 | Czech Republic Restaurants | Tips 1 - 10 of 124 | | The Grand Restaurant inside of the Mnicipal building / Obecni Dum is just opposite the Cafe, when you are in the entrance-hall of the Municipal building. There is a sign showing "No Photograph" - BUT when you are lucky, you are there at 11.30 a.m., when it is almost empty and the Maitre'D is on the phone, nodding towards me, when I showed my camera to him and asked to make a pic... I am sure that "NO photo" is ment for the time, when the guests want to enjoy their dinner, without beeing flashed from all sides by photomaniacs...
They have everything that is good and expensive & a large menu also in English and German displayed in the window. This is not at all a cheap place - but still cheaper than a similar restaurant with a great interior and great cuisine in France,Germany or USA... b.t.w.: an ordinary potatoe-soup was 485 Kronen ( 16 €) in Dec. 2004 !!! The restaurant is open daily 10.00 noon till 04.00p.m. and 06.00p.m. till 11.00p.m. Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: US$41 and up » Currency ConverterComparison: most expensiveAddress: Namesti Republiky 5Phone: 22002777Directions: This great restaurant is inside the Municipal building / Obecni dum , opposite of the Art Nouveau-cafe

What a great place to have your afternoon tea surrounded by Art Nouveau interior. The Municipal building / Obecni Dum - just next to the famous Powder Tower / Prasna Brana , was recently restored completely . That cafe looks really great and is well worth a visit.
This cafe is certainly not a place that the ordinary people in Prague may be able to afford. They still serve the cakes on a small wagon that is pushed by the waiter to your table. They have a great choice of cakes, and the espresso is great as well. Not a really cheap place - for 1 cake and 1 large espresso I payed around 120 Kronen (ca. 4 $) - this might be the reason, why it was almost empty there at 11.00 a.m. Leave a Comment Theme: LocalComparison: more expensive than averageAddress: Praha Namesti Republiky 5Directions: Inside the Municipal building - just next to the famous Powder Tower

Fantova Kavarna - a lovely cafe inside the main trainstation of Prague - is one of the most beautiful Art Nouveau Cafes in Prague, but most people simply do not know, as it's main entrance was blocked away by the highway. Is was built under a huge dome, beautifully decorated shortely before WW I. When you click on my pic, you may see the tables and chairs set up around the balcony in the middle - from there you may watch the people using the subway-passage to the trains.
In summer 2003 I had a double espresso and 2 Krapfen ( that is our german word, but I am not sure about the english expression ) and payed 50 Kronen. (less than 2 $) Simply check the small cake-buffet under the 2 big sculptures and point at your choice. In Dec. 2004 I payed 70 Kronen (2,3 €) for double espresso and an almond cake. Pivnice U Glaubicuis a restaurant that is built into the arcades of Malostranske Nam (close to St.Niklas-church) On my picture-combination you see the great arcades with about 40 seats outside and a lot more inside and the cheese-plates that made a perfect dinner once on a hot evening in summer 2003.
"Hermelin K Pivu" - camembert pickeled in oil and herbs - Tastes simply great !!! "Pivni Syr" - Beer cheese, as you may see on the right. It is served with a tiny extra glass of beer and that beer should be poured over the cheese, onions, mustard, and then dip in the cheese.. I simply REFUSED to do this - and it tasted great anyway. In summer 2003 I payed 59 Kronen for each plate of cheese and 46 Kronen for 1 litre of Pilsner Urquell makes a total of 164 Kronen ( ca. 5$) - a moderate price for us, but certainly too much for the average local population. In december 2004 I came back and found on the menu only a cheese-plate for 186 Kronen (6$) and also the beer was more expensive.... Well that is the beginning of EU-standarts, BUT prices are still a lot cheaper than other countries !! This is a really cheap self-service restaurant in the centre of Prague, close to "Karlova" in the street "Husova" THIS is a place, where local people go, and the food is really great !! English and german menus are printed in the windows ONLY , BUT inside, everything is written in Czech ONLY . BUT many of the servants speak very good german ( maybe also english ??) -
In summer 2003 I had a Bortsch-soup ( in a very big bowl, that might be enough for a small hunger ) 16 Kr. (0,50 $) 1 roll and some sort of goulash with Sauerkraut and 4 dumplings ( they actually charge them by slices !) and 1 litre of Pilsner Urquell... In total I payed the incredible amount of 105 Kronen ( ca. 3,3 €uro) and it tasted great and was too much for me with that great, thick Bortsch soup. ooooo ooooo ooooo ooooo In december 2004 the prices were partly a bit higher, and my meal of 2003 would have been around 120 Kronen (4 Euro) This time I tried the "Potatoe-rolls with poppy" - Kartoffelnudeln mit Mohn - a small portion for 29 Kronen, and a big protion for 43 Kronen. This great restaurant was built into one of the old watchtowers and is no the 6th floor. This tower is in the street "Jindrisska" close to the Main train station. You may take the lift up to have a great view over the city, and when walking down again you will pass by the restaurant.
I simply passed by, when it was not open yet, but a friendly waiter let me in in order to take my pics. It certainly must be great to have dinner in such an atmoshere. Most interesting dishes are about 280 Kronen and more + side dishes etc. Not a cheap place, but certainly a great place to go, when money does not matter so much. Cafe " Smetana " is most probably NOT the real name of this great restaurant/cafe situated directely at the Moldau-river in front of the Smetana-museum. Plenty of seats and tables are around Smetana's sculpture and he seems to be happy close to the river " Moldau " whom he dedicated his most famous work of music.
Take a coffe or ice-cream ! It is mainly a cafe and will close rather early at night ! AND then you may come again at night, when this cafe is empty and chairs and tables are still there to be used freely and you may enjoy the excellent view on the river and the Hradzin !! When crossing Charles Bridge you will see this old water-wheel at the end of the bridge on the left. The restaurant has a nice and shady garden facing the water-wheel. The whole area is almost free of cars and that fact adds a lot to the atmosphere !
I found this romantic place accidentally, as I wanted to see this water-wheel and found the cafe as well... I was there just for an espresso and some cake. Prices are a bit higher, according to the special location, But I do not remember the exact amount. Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageDirections: Have a look for the waterwheel from Charles-bridge and take down the stairs. It is just about 400 meters off the bridge, and pretty close to the "Lennon-wall"

Nebozizek /small snail-screw / kleiner Schneckenbohrer is quite an unusual name for this special restaurant with the great view to the Hradzin in Praguel ! They are open daily 11.00 a.m. - 11.00 p.m. and seat reservation is mostly a Must !! Take the cable-car to go there or walk up the hill...
They are mainly famous for their game-dishes This place is quite expensive, but it also has a great location with a great panorama. All year long they have a stylish restaurant to eat inside and in summer they have a seperate tent and additional tables in the garden, where you may as well have just a drink of coffee and a cake. Inside the restaurant all tables have white cloths and they will expect you to eat a meal, and a cover-charge will also apply. Have a look for this very special restaurant : It looks like a boat and you may sit in the terrace that looks like the stern of a ship. I had my motorhome parked just below that boat and for breakfast I had just a few steps. Prices are quite low still and most of the waiters will speak at least a bit of English or german ! They also had a german Menu.
I had 2 nice portions of Palazinki ( pancakes ) with icecream and a strong espresso & juice and payed a total of maybe 4 Euros. It is quite funny to see that palacinki are made in a different way all over Czechia ! Leave a Comment
