Pelhrimov - 80km west of Brno

by globetrott

Pelhrimov / Pilgram is a good excample of an interesting town, not to be found in many guide-books and still interesting in many ways:I found it accidentally, when a deviation forced me to side-roads and I was searching for a place to safely park my motorhome and spend the night. On main square you will see plenty of great buildings dating back to the Renaissance and Baroque.2 of the medieval towngates are still to be seen and the former castle is a museum now.On the church-clock, shown in the centre of my self-made-postcard, the 2 men will hit the bell each quater of the hour.On mainsquare you will find an excellent and still really cheap bakery !You may take the train in order to get to Pelhrimov / Pilgram or you drive road # 34 / E 551

Namest' nad Oslavou - 15km east of Brno

by globetrott

Namest nad Oslavou / Namiest an der Olsawa is a small town 15km east of Brno / Brünn.It is mainly well known for its renaissance-castle , dating back to 1565.That castle is surrounded by terrace-gardens and inside the castle you may see 24 precious gobelins dating back to the 16th till 19th century. When visiting the castle, don't miss the famous library and the armouries-chamber.Down in the village the main attraction is a bridge over the river Oslawa with 20 baroque sculptures, and just opposite of the bridge a lovely storks nest high on top of a chimney. You may take the train in order to get to Namest' nad Oslavou or take road #23

Ceská Kamenice - 10km east of Decin

by globetrott

Ceská Kamenice / Böhmisch Kamnitz is one of the places, that are hardly to be found in any guidebook, although it has a great townsquare with even a few wooden houses and a really beautiful monastery.Ceská Kamenice is certainly a great place for a stop-over and a perfect place for a cheap lunch or dinner, although there will be almost no restaurant with an english or german menu.A visit in Ceska Kamenice could be easily combined with Decin ( 10km to the east) and Prachen with Panska Skala ( 3km to the east)You may get to Ceska Kemenice by train or by car, when you take road #13 / E 442

Ploscovice - 65km north-east of Prague

by globetrott

Ploscovice is quite an interesting castle 65km north-east of Prague and only in a distance of 5km from Litomerice and 10km from Terezin / Theresienstadt. The castle had seen better times already and still needs a lot of restorations outside, but it looks best inside and I may highly recommend to take a tour !I was the only person on that guided tour and a young lady accompanied me through the rooms and waited, while I was reading the german text on the leaflet she had given me...The museum is open daily except mondayApril + Oct. Sat.+sun. 09.00a.m. - 04.00p.m.May-Sept. 08.00a.m. - 05.00p.m. On your own and without payment you may see the great park including a water-grotto in the cellar of the castle and the great entrance-hall of the castle. The next trainstation is in Litomerice and the small road going there does not have any number yet on my map...

Novy Jicin - east of Brno / Brünn

by globetrott

Novy Jicin / Neutitschein might be another interesting town for a stopover in the east of Czechia, on your way to Ostrava. The town has about 27000 inhabitants, a lovely town-square and a lot of great buildings all over town. One of the sidestreets, Msgr. Sramka, rather close to the big parking, is full of great Art Nouveau-buildings, like you may see them on the upper-part of my picture-combination.You might need about half a day in order to explore all sight of this town and prices are still really low, as tourists mostly pass by without having an idea, what they are missing...You may get to Novy Jicin by train or by car, using road #48 / E462

Olomouc / Olmütz - east of Brno / Brünn

by globetrott

Olomouc / Olmütz is mainly known as the origin of a quite stincky cheese ( Olmützer ), BUT it also has a really great town-square with excellent buildings and certainly the biggest plague-column of all over Czechia.Don't miss the 3 lovely fountains there - my favorite one was the one with the turtles. There is also a nice russian-orthodox-church, a great cathedral and a lot of buildings of interest. You might need the whole day in order to explore the most important sights of Olomouc / Olmütz.You may take the train to Olomouc or drive there by road #R46 / E462

Litomysl - 60 km north of Brno / Brünn

by globetrott

Litomysl is the birthplace of Bedrich Smetana and you may still see the house where he was born, next to the lovely castle, that you should not miss, when travelling through Czechia.Litomysl is in a distance of around 60 km to the north of Brno / Brünn.Unfortunately photography is forbidden in the castle-interior, but also the park and the innercourt of the castle are really worth a visit !Do not miss the great town-square of Litomysl - you might take about 3-4 hours to see everything."Portmonium" is another quite unique museum, where Josef Vachal painted the house-interior in his very personal style and even made his own furniture around 1920. (In my pic-combination on the left, below)You may take the train to Litomysl or drive on road # 35 / E 442

Kromeriz - 50 km east of Brno

Kromeriz is another interesting place, when you start to explore the east of Czechia. There is a big castle with an excellent interior, BUT unfortunately Photography is forbidden inside, and only guided tours are available !Around the castle is a great park with a baroque maze and even a small zoo .Don't miss the big townsquare with plenty of great baroque buildings and churches. You might need half a day in order to explore the most important sights of Kromeritz. You may go to Kromeritz by train or take road #47

Mikulov / Nikolsburg - south of Brno / Brünn

by globetrott

Mikulov / Nikolsburg is the first town after the border between Austria and Czechia, when driving from Vienna to Brno / Brünn.There is a great castle - shown on my picture , a big thomb that looks rather like a church and a lovely house with graffitis on main square and finally a jewish cemetery.A visit to Mikulov may easyly be combined with a visit of Lednice , Valtice and Znojmo. You ma take the train to Mikulov or drive on road #52 / E 461
