Hradec Kralove / Koeniggraetz - east of Prague

by globetrott

Everybody certainly had to learn about the "Battle of Koeniggraetz" in school, where in july 3rd, 1866 Austria lost an important battle against Prussia..... :-(((Much more important for tourists of today is the great and unique architecture of Hradec Kralove. The town-square of Hradec Kralove / Koeniggraetz is built like a triangle and has 5 towers on its westside:The 2 spires of the cathedral, the White tower and the 2 towers of the old townhall. All of the square is surrounded by baroque buildings, a part of them even with arcades for safe shopping in the rain. The White Tower, just opposite of the cathedral is a good place to have a perfect panorama-view of Hradec Kralove.Climb up the tower, that dates back to 1589 and was originally used as a belltower and watchtower. The bell is the 2nd largest bell in Czechia, beeing about 10 tons. The pope Johannes Paul II visited Hradec Kralove /...

Frydland castle - 30km north of Liberec

by globetrott

Frydland castle dates back to the 13th century and was already open for visitors in the 19th century. It actually is the oldest museum-castle in Europe. You may visit the castle ONLY with a GUIDED tour, at fixed times.Photography INside the castle is forbidden !! :-((Inside the castle-walls you have the feeling to be lost in a labyrinth of gates, corridors and walls. You will have to get through several walls and gates, before you may enter the inner-castle.In some of my books I read, that Franz Kafka thought of this castle, when he wrote his novel "Das Schloss" / "the castle".It is about someone, who gets lost in the labyrinth of courts, gates and walls inside a big castle.Tickets are rare and english- or german-speaking tours are only possible upon prior demand, or maybe when-ever enough tourists ask for a tour.Otherwise it is in Czech language only and costs 200 Kronen. The guide will...

Hruba Skala - 30km south of Liberec

by globetrott

Hruba Skala / Bohemian Paradise is a unique landscape with giant rocks of sandstone set in the most unique way...Bohemian Paradise is a perfect place to go hiking, biking or climbing. There is a tiny gorge between the giant stones, and it is leading up to the castle. At some places it is less than half a meter wide, but concrete-steps had been added for safe climbing up.The castle dates back to gothic times.Hruba Skala castle ( Zamek = castle ) is a hotel today, but it is also open for visitors against a small entrance-fee of 20 Kronen ( 0,7 Euro) and you may climb up the tower in order to have a perfect panorama-view.The closest trainstation is Karlovice ( in a distance of 5km) or you may take road #35 / E 442 from Liberec -Turnov and finally search for the small side-road after you have passed Karlovice.

Jablonne v Podjestedi > castle Lemberk

by globetrott

Lemberk castle / Schloß Löwenberg is about 20 km east of Novy Bor and dates back to 1240 and was built in order to watch over the trading-paths to Zittau. In the 17th century the castle was partly rebuilt and "modernized" into baroque style, like it still looks today. You have to enter the castle by several gates leading from one court to the next one, before you will finally get into the centre-court and may see the great architecture there. All of the ground is covered by great and romantic cobbled stones. The castle shows great interiors of the time between the gothic , the baroque untill the 19th century.Visits of the castle-interior is only possible by a guided tour and the entrance-fee is just 50 Kronen ( less than 2 Euros )NO Video & NO Photos INside the castle, during the tour !!You may take the train to Jablonne v Pojestedi or road # 13 / E 442 from Decin - Novy Bor...

Prachen and Panska Skala / Herrenhausfelsen

by globetrott

Panska Skala / Herrenhausfelsen is a volcanic rock-formation similar to the one of Giant Causeway and the island Staffa in Scotland !Every book uses another expression for this unique wonder of nature. In german guidebooks they still use the german expression, as it was once part of Austria. In local Czech maps you better search for "Panska Skala" or maybe for the small village of "Prachen" ( but it is not always listed on a map)" The Stone Organ of Kamenicky Senov " is another expression somtimes to be found in guidebooks.Inside a very small area around the small vulcanic pond you will find thousands of Basalt- octagons of vulcanic origin. The Basalt was pressed out of the vulcan by such pressure, millions of years ago, that it made that regular octagons that you may see still today. The rock is just about 200 meters from the main road and you may enter it freely and without any...

