Those of you who are...

by Dudytka

Those of you who are interested in our nature treasure, don't miss MORAVSKY KRAS (Moravian Karst)! It's a beautiful piece of land. It's an karstic area. There is the deepest abyss 'Macocha' [138,6m deep and also 50m deep lake on the bottom], known all around the world. Another not-miss-it is Punkva river. Punkva is interesting because for three times she disapears under the ground. Punkva views the daylight for the first time on the floor of the Macocha Abyss in the shape of the Dolni jezero (Lower lake). Then she hides again in the Punkevni Cave and at the end rises again on the ground. But after couple of tens meters disappears under the ground again. When she shows up, she definitely stays above the ground and ends up in the Svitava River. You can go for a ride on it and see incredibly beautiful stalactites that for centuries dropping watter rich on calcium created.

Discover World Heritage Telc

by urbangorilla

Although it depends on where you are coming from the tiny town of Telc in south-central Czech isn't really off the beaten path. I reached it by bus from Brno after getting off the train from Budapest. It's a good mid-way stopping point on your way to nice, but touristic, Czesky Krumlov. The entire town of Telc is World Heritage Listed and its easy to see why. According to some it is the best preserved medieval village in entire Europe. The place is tiny, but the town centre is spectacular, with multi-coloured facades on a huge main square, and a great clock tower. Further, the whole town is surrounded by a lake. I must admit when I was there it was crystal clear blue skies, everything was blanketted in snow, the lake was frozen and white, and I was the only tourist - didn't even seem to be locals around?! Nonetheless, I think this place would be great any time of year.People may approach...

The South Bohemia Motorcycle Museum

by Paul2001

The South Bohemia Motorcycle Museum is located in Ceske Budejovice in what was once the town armoury. It was built in 1531 and survived the fire in 1641 that destroyed so much of the rest of the town. Naturally this is the sort of museum that might attract only enthusiasts but the entry cost is but 40kc which meant that I could afford to be mildly curious. The museum is small but interesting. There are many motorbikes including quite a few from World War Two. I have some friends who are motorbike enthusiasts so this is one museum I think that they would enjoy if they come to South Bohemia.

The Stone Fountain in Kunta Hora

by Paul2001

Yes this is fountain. I did not think that it looked like one but it is. The fountain is considered to be a fine example of 15th century architecture. It is located by the Church of St. John of Nepomuk which you can see in the background. It is an interesting piece of architecture and if you have plenty of time in Kunta Hora, then check it out.

The District Museum in Jindrichuv Hradec

by Paul2001

Normally this would be just another district museum that you find in provincal towns throughout Europe but the District Museum has something that nothing else has, the largest mechanical nativity scene in the World! The museum itself was founded in 1882 in a former Jesuit seminar building that dates from the renaissance. It is actually a very nice building which adds to the pleasure of the visit. The Kryza is the star attraction here. It consists of hundreds of moving pieces depicting a highly imaginative impression of bibical Bethlehem. The Kryza was built in the 18th century and apparently took 60 years to build. To see the scene in action, you have to wait about one half hour between showings when the custodian starts up the machinary. It is worth the wait. As for the rest of the museum, there is lots of antique furniture which was at one time owned by the opera singer, Mrs. Ema...

The Town Hall in Ceske Budejovice

by Paul2001

The Town Hall is the most beautiful building in Ceske Budejovice. It was built in 1555 but was redesigned in 1731 and given a baroque facade. It features frescos of representing Justice, Wisdom, Courage and Prudence. Sadly the interior of the building largely closed off to the public except for the tourist information office.

Gloomy Prague

by tauroctonia

I was just walking through some narrow side streets and discovered this strange sculpture... don't remember where it was, though. And thinking about interesting statues, sculptures and other art: I'm remembering also to have come across a funny sculpture of a hat wearing man hanging on a pole between two roofs. And the Franz Kafka statue in the heart of the Jewish quarter is also worth seeing! It's fascinating to explore those unique features of Prague!

The smallest city in Central Europe

by Lamanai

You may see the tiniest town in the central Europe. Rabstejn nad Strelou was entitled as a city by John of Luxembourg (father of Charles IV) in 1337. Slate-boards exploited in the surroundings were used for rooves of castles and houses. Nowadays, it has got about 27 inhabitants.Pure river, beautiful landscape, historical sights (an old stone bridge, a church, a Jewish cemetery, mansion, an old castle, ruined town gates, cute architecture) - really a lot to see.
