PRAGUE / PRAG > Cafe Smetana: Meet Bedrich Smetana for coffee !

by globetrott

Cafe " Smetana " is most probably NOT the real name of this great restaurant/cafe situated directely at the Moldau-river in front of the Smetana-museum.Plenty of seats and tables are around Smetana's sculpture and he seems to be happy close to the river " Moldau " whom he dedicated his most famous work of music. Take a coffe or ice-cream !It is mainly a cafe and will close rather early at night !AND then you may come again at night, when this cafe is empty and chairs and tables are still there to be used freely and you may enjoy the excellent view on the river and the Hradzin !!

PRAGUE / PRAG > Moulino Kampa: A romantic place in Prague

by globetrott

When crossing Charles Bridge you will see this old water-wheel at the end of the bridge on the left. The restaurant has a nice and shady garden facing the water-wheel.The whole area is almost free of cars and that fact adds a lot to the atmosphere ! I found this romantic place accidentally, as I wanted to see this water-wheel and found the cafe as well...I was there just for an espresso and some cake.Prices are a bit higher, according to the special location, But I do not remember the exact amount.

PRAGUE / PRAG > U Bakalare: Another great & cheap selfservice

by globetrott

This great self service restaurant is about 500 meters from the famous "Powder Tower"The staff speaks fluently German and also some English. It might be some sort of a cafeteria for the nearby university, but many tourists go there as well. You may see what you get in a vitrine and there is also a small menu in English and german. In summer 2003 I was there to have a late breakfast with cake and espresso and once for lunch with roasted pork and beer For roasted pork with Sauerkraut and dumplings + 0,5 l beer I payed about 100 Kronen. In december 2004 I had 2 open sandwiches with espresso for breakfast and payed around 70 Kronen

PRAGUE / PRAG > Ceska Kuchyne: a great lunch in Prague for just 3,3 €uros

by globetrott

This is a really cheap self-service restaurant in the centre of Prague, close to "Karlova" in the street "Husova"THIS is a place, where local people go, and the food is really great !!English and german menus are printed in the windows ONLY , BUT inside, everything is written in Czech ONLY .BUT many of the servants speak very good german ( maybe also english ??) - In summer 2003 I had a Bortsch-soup ( in a very big bowl, that might be enough for a small hunger ) 16 Kr. (0,50 $)1 roll and some sort of goulash with Sauerkraut and 4 dumplings ( they actually charge them by slices !)and 1 litre of Pilsner Urquell...In total I payed the incredible amount of 105 Kronen ( ca. 3,3 €uro) and it tasted great and was too much for me with that great, thick Bortsch soup.ooooo ooooo ooooo oooooIn december 2004 the prices were partly a bit higher, and my meal of 2003 would have been around 120 Kronen...

PRAGUE > Pivnice U Glaubicu: My favorite place for cheese & beer

by globetrott

Pivnice U Glaubicuis a restaurant that is built into the arcades of Malostranske Nam (close to St.Niklas-church)On my picture-combination you see the great arcades with about 40 seats outside and a lot more inside and the cheese-plates that made a perfect dinner once on a hot evening in summer 2003. "Hermelin K Pivu" - camembert pickeled in oil and herbs - Tastes simply great !!! "Pivni Syr" - Beer cheese, as you may see on the right. It is served with a tiny extra glass of beer and that beer should be poured over the cheese, onions, mustard, and then dip in the cheese..I simply REFUSED to do this - and it tasted great anyway. In summer 2003 I payed 59 Kronen for each plate of cheese and 46 Kronen for 1 litre of Pilsner Urquellmakes a total of 164 Kronen ( ca. 5$) - a moderate price for us, but certainly too much for the average local population. In december 2004 I came back and found on...

PRAGUE > Petrin hill > Nebozizek: Dining in style high above Prague

by globetrott

Nebozizek /small snail-screw / kleiner Schneckenbohrer is quite an unusual name for this special restaurant with the great view to the Hradzin in Praguel !They are open daily 11.00 a.m. - 11.00 p.m. and seat reservation is mostly a Must !!Take the cable-car to go there or walk up the hill... They are mainly famous for their game-dishesThis place is quite expensive, but it also has a great location with a great panorama. All year long they have a stylish restaurant to eat inside and in summer they have a seperate tent and additional tables in the garden, where you may as well have just a drink of coffee and a cake.Inside the restaurant all tables have white cloths and they will expect you to eat a meal, and a cover-charge will also apply.

PRAGUE > Restaurant Jindrisska Vez: A restaurant inside an old tower

by globetrott

This great restaurant was built into one of the old watchtowers and is no the 6th floor. This tower is in the street "Jindrisska" close to the Main train station. You may take the lift up to have a great view over the city, and when walking down again you will pass by the restaurant. I simply passed by, when it was not open yet, but a friendly waiter let me in in order to take my pics.It certainly must be great to have dinner in such an atmoshere. Most interesting dishes are about 280 Kronen and more + side dishes etc.Not a cheap place, but certainly a great place to go, when money does not matter so much.

Tip Photo
PRAGUE > The Restaurant in Obecni dum: A unique and expensive restaurant

by globetrott

The Grand Restaurant inside of the Mnicipal building / Obecni Dum is just opposite the Cafe, when you are in the entrance-hall of the Municipal building. There is a sign showing "No Photograph" - BUT when you are lucky, you are there at 11.30 a.m., when it is almost empty and the Maitre'D is on the phone, nodding towards me, when I showed my camera to him and asked to make a pic...I am sure that "NO photo" is ment for the time, when the guests want to enjoy their dinner, without beeing flashed from all sides by photomaniacs... They have everything that is good and expensive & a large menualso in English and German displayed in the window. This is not at all a cheap place - but still cheaper than a similar restaurantwith a great interior and great cuisine in France,Germany or USA...b.t.w.: an ordinary potatoe-soup was 485 Kronen ( 16 €) in Dec. 2004 !!!The restaurant is open daily10.00...

Prague / Praha > Cafe in Obecni Dum: The Art Nouveau Cafe in the Municipal building

by globetrott

What a great place to have your afternoon tea surrounded by Art Nouveau interior. The Municipal building / Obecni Dum - just next to the famous Powder Tower / Prasna Brana , was recently restored completely .That cafe looks really great and is well worth a visit. This cafe is certainly not a place that the ordinary people in Prague may be able to afford. They still serve the cakes on a small wagon that is pushed by the waiter to your table. They have a great choice of cakes, and the espresso is great as well. Not a really cheap place - for 1 cake and 1 large espresso I payed around 120 Kronen(ca. 4 $) - this might be the reason, why it was almost empty there at 11.00 a.m.

Restaurace U Marusky: fruit dumplings to die for

by richiecdisc

A no frills affair with wooden tables but well kept and right on the way into the main square. Beer selection is a definite plus!Went back this summer and it has spruced itself up a bit but still a nice funky wooden affair. There a comfy sofa over by the bar and they had Starobrno from Brno on tap too! The meal of fried pork cutlet with potato salad for 82 kc ($2.25) washed down with with inexpensive drafts was nice but the real pleasure was a blueberry knodell for 20 kc (55 cents) paired with the hard to find beer, Cerveny Drak, a marvelously sourish strong brew from Starobrno.
