 | Czech Republic Things To Do | Tips 51 - 60 of 444 | | This is the infamous bone church you may have heard about and let me tell you its everything anybody has ever said. Its creepy, its cool and most of all jsut plain amazing. Its started when 40,000 people died duringthe plague and many years later were dug up to make room for more dead people. the bones were piled next to the church until a carpenter named Frantisek Rint decided to engage in the maccabre hobby of art with bones. He created many cool objects such as a chaldelier and coat of arms for the Schwarzenberg family and wall sconces. Check out the detail of the coat of arms, there is a bird plucking the eye out of a skull which is meant to represent a Schwarzenberg warrior defeating a Ottoman warrior. Jindrichuv Hradec Chateau is one of the most beautiful and largest castles in the Czech Republic. It does not receive so many visitors like Cesky Kurmalov and Karlstejn. This is probably because the town of Jindrichuv Hradec is a little off the tourist circuit. Like so many of the castles in the Czech Republic was built over the centuries in a variety of architectural designs. However unlike some of the other more famous castles that I visited this castle contains better example of Gothic or medieval architecture. The castle is splendidly situated surrounded by rivers and two ponds. Inside of the castle grounds there are three arcaded courtyards. The third one has great opportunities for photos of the Rotunda and a very interesting well cage of somekind. The Rotunda was built in the 17th century in the Mannerist style and is used for concerts. There are several tours offered of the castle all of which cost 65kc but 140kc if you want to take one in English. If you do not want to, then take a Czech language and the custodians will give you a English language brochure. I took the Gothic tour which was quite interesting especially for the room containing the Gothic frescos depicting the Legend of St. George. There is also a fascinating medieval kitchen recreation exhibited. Unfortunately if you want to climb up the Black Tower, you have to pay extra. The Jindrichuv Hradec Chateau is open from 9am to 5pm during the tourist season and is closed on Mondays. The Pilsner Urquell Brewery is the highlight attraction of the city of Plzen. In fact it is this brewery that make Plzen more than just another pretty Czech town. Pilsner is of course a world famous beer and the very first pilsner ever brewed. A visit here is like visiting a beer shrine and must for beer lovers like me. The tour is one hour long and includes a short film documenting the history of the brewery. After the film you are taken by way of a guide, through the brewing rooms and the deep tunnels where the beer ferments. There is also beer tasting along the way. There are about four English speaking tours each weekday but the hours of these seemed erratic as mine started earlier than it was suppose to. The tour cost 180kc. Cesky Krumlov is one of my favourite towns in all of Europe. It is small medieval town located in southern Bohemia just south of the larger Cesky Budejovice. The S-curved Vlatava River winds through the old town with quaint little bridges crossing it with the very large Castle overlooking. The castle is the second largest Bohemian castle in the Czech Republic behind Prague’s and in my opinion far more interesting. When I was there in 1998, there was plenty of cheap accommodation. Bar Bar was the best pub in town for 30 cent drafts and the people were incredibly friendly. Prices have bound to go up but this World Heritage Site will continue to impress. Cesky krumlov. What can I say about this city? It's hard to describe the feeling..its love at first sight. Whether crossing the bridges, walking along the river, climbing the Krumlov tower, strolling in the castle's ground, this small charming town is a must see for all and I must come back in summer. To me, this cathedral is the climax of all the Bohemian Gothic buildings in Prague. I just stood at the square, amazed at the granduer and mystic of it all! To make things even liveier was a huge Christmas Market on the square selling of kinds of yummy food and beautiful trinkets. Leave a Comment

To think that 5 months ago, this city was being flooded when the Vlata burst its banks. But other than the metro and some damages to houses along the Mala Strana, everything seems normal again. Here's one of the statues that's on this mystical bridge. Leave a Comment

Well this is what happen when you don't understand Czech and don't pay attention! Well..for one, I did not know I had to change trains and nearly missed the connecting train. To make things worse, I overshot the station and had to backtrack to Kutna Hora. That was walking through miles and miles of the Czech countryside. It's cold and wet. A very miserable day indeed. Backtracked for 3 hours(walking non stop) before reaching Kutna Hora! Leave a Comment

Well.I can't say much about the Jewish quarter except that it's a rip off. I'm not going to pay 15USD to see a cemetry and another 10USD to get into the synagoue! So, being the cheap traveller, I am contend on walking around the quarter which was quite charming and would be even lovelier without souvenier stalls at every street end/corner. Leave a Comment

Cesky Krumlov is on the UNESCO World Heritage list and deservedly so, with it's nearly intact old town center. It is unfortunately a bit too accessible and well know so plan your visit for off season and mid-week to avoid seeing it in too crowded condtions. Though it is rapidly changing and all of the best beer places I tried to find had been replaced with pizza joints or upscale cafes, wandering the cobblestone streets is still like stepping back in time.
