    Where Gustav Mahler Stayed

The house where Gustav Mahler lived is located just round the corner from the main square on the corner if Ztracena and Michalska streets. The plain memorial plaque is easily overlooked. Mahler moved in when he got an engangement at the theatre in Olomouc in 1883.

The town is proud to have had this famous composer among its inhabitants. They conveniently forget to mention, though, that Mahler hated his job at the theatre so much that he left already after a few weeks...

I spotted this cute stucco relief on a house in the western part of ul. 8. kvetna. The building hosts a b&b, Pension U Jakuba. It is an art nouveau house, the whole facade covered in ornaments. The little boy appears sitting on a row of pinnacles between the windows of the first floor.

    Vyskov: airplanes & Helicopters galore

by globetrott Updated Sep 30, 2012

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

In case that you are interested in old aircrafts of the former east-bloc, this might be a place for you, and it is about halfway between Brno and Olomouc: Vyskov !
There are plenty of helicopters on display there also.
They seem to be still in good shape and I cannot understand that any army would sell them or even give them away.
But it could be of course that importants spare-parts had been taken out of them already, and they just look good from outside, but are not able anymore to fly.

    The TATRA-museum in Koprivnice

When you are interested in great vintage-cars, this is a must for you: 60km from Olomouc you will find a really great museum of Tatra-automobiles, planes and even a Tatra-train.
My favorite part of the museum was the section with the huge 4x4 trucks and expedition-vehicles, beeing able to explore even the remotest places on earth. In the centre of my picture-combination you will see one of them - only 2 of that type were built for an expedition by Czech scientists across Asia in the late 50s.

Roznov pod Radhostem - 70km from Olomouc

Roznov pod Radhostem - 70km from Olomouc

Roznov pod Radhostem / Rosenau am Radegast is a small town in a distance of about 70km south-east of Olomouc.
In Roznov pod Radhostem you will see the big open-air-museum of wooden houses and watermills, called "Valasske muzeum v prirode".
It will take about 3-5 hours to see it all, as the watermills may be visited by a guided tour only (including demonstrations of the mills ) and the rest of the buildings are spread over a rather big area, arranged like in the original villages with meadows, sheep, cows etc.
A lot of walking is needed there uphill and downhill, but all the buildings still have their original interior and you have to feeling, it always belonged there, although 90% of them were de-constructed all over Czechia and finally rebuilt again in the museum.

    Novy Jicin / Neutitschein

Novy Jicin / Neutitschein might be another interesting town for a stopover, when exploring the area east of Olomouc !.
The town of Novy Jicin with the funny name of Neutitschein in german has about 27000 inhabitants, a lovely town-square and a lot of great buildings all over town.

One of the sidestreets, Msgr. Sramka, rather close to the big car-parking, is full of great Art Nouveau-buildings, like you will see them on the upper-part of my picture-combination.

PRIBOR - the birthplace of Siegmund Freud

by globetrott Updated Sep 26, 2012

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Pribor - 80km east of Olomouc

Pribor / Freiberg is a small town, about 80 km east of Olomouc and so it makes a great daytrip from there. Pribor has a nice townsquare, like you will see them at many places in Czechia, and it would not make sense to make a stopover there, except for lunch or dinner, but Pribor / Freiberg is also well known as the birthplace of Siegmund Freud, who was born there in may 6th, 1856 in Zamecnicka 117.
Freud lived there only until he was 4, then his parents left for Vienna ( where you can still see his appartment and ordination in a museum in Berggasse 19, close to Votivkirche)
Freud came back to Pribor once in 1872 for a small vacation.

The Triton fountain on Nmst Republiky

this excellent Triton Fountain is situated at Námìstí Republiky, opposite of the museum and it is a masterpiece of the sandstone-artist Wenzel Render, who also created quite a lot of the other famous fountains in the centre of Olomouc.
This type of Triton-fountain follows the one in Piazza Barberini in Rome, where dolphins are holding up the shell with a boy on top of it and this boy is holding a pair of "waterdogs" on chains.
In case that you want to search for it on your GPS :
    Its Coordinates are : 49°35'46.21"N,17°15'27.11"E

    the old pharmacy
    4 more images

This old pharmacy is nice to look at from outside and it even looks better inside, where you are of course mostly not able to take any pics. In any case I always love to see such old pharmacies, most of them have not changed their interior during the last 100 or even more years.
Lekarna is the czech word for pharmacy and this ancient pharmacy is just 50 meters from the townhall, on the main-square, so you really cannot miss it !

    Dolni Namesti in Olomouc
    4 more images

Dolni Namesti is another great townsquare close to Horni Namesti with the townhall and the great plague-column. Dolni namesti is a lot less crowded and less touristy and still it is worth taking a walk there in order to see for instance the column for Holy Mary and the lovely fountain opposite of it. Haunschild Palace (see my last 3 pics ) is one of the most beautiful palaces on Dolni Namesti.

Republic Square (Namesti Republiky) to the right

Go to Republic Square (Namesti Republiky) - about 5-10 min. on foot from Horni Namest (Upper Square).
The Republic Square is to the right - good place to park a car. View on Denisova Street with the Cathedral in the background on the picture.

Hradisko Abbey, Domenico Martinelli, 17th Century. Founded as a Benedictine monastery in 1078 by the Premsylids, it passed to the Premonstratenisians in 1150. In 1241 the monastery was destroyed by the Tartars, and in 1643 by the Swedes. Those vandals should stick to cars.
