Go canoeing on a river. I recommend Vltava river but other ones are worth to see as well. The tour takes about 4-6 days. You can hire a canoe, the prices are not that high. It is a mellow experience: having fun, beer, talking and not hurrying.

Slivovitz.... Czech fire water.

by mark88

Made from distilled Plums and it's seems stronger than Vodka and packs quite a punch. That explains the merry faces in the photo. I'm on the left and my host, Tomaz is on the right. He really likes his Slivovitz and Radegast the local pivo (beer).

Roznov in Wallachia has a very good historical village that depicts life as it was hundreds of years ago. Their summer folk festivals are outdoors. Traditional food and beverages such as klobasas (sausage), bramborky (potatoe fritter) and medovina (honey wine) abound. I'm still hooked on the stringy sheeps cheese.

Usti nad Labem - 80km north of Prague

by globetrott

Usti nad Labem / Aussig is an important town with 98000 inhabitants in the north of the Czech Republik. The main train-line betweeen Prague and Dresden will go through Usti nad Labem, beautifully situated at the river Elbe , called Labe in Czechia.Usti n.L. is the most important port on the river Elbe, just after Hamburg. The castle on my picture is Strekov / Schreckenstein:Strekov castle is open dailyfrom May till August : 09.00a.m.-05.00p.m.in september&October: 09.00a.m.-04.00p.m.The castle dates back to the 14th century and was used as a toll-station for the merchants transporting their goods on the river Elbe. You may get to Usti nad Labem by train or by cruise-ship. Roads in that area are a total mess : a highway is under construction and the signs of deviations sometimes keep you sending around in a circle...

PRIBOR - 50km east of Olomouc

by globetrott

Pribor / Freiberg is a small town, about 50 km east of Olomouc. It has a nice townsquare, like you may see them at many places in Czechia, and it would not make sense to make a stopover there, except for lunch or dinner........but mainly Pribor / Freiberg is well known as the birthplace of Siegmund Freud, who was born there in may 6th, 1856 in Zamecnicka 117. Freud lived there only until he was 4, then his parents left for Vienna ( where you may still see his appartment and ordination in a museum in Berggasse 19, close to Votivkirche)Freud came back to Pribor once in 1872 for a small vacation. You may take the train to Pribor or drive on road # 48 / E 462.Pribor is also the place, where you will leave the aminroad from Olomouc to Ostrava, when you intend to go the Pustevne, Koprivnice or Roznov pod Radhostem.

Valaske Mezirci - east of Olomouc

by globetrott

Valaske Mezirci / Walachisch - Meseritsch is a nice small town in the east of Czechia, not far from Roznov pod Radhostem. My favorite part was the lovely main square with the townhall, dating back to 1677 and the former pharmacy "U cerveho orla" / red eagle - it is a restaurant today and the best is the facade. The castle of Valaske Mezirci dates back to 1538 and was sold to the Czech state in 1854 by the Kinsky family. The castle became then the only prison for women of the Austrian empire . You may take the train to Valaske Mezirci or raod # 35 / E 442, when coming from Brno and Olomouc.

Zatec / Saaz - 60km north-west of Prague

by globetrott

Zatec / Saaz is a small town in the north of Czechia, and it is the centre of hop-growing.Zatec has a nice townsquare, a medieval towngate, an old synagoge, that it under restoration at the moment and in the centre of the townsquare you see the townhall, where you may climb up the tower to have a prefect panorama-view.Just a few meters from the townhall you may see"The smallest hop-field in the world"It is just about 120 square-meters !You may also see it in the centre of my picture-combination.You may get to Zatec / Saaz by train or by road #27 from Most or Plzen / Pilsen

Jezeri Zamek - west of Teplice

by globetrott

Jezeri Zamek may be seen already from a big distance and I found that name accidentally on a map and so I started to search for the roads to get there. It took me quite a long time and the rest of the road was through dense woods and lousy roads......simply in order to find out, that the castle is privately owned and not open to the public, and it looks best from a big distance.Plenty of watch-dogs make sure you stay outside of the fence and there is not even a place, where you may take a nice picture of that castle...The next trainstation is Litvinov and from there you have to walk about 6 km, BUT I guess, it is not worth the trouble...

Trosky castle ruins - in Bohemian Paradise

by globetrott

"Trosky" is the Czech name for ruin, and the Trosky castle ruins may be seen from almost any place in the area of the so-called Boheman Paradise. In the 14th century the castle was built on 2 high rocks, about 10 Km south/east of Turnov.Alexander von Humboldt an J.W.von Goethe were fascinated by the beauty of this great landmark.Trosky castle is open April+Oct. 09.00a.m. - 04.00 p.m.May-Sep. 08.00a.m. - 05.00 p.m.Borek is the closest trainstation to Trosky castle ( about 5km distance) or you drive the road #35 / E 442 from Liberec- Turnov - and then you search for the signs after the small village Ktova.

Rakovnik - 50 km west of Prague

by globetrott

Rakovnik is a small town, 50 km west of Prague / Prag, and I found it, when driving through the countryside. The main attraction in my opinion was the old towngate, shown on my picture-combination.The townsquare has also a few interesting buildings, but nothing very special. The best part of a place like this is the fact, that you are able to go for lunch and dinner at really incredible prices and also supermarkets and shops are a lot cheaper than in the big cities. In order to get to Rakovnik, you may take the train or road # 237
