Vilem of Pernstýn had the St. Bartholomew’s church built in the beginning of the 16th century to serve as the temple for a monastery he had founded in Pardubice prior to 1514. He then built the church on the remainings of a church from the 13th century which had been demolished by the Hussites in the beginning of the 1400s.
Inside the church there is a sandstone tomb with a marble gravestone with a life size figure of Vojtech of Pernstýn, dead in 1534.
Unfortunately you can not really get into the church since there is a glass door inside the entrance doors.

Walking towards the Pernstýn Square from the west you have long seen the Green Gate towering in front of you. Its 60m tall tower is visible close to anywhere in town.
The Green Gate got its present shape with the copper roof after a devastating fire in 1538. The spire is 60m tall, and the tower is during high season open to the public to admire the view.

At the eastern end of the Pernstýn Square there is a house with quite a uniqe facade. The house was built in the 16th century, but the facade dates from the 18th century. Since it shows Jonah being swallowed by the whale, the house is called Jonah's House, or Dum U Jonáse.

The Town Hall we noiw can see dates from a renovation of an older building. the renovation was performed from 1892 to -94.
The little greenish "thing" you can see between the two spires is a copper statue, depicting the city's old guard.

Watch out for the many great details in the facades on the main square of Pardubice / Padubitz.
These two gothic windows had been closed in renaissance times and beautifully decorated in order to keep the harmony of the great architecture.

The Holy Trinity Column was built in 1680 in order to thank god for the end of the plague.
I is a pity, That I had been in Pardubice when it was market-day, and all of the square was covered with tents and shops and it was impossible to get a picture of the whole column.
But I have at least a picture of this lovely small detail, includng the Austrian Double-eagle.

Have a look at this great row of houses.
When you click on my picture and take a closer look, you will realize that many of these facades were built in Baroque times in order to hide the much older and mostly steep roofs of gothic times behind of them.
Therefore the windows on the highest floor are simply fake or decorations.

This great building is next to the townhall, as you may see a part of the townhall's facade on the left of my picture.
For me it is always amazing to see, how small some of these houses are , as obviously the price of the ground was quite expensive, where the houses faced the town-square.
They mostly were much bigger in the back.

Dom U Jonase - on the townsquare opposite of the Green Gate is another great excemple of a unique facade.
When you click on my picture, you may see a great relief with the whale, swallowing Jonas.
The building is the oldest private house on the square and belongs to a bank today.

Beautiful Pardubice in East Bohemia (Böhmen).

The oldest record of Pardubice dates from the year 1295. The coat-of-arms is, however, much older. It refers to a legend of an event during the siege of Milan in 1158 when the falling gate cut the...
