Decin - in the very north of Czechia

by globetrott

Decin is just a few Km south of the german border and in fact plenty of day-tourists come there by boats from Dresden/ Germany for cheap shoppingtours on the river Elbe ( Labe ).Decin / Tetschen has about 55000 inhabitans now and is in a hight of 135 meters above sea-level.In the 19th century the " Treaty of Decin " / "Vertrag von Tetschen" added some provinces to Austria ( Innviertel, including places like Braunau, Ried im Innkreis...)High above the town of Decin / Tetschen the castle was built on top of a massive rock in 1790 by count Thun-Hohenstein.One of the best attractions of the castle is the rosary, built on a rather narrow, but long rock, decorated with plenty of sandstone-sculptures.There is a small hall at the entrance to the rosary. It is totally empty, but all the walls and the ceiling are covered by great frescos, reminding me a lot of baroque frescos in Italy. In the good...

Hrensko - directely at the border to Germany

by globetrott

Hrensko / Hernskretschen is a small village directely on the border between Czechia and Germany, 10 Km north of the town DECIN and about 20 Km south-east of Dresden / GermanyIn the surroundigs of Hrensko you will find some really great wonders of nature : Pravcicka Brana / Prebischtor .You will need about 1,5 hours to walk a distance of 4 Km from the parking through the woods in order to get finally to Prebischtor. There you have to pay a small entrance-fee, before you are allowed to take a closer look or enter the restaurant. The best view on Pravcicka Brana / Prebischtor is from a rock opposite of it.You have to climb up lots of steps behind the restaurant in order to get to this great place. This natural arch is 21 meters high and 26 meters wide - the biggest of it's kind in Europe - only in the United States are some larger natural arches to be found.A big part of the importance of...

Kadan - 65km north-west of Prague

by globetrott

Kadan is a beautiful, small town, between Karlovy Vary and Teplice.Somehow this lovely town does not seem to belong to the landscape around it, that mostly looks like on the moon because of surface mining at most places. The townsquare of Kadan / Kaaden is beautifully surrounded by gothic, renaissance and baroque houses, most of them were recently restored and look simply great. There once was a double townwall with several gates. This townwall may be seen still at many places. In 1259 Kadan became " royal town " and in 1367 and 1374 Emperor Charles IV spent several weeks in Kadan ......For that reason there is an annual festivity, an " Emperor festivty / Kaiserfest You may get to Kadan by train or take road # 13 / E 442 from Teplice to Karlovy Vary / Karlsbad.

Loket - close to Karlovy Vary / Karlsbad

by globetrott

Loket / Elbogen will make a great and interesting place for a short stop-over or even a longer vacation !The castle of Loket was built at a great stategical point on top of a rock, surrounded by about 90% by the deep valley of the river Ohre / Eger and in the old times there was only 1 small natural bridge to the town." Heute waren wir in Elbogen das über alle Beschreibung schön liegt und sich als ein Kunstwerk von allen Seiten betrachten lässt. "Today we have been in Loket, that is built in the most beautiful way and may be viewed from all sides...This is what Goethe has written in his diary on july 1st, 1807.Goethe came to Loket about 12 times - it was a distance of about 150 km south of his home in Weimar. Today it will take 4 hours maybe, in the old times it certainly was more than 1 day to travel by horse&carriage. You will still find some traces of Goethe in Loket:Hotel " Bily kun "...

Velehrad

by magor65

Velehrad is one of the most important places of pilgrimage in Moravia. It is strictly connected with the tradition of Ss Cyril and Methodius - the Slavonic apostles and patrons of Europe. It was in Velehrad that the first Cistercian convent in Moravia was founded in the 13th century. The present appearance of the convent dates from the 18th century, when it was reconstructed in the Baroque style, preserving though some Romanesque and Gothic elements. One of the most interesting elements of the interior is the marble altar - work of the famous Baldassare Fontana. After looking around for a couple of minutes, we set off to find the painting of Ss Cyril and Methodius by a Polish painter Jan Matejko. We find it easily in one of the side chapels. However, we fail to find other Polish elements in the church: the banner with Our Lady from Czestochowa and the picture of Ss Cyril and Methodius by...

