The Church of Our Lady Before Tyn is located at the Old Town Square in the heart of the Old Town of Prague. This Gothic style church with its twin spired towers is a popular landmark in the Old Town. The 80 meter high towers can be seen from many sections of the city of Prague especially from the area around the Prague Castle. The church is lovely to look at by day and striking by night as depicted on our hidden photograph on the right! It is the main and most important church in Prague since the 14th century. The history of the church dates back to the 11th century when a Romanesque style church was erected at the same location. It was demolished later to make way for the Church of Our Lady Before Tyn which began construction in the early 14th century during the reign of King Charels IV. It was not fully completed until the 16th century. The church was designed by Petr Parler. It is approximately 50 meters long and 30 meters wide. Several tombs are located in the church and the most famous one is the tomb of Tycho Brahe, a famous astronomer and mathematician from Denmark. Many Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque paintings are located in the church. The main altar is decorated with a painting by Karel Skreta. Don't miss this fascinating church when you visit the city of Prague on your vacation! A region in the Czech Republic I absolutely love the "Giant's Mountains" = Krkonose (with accent on the s/š), with the highest peak (Snezka/again with accent on the z) at about 1600 metres. It is fabulous for hiking, there are spa towns dotted in the valleys. And in the mountains there are many big buildings (bouda) where you can eat and stay. The most famous one is the Lucní bouda, and one at Snezka (Schronisko na Sniezce) which BTW is right at the Polish border. It is a national park: Krkonošský národní park (KRNAP). The mountains are also great for skiing (Špindleruv Mlýn, Harrachov) - but of course, this does not apply to the time of your stay. From Prague you would travel to Trutnov, and from there to - best - Pec pod Snežkou, Vrchlabí or the already mentioned ski resorts, take a lift up the hills or walk from the bottom. You can also walk to the spring of the river Elbe (Labe) from - thus the name - Vrchlabí which means nothing else than Upper Elbe. Another fabulous region for walking are the forests of Adrspasske skaly, located in Eastern Bohemia, with fantastic rock formations, created by erosion (water, wind). As children we loved this because all the rocks have names, like the Mayor and his Wife, etc. And they really look like this :-) There are also some nice lakes. From there you can also walk to similar rocks: Teplicke skaly. The main town is Teplice nad Metuji.