Valdstejn castle - 25km south of Liberec

by globetrott

Waldstejn castle was the original castle of the Valdstejn-dynasty, also known better by their german name Wallenstein.Albrecht Wenzel Eusebius von Wallensteinwho lived 1583 - 1634He was the most famous polititian, strategist and general in the Thirty Year' War.Waldstejn castle was built on top of 3 huge rocks of sandstone that were combined by bridges.More than 250 meters in length and at the smallest place not much wider than 10 meters. In the 17th century the castle had been burned down, and was not any more comfortable and safe enough to live there, so the owners had the idea to build a pilgrim church, also in order to show, that their origin was noble and firm in catholic faith. The church was built by the architects M.A.Canevalli OR by F.M.Kanka ( funny to read this in one of the written infos, I got at the entrance to the castle - so it is still not clear, who finally was the...

Chrudim - 100km east of Prague

by globetrott

Chrudim is a small town of 26000 inhabitants, about 100Km east of Prague and maybe 6 km south of Pardubice.Chrudim is not yet a place with plenty of tourists, and most of the guide-books I found so far will not mention Chrudim at all.The townsquare of Chrudim still looks the same as 200 years ago with plenty of baroque buildings.Like in most of the other towns in Czech Republic it is always the best to start on the town-square with your sightseeing-tour.The townhall of Chrudim is much older than it seems, as it was " modernized " in 1721 into baroque style, like most of the buildings around the townsquare. On the townsquare you will see the gothic church of the Assumption of the virgin Mary. The church dates back to the 14th century and was partly reconstructed in the 19th century. When you walk to your left from the townhall down the street, you will get to this great museum after about...

Pardubice - 100km east of Prague

by globetrott

Pardubice / Pardubitz is a town of 93000 inhabitants , built by the Pernstein-family in the 16th century at the confluence of the rivers Labe / Elbe and Chrudimka - about halfway between Hradec Kralove and Chrudim. They built a great renaissance town with plenty of similarities to the architecture of Italy.Great and unique facades are found all over the old part of town, but especially on the town-square, called Pernstynovo namest.Take a closer look for the great baroque stucco-ornaments and the big variety of facades. The townhall of Pardubice / Pardubitz was built from 1892 - 1894 and decorated with sgraffiti by Mikolas Ales. The townhall was recently restored, like most other buildings on the townsquare and looks really great today !Dom U Jonase - on the townsquare opposite of the Green Gate is another great excample of a unique facade - see more pics on my link below !When walking...

Melnik - 30km north of Prague

by globetrott

The town of Melnik was built on top of a small mountain with strategic importance, as you could over-see the whole valley and the rivers Moldau / Vltava and Elbe / Labe that join right under that mountain. The castle dates back to the 9th century, was rebuilt several times and the way it looks today it was rebuilt in the 16th century with graffities of 1553.You may visit 10 rooms inside the castle, showing the Lobkowitz-Galery, a small museum about wine-culture and even a museum of the " history of Kinderwagen " ( Baby carriages )When you see the castle from a big distance, you will get the impression the tower belongs to the castle, BUT in fact it is the church-tower and the castle's tower is much smaller. The church dates back to the 15th century, and you may walk up the tower in order to have a great panorama-view.There is a promenade around the castle that will give you a great...

Chomutov / Komotau is a small town, situated in the north-west of Prague, directely on street Nr. 27 / E442 from Karlovy Vary to Teplice.Have a short stop-over and take a look at the lovely town-square !Chomutov has almost NO tourists yet, and prices are still very low !!When you drive through the landsape around Chomutov / Komotau - with a lot of a landscape looking like in the desert, because of surface-mining - you will be surprised to see such a lovely small village there, with arcades around the town-square.Almost all buildings on the main-square of Chomutov / Komotau will have such great arcades, where you may sit in the open air in a restaurant garden, and still be protected against the rain.Chomutov / Komotau dates back to the year 1252 and was founded as a posession of the "German Order / Deutscher Orden" The german Order was founded in order to support the crusades, build...
