Hluboka castle

by magor65

The chateau of Hluboka near Ceske Budejovice was originally founded as a guarding castle in the mid 13th century. In the course of history it belonged to several noble families, but the Schwarzenbergs owned it for the longest time (from the 17th century up to 1939).The castle as we see it today is the result of the thorough reconstruction in the second part of the 19th century. Prince Adolf II and his wife Eleonore had the castle rebuilt in the style of Tudor Gothic. The model was the royal castle of Windsor. The Hluboka castle with its eleven towers and two courtyards is an impressive building. It's surrounded by the English style castle park. Even if you don't decide to see its interiors, you should spare at least an hour to spend here. Walk around the castle and look for the best photo opportunities. It looks photogenic from each side but I loved the open work construction made of wood...

Kutna Hora - Sedlec - ossuary

by magor65

Telling the truth, I didn't feel like visiting the ossuary in Sedlec. Visiting the chapel of skulls in Poland has always filled me with the strange sensation as if I was trespassing on the forbidden grounds. But after my husband and sister-in-law came out of the Sedlec ossuary they were so impressed that they talked me into visiting it. They were right - the place is weird and spooky - but also fascinating and unique.A bit of history ... In 1278 Abbot Henry set off on a pilgrimage to the Holy land from which he returned with some 'holy soil'. He spread it over the Sedlec cemetery and from that moment the place began to be considered as a piece of 'sacred land'. The burial ground became widely known not only in the country but also outside its boundaries,. The number of bodies to be buried there grew dramatically in the times of the plague and wars. In 1870 Frantisek Rint, a local...

Streudel Worth Going Out of Your Way For

by DueSer

There is a tiny place to go for the absolute best streudel in the entire world! It is called Susta Strudl and the address is Jesenoiva 29 on the border of the Vinohrady and Zizkov sections of Prague. They offer several different kinds of streudel, altho the apple I heartily recommend. Each streudel is the length of a person's forearm and weighs a lot. The apple is just stuffed with 2 different kinds of apples as well as a generous amount of cinnamon. The dough is light and flaky and delicious. It is topped with powdered sugar. And the best part - it's only about $1.25 US for one of these streudels. What a bargain! To get there, take the subway's green line to the Flora station. When you exit, take Jicinska as it goes along the edge of a large cemetery. When you cross over Olsanska, stay on Jicinska altho it becomes Prokopova. It will curve to the left. When you hit Lipanska, turn right....

CZ is more than just Prague!

by swetluska

However Prague belongs to the most beautiful towns in the world and however really IS the first you should see in CZ, there is definitelly more what CZ can offer. Many tourists have already discovered the beauty of Karlstejn, Cesky Krumlov, Karlovy Vary or Bonechurch in Seldec , but also the rest of the country is amazing and worth seeing. The north-east with Beskydy mountains, Pustevny and Roznov pod Radhostem, and also Ostrava, one of the biggest towns in CZ with famous Stodolni street and with the Mining museum - visiting the underground colliery is without any doubt great experience. Our country is small and it takes just few hours to go from one side to the other - so visit little more than only our capital!

The Church of St John of Nepomuk in Kutna Hora

by Paul2001

The Church of St John of Nepomuk is the only baroque church in Kutna Hora. It was built in 1734 to 1752. The church was built in honour of the cannonization of St John of Nepomuk who is the patron saint of Bohemia. It is by no means an exceptional example of baroque but I visited it as I was strolling through the town. As you walking through the town, the church captures you attention because of the brightly painted pink facade. The interior is a bit dark for a baroque church but like so many others, it is very elaborately decorated.

Chesky Crumolov

by N_Bomb

Ok this was the darling of the backpackers scene about 3 years ago so it's probably just starting to get into mainstream consciousness but I would say that the BEST activity possible here was the river rafting.Just floating down the river that bisects the town downstream for 3 hours was incredible the scenery and the little villages I saw were absolutely breath taking.Hop in when you stop by there don't panic when they just hand you the paddles and explore to your hearts content

Cesky Raj

by mbsimjam

Cesky Raj is a protected park area in northern Bohemia full of amazing rock formations. It is one of the best hiking areas in the country with beautiful forested areas, rocky hills and valleys, and beautiful veiwpoints from the top. To get there, you will most likely have to take a bus if you don't rent a car. For all info on how to get there, stay there, enjoy yourself, check out the website below.

The Olomouc Town Hall and Astronomical Clock

by Paul2001

Once you have reached the Stare Mesto in Olomouc you should start out with a visit to the Town Hall. This is where the tourist office is located and more importantly, the famed astronomical clock. The building itself was constructed in 1378 and is dominated by it's towering clock tower. Overall it is a lovely town hall but nothing special after you have seen so many in the Czech Republic. What makes the town hall so unusual is the astronomical clock. This was probably at one time quite stunning but it was ruined thanks to the Communists, when the saints that had graced the face of the clock were replaced by proletarian representives. It now looks almost comical.
