and Cieszyn (on the Polish side) are two cites linked by a common past, where they belonged to the same community. There is the legend of the three brothers that left the city to different directions and returned at the same time; they were so happy to met each other, they called the place Tesin (rejoice). In the place where they met, you can now see the Well of three brothers (Polish side). Now, still separated by river, their inhabitants still share their daily lives.

The Green Wall

by cabessas

If you want to go for a swim in Prague, give a "jump" to lake Sarka. located in a nice park. They have a green fence all around the lake and I was quite astonished when we were asked to pay for a ticket to be able to swim in a lake!!! There are two zones – normal zone and a nude zone; but to reach the normal zone, you must go through the nude zone. Czech people like to play!Take 26 to the Citibank building, go behind and to the left. about 1km.
