Ostrava (Ostrau)

by Leipzig

Entering Ostrava you will be quite shocked - industrial plants all over. Along the highways you see huge factories, plants and mines. However, the centre offers you another part of the town. Historic old buildings and a beautifully and colorfully restorated cathedral.Ostrava is the third largest city in Czech Republic with about 300.000 inhabitants. Its foundation dates back to the 13th century, when the "Amber Route" led through the area from the Baltic States to the Mediterranean Sea. The little village turned to a metropolis in the 18th century, when coal deposits were discovered and a lot of industries settled down.Coal mining within the city was stopped in 1994 and therefore a huge income sector broke away. Meanwhile the city has developed to a centre of trading as well as education - Ostrava has two universities.

PRAGUE - Charlesbridge / Karluv Most

by globetrott

Charlesbridge / Karluv most is 520 meters long and 10 meters wide and it is the eldest and most important bridge of Prague. It dates back to 1172 , but broke down in 1342. The new architect Peter Parler started to build a new bridge, and used parts of the old one, therefore the bridge is not completely straight. The bridge was finally finished at the beginning of the 15th century. In the 17th century the bridge got the 30 sculptures made by various artists. The most important of these sculptures is the one of Johann Nepomuk, who was drowned at this bridge in 1393 by king Wentzel IV.All day and all night you will see lots of pedestrians crossing the bridge or listening there to the musicians in the evening.During the day the bridge is also a shopping-paradise for tourists...

Karlstejn - a lot more than just a nice castle

by globetrott

Karlstejn castle was never built as a fortification , but from the beginning it was ment simply to be a safe place to store the crown jewels and most of the treasures of Bohemia.Karl IV had the idea to have the castle built and the french architect Matthias von Arras built the castle between 1348 and 1357.Today most of the treasures are to be seen in Vienna or Prague !!NO Photography inside the castle !!You may get inside the main court of the castle, walk around there and take your pics, as soon as you make the guided tour of the castle-interior, NO more photography...BUT there is a lot more to see in Karlstejn :1)A wax-cabinet about persons of Cechia's history 2)The Museum of Nativity Scenes is in the village of Karlstejn, about halfway to the castle. It shows plenty of great christmas-decorations and cribs ( Boehmische Weihnachtkrippen ) in the old vicarage of Karlstejn. 3)the...

Ceske Budejovice - 100km south of Prague

by globetrott

Ceske Budejovice / Budweis is a lot more than just the home of the famous beer !The main square of Ceske Budejovice is one of the biggest squares of Europe. There is a great fountain in the middle and lots of wonderful baroque buildings around the square. On all the square you may find only houses with arcades for easy and dry shopping, even when it is raining. And of course, many of the restaurants and cafes also have a part of their guest-gardens inside these arcades. The townhall of Ceske Budejovice is quite impressive and looks great in its very special kind of architecture. The black tower is visible from almost every place and street in town, and might help you, when you are lost at night - after a few glasses of the famous local beer...And you may also step up the plenty steps to get the great view over the town and the square. Not far from the square you will see a museum for old...

Brno / Brünn - 200km south-east of Prague

by globetrott

Brno / Brünn is the birthplace of my father and I have been there already in Communiste times and then again recently. Some people expect a simple industrial town, BUT Brno has also a great castle - Spielberk and a lot of places of interest in the old town :The old townhall is a must for every tourist and it is easy to get there, as you may see the high tower from almost any place in Brno. You may climb up the tower and have a perfect panonrama-view and also the interior of the old townhall is worth a visit !A big crocodile is hanging down from the ceiling of the arcade of the old townhall of Brno / Brünn.It was a donation by emperor Mathias Corvinus to the city of Brünn in 1608.The Mahen theatre was built 1881-1882 and was the first theatre to get electric light. The cathedral of St.Peter and Paul my be seen already from a big distance, as it was built on top of Petrin-hill.The church...

Telc - 150km south-east of Prague

by globetrott

Telc / Teltsch is a small village of only 6000 inhabitants, 75 Km west of Brno / Brünn.The UNESCO declared the town-square of Telc to be a "World heritage" , as it consists only of beautiful and unique baroque buildings. You need about 10 minutes to walk from the big parking to the historic town-square of Telc. You will walk by a lovely lake and see the monastery of Telc first. Then you enter a gate and will get into a completely different world, full of great baroque buildings !The town-square - called namesti Zachariase z Hradce / Zarachias von Neuhaus-Platz - is made like a giant triangle. In 1530 the town burned down and had to be rebuilt completely new. This is one of the reasons , why all of the buildings seem to be built by the same architect, although they are all different .It is absolutely worth to walk to the very end of the town-square, far behind the plague-column.There, at the...

In 1348 Kaiser Karl IV was hunting in that area and found the healthy hot wells, because one of his hunting-dogs burnt its feet in the hot wells. In 1370 Karlsbad was granted the " rights of a town " by the emperor, who was a guest here many times, followed by hundreds of celebrities over the following centuries:Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Mozart, Tsar Peter the Great, Ludwig van Beethoven, Antonin Dvorak, Frederic Chopin, Franz Liszt and a lot more......like Globetrott in july 14th, 2003 - as you may easily see on the "flower-calendar"Watch out for the lovely places and nice architecture around the castle-hill of Karlovy Vary / Karlsbad.Obviously every little space is used for a building, a palmtree or anything else to make finally a cosy athmosphere, only to be found in a famous spa like Kalsbad.Dvorak Park is a great place to relax and to listen to the musicians performing in the first...

Marianske Lazne - mainly well known by it's german name Marienbad is a small town of 15000 inhabitants, maybe 60 km west of Plsen.Marienbad is a great place for a stop-over of maybe 2-3 hours. Leave you car in the outskirts and take a WALK - that is the best way not to miss anything.Marianske Lazne / Marienbad was made a spa around the year 1800 A.D., when the marshy ground was artificially dried out and built into the central park. The 40 healthy mineral springs were used for the fountains and wells like Kolonada, where everybody may go and drink the water directely from the spring. The main Kolonada was built in 1889 by cast iron and has beautiful paintings inside on some walls and all of the ceiling. The size of this kolonada is really gigantic with a total length of 120 meters and a hight of more than 10 meters.Inside the Kolonada you may buy small typical jugs in order to drink the...

Liberec / Reichenau is the 3rd largest city in Czechia today with about 100.000 inhabitants. It is Czechia's centre of Wool- and Textile-production. In 1906 Lidove Sady, Bohemia's first Zoo was built in Liberec.Liberec / Reichenau had a majority of German speaking inhabitants at 1938, when it became the administrative capital of the " Sudetenland " that was occupied by Germany during the 2nd WW.Most of the Czech population had to leave the town immediately, being expelled by the german troops...After WW II the germans were expelled from Liberec, and lost all of their properties there. At some places of Liberec / Reichenberg you may still see the glory and prosperity of the times around the end of the 19th century, the time, when architects from Vienna were ordered to build more or less copies of buildings of Vienna. The townhall, built 1888-93 by architect Franz von Neumann, is a good...