Punkva cave

by magor65

Punkva cave lies in the Moravian Karst region (near the city of Blansko). Out of the big number of caves here four are open to the public but Punkva cave is probably the most spectacular and famous. So it is better to book the tickets well in advance, otherwise you may be disappointed when no tickets are available on the day of your visit. Ususally it's the hotels or guesthouses that offer to reserve the tickets when you arrange accommodation. The visit to the Punkva cave is a great experience. First you walk through underground corridors decorated with stalactites and stalagmites, which although beautiful, don't leave you speechless if you visited any major caves before. The best part starts when you get to the Macocha Propast (Stepmother abyss). This 135 metre deep abyss was formed when a cave's ceiling collapsed. You feel overwhelmed with its hugeness, especially when you see the...

Kratochvile castle

by magor65

The castle of Kratochvile ( 40 km west of Budejovice) was built during the reign of the last Lords of the Rozmberk at the end of the 16th century. The name Kratochvile can be translated as 'fun' or 'pastime'. Looking at the place the name seems to be right. The main building surrounded by a moat and colourful flowerbeds, on the other side of the moat a herb garden and neat paths, the whole surrounded by white buildings with beautiful frescos on the walls -it all makes an idyllic impression. The one-storey villa built in the Italian Renaissance style houses an exhibition of puppets and cartoons. We only peeped inside and afterwards I regretted we didn't get in, especially when I read how valuable and unique the interiors are.

Ohrada castle and Municky lake

by magor65

Just two km from Hluboka there is still another castle, which of course also belonged to the Schwarzenberg family. It's the hunting castle Ohrada. Today it's the museum of woodcraft and hunting. Inside visitors can see different hunting trophies and unusual furniture made of fur and antlers. We didn't get inside, as the day was very hot and we were a bit tired of visiting castles interiors. We preferred to spend some time on the lake. Although the Czech Republic is a landlocked country, the number of lakes makes up for it. While travelling by car we caught a glimpse of lakes again and again, so now we rewarded ourselves with a boat ride on Municky lake near the Ohrada castle. It cost only 1,50 Euro to hire a boat for four and we spent a relaxing hour on water. The view of the Hluboka castle from the lake was stunning, we could also see some big fish jumping funnily out of water and some...

Ceske Budejovice

by magor65

There are several reasons why Ceske Budejovice are well known. The main reason is probably its local beer: Budweiser. Another reason is the biggest market square in the Czech Republic and also its beautiful Renaissance and Baroque buildings. We started visiting the town from the market square (surprisingly we had no problem to find a parking place for our car - something incredible in our home-town). The blue Baroque townhall looks great. So do the houses around - in many colours with various ornamentations and arcades. It took us some time to find the stone with a cross set among the paving near the fountain. This stone of irregular shape marks the place where in Middle Ages were the gallows. From the market square we walk to the Black Tower which is 72 metres high. From its top visitors have a great view over Ceske Budejovice and surroundings. One of the most popular places in town is...

Hluboka castle (2)

by magor65

Visiting the castle of Hluboka and Cesky Krumlov you are bound to come across the coat-of-arms of the Schwarzenberg family. Its one field is especially interesting - it shows the head of a Turk and a raven pecking out his eye. What does it have to do with a noble family? It is to commemorate the conquest of Raab (the Turkish fortress) in which Adolf Schwarzenberg took part. When you enter the courtyards of Hluboka castle stop by the gate - you will see that its handle has the shape of a Turk's head and a raven - most unusual! As in most Czech castles you are not allowed to take photos of the interiors. What a pity - the castle of Hluboka hides a lot of 'gems'. Of course not all 140 rooms can be visited, but the ones that can are very interesting., like a golden room with valuable tapestries or a library with Baroque bookcases and a coffer ceiling. The collections of glass and weapons are...
