Richmond's Restaurant Tip

by Richmond

Czech cuisine is basically central European, with German, Hungarian and Polish influences. Meat is a huge feature, along with big portions of dumplings, potatoes or rice topped with a thick sauce, and a heavily cooked vegetable or sauerkraut; the standard quick meal is knedlo-zelo-vepro (dumplings, sauerkraut and roast pork). Caraway seed, bacon and lots of salt are the common flavourings. Vegetarians and cholesterol sufferers beware!

There are so many good restaurants in Prague, it's hard to go wrong. Several good ones are found at the bottom of cellars, housed in old stone. With a good local beer or a bottle of fine light Moravian wine, the filling Czech food is perfect after a long day of signtseeing.Three of my favorites were U Zatisi; Mucha; and Kampa Park. There is also one (with a piano player in a cellar) that I think goes by the Czech translation of 'Blue Rose'. Czech dishes are very meat-oriented, including fried or roasted pork / beef, covered in a simple sauce and served with dumplings, potatoes, or sauerkraut. Some of my favorites included: Knedlo-Vepro-Zelo: pork with dumplings and sauerkraut and Svickova: pot-roasted beef in a rich creamy vegetable sauce and served with cranberries, whipped cream, and dumplings. Also try the Bramboráky: deep-potato pancakes. I'm not big on desserts, but most...

Actually you can find all...

by pavlag

Actually you can find all diferent world cuisines here. Nearly in every smaller town is an Italian restaurant or at least pizzeria, in some even a chinese restaurant. But let you your time to find out the real czech cuisine. Pass by all the tourist Czech restaurant traps, where you do get czech cuisine, but at foreign prices, and look for names as 'hospoda' 'pivnice' or 'bufet' (pub could be the translation) with daily menu written by chalk on black board outside the entrance or not at all. Inside will probably noone speak english or german or just really a little, but you will get much better taste of czech meals.Doesn't matter what you try, nothing from czech cuisine is suited for a slimming diet, so be prepared for a little bit more fat and mostly no vegetable at all or maybe some canned one. But it is due this sooo juicy and tasty !!! Try 'knedlo-vepro-zelo' (veprova pecene s...

When you visit (and you must)...

by Jsemsquash

When you visit (and you must) Cesky Krumlov, there is a restaurant to your right just as you leave the Castle there. It is an excellent restaurant, inside and outside. (The outside has a lovely view of the town) and my favorite dish there would be... the dumplings! Yum yum, this is authentic Czech cuisine, and it is delicious. I ordered mine with duck...a recommendation from the hot Czech guy we were eating with.

by prazacek

In the Czech Republic you can find all sorts of restaurants - from very expensive ones to local pubs where meal costs 50 Kc. Expensive restaurants are found in big cities (Prague, Brno, Olomouc, Ostrava) or favorite tourist destinations (Carlsbad, Pec pod Snezkou, Spindelruv Mlyn). Cheap restaurants are found everywhere :) My most favorite menu item is Svickova sauce - it depends a lot on the quality of chef and restaurant. It is very difficult to make that sauce, but, believe or not, the best Svickova is from cheap local restaurants .... mmmm, you gotta taste it! :)

Klub Arkitectu. This is in an old 16th century basement and the decor is great! Dim lighting with low hanging lamps and great service staff. - Tell Karl that Nate from Oregon sent ya!You can get a killer meal for around $5. Salmon on potatoe pancakes with mustard. Cheese pasta is also good for vegetarian fare.
