Sedlec (bonechurch) - 60km east of Prague

by globetrott

40.000 people were buried over the centuries on the small cemetery of Sedlec - 3 Km off the town-centre of Kutna Hora. The cemetery was part of the nearby Monastery St.Mary and had to be reduced in space in the year 1870.Thousands of Skeletons had to be undug and stored inside the church......and a woodcarver named Frantisek Rint had an idea, how to arrange these bones in a very special, artistic way .Frantisek Rint bleached the bones first by some chemicals and finally arranged all of the bones and skulls in a funny way and with some sort of the typical strange kind of humor you may find all over Czechia in art, literature and even in the way they treated the Russian occupants for several decades...Each and every kind of bones was used for these decorations and today the bone-church is one of the major tourist-attactions in the region and maybe even the whole country. For a lot more...

Kutna Hora - 60km east of Prague

by globetrott

The Welsh court / Vlassky Dvur in Kutna Hora was one of the castles of the Bohemian kings and was also used as the place, where all coins of Bohemia were produced for about 250 years. On a guided tour through the palace you may see samples of all coins, having been produced there. The Production of all Silver Coins in Bohemia was finally made only in Kutna Hora, as the silver came from the nearby Silver Mines.About 2000 coins were made every day, simply with a hammer, smashed on a form put on top of the raw silver-coin.Inside the museum you may see such a scenery set up by puppets. The cathedral of Kutna Hora is built in a unique " Bohemian gothic style " and was consecrated to St. Barbara, the patron of all miners, as most of the population was working in the nearby Silver-mines.It was first built in 1388 and was partly re-constructed in the 19th century, when it also got this unique roof...

Terezin/Theresienstadt - 55km north of Prague

by globetrott

Terezin / Theresienstadt was not only an "ordinary" KZ by the Nazis, but it was also a place for their propaganda :Inside the walled town of Terezin they build an "autonome jewish ghetto" with their own newspaper, theatre, orchestra, barbershop etc......simply in order to make the delegations of the red cross believe, that nobody was killed there. At the same time they had another KZ inside the "small fortress", where people were held in prison, killed or deported to other KZs...Terezin still looks like in WW II at some places, with a certain kind of grey covering all of the buildings and giving it an atmosphere like in old black&white movies. The Holokaust-museum is a must : You may buy there a ticket-combination for all the sights of Terezin and the museum on 1st floor that will help you to learn about that terrible time.In the shop you may buy video-tapes, books and brochures about life...

Trebic - the Jewish quarter

by magor65

Year of inscription in the UNESCO list - 2003For years Trebic used to be the centre of Jewish culture in Moravia. Although the mutual relationships between the Christians an Jews not always went smoothly, the Jewish community existed here from the 14th century to the times of the WWII.Today the Jewish quarter in Trebic reminds us of the past. Dense housing, dark corners, vaulted passages, the maze of narrow cobbled streets bring to mind the days bygone. The completely reconstructed Rear Synagogue is no longer used for religious purposes as there is no Jews community in Trebic. It houses the exhibition of the history of the former ghetto and is used for concerts and seminars. The Jewish cemetery is one of the biggest and best preserved in the Czech Republic, It is romantically located on the hill among old trees. The cemetery contains nearly 3000 tombstones - the oldest ones dating back to...

Trebic - Basilica of St. Procopius

by magor65

Year of inscription in the UNESCO Heritage list - 2003Trebic is a town where two cultures - Christian and Jewish, coexisted for centuries side by side. No wonder that the elements of these two cultures have been honoured by being included in the Unesco World Heritage list. The famous Christian monument is the basilica of St Procopius. The architecture of the basilica is an example of transition between the Romanesque and Gothic styles. For some time the buiding was used for secular purposes. In the 17th century the Swedish made here the beer cellars and stables. The most valuable parts of the basilica are a magnificent northern portal called Portal paradisi and the rose window in the eastern part of the apse (it's hidden behind the altar , so it can be seen only from the outside).Another place deserving special attention is the crypt with more than seven hundred years old timbering of the...

Olomouc - Holy Trinity column

by magor65

Year of inscription in the UNESCO Heritage list - 2000Although only Holy Trinity column is inscribed in the Unesco Heritage list, Olomouc is a beautiful city, with a long and rich history and many places of interest. I would call it the city of fountains - everywhere you go in the city centre you come across one. The churches of Olomouc are very interesting, too. The old church of St Moritz which looks a bit like a fortress boasts the biggest organ in the Czech Republic. St Michael which resembles the neo-Romanesque basilica inside surprises visitors with rich Baroque decorations. And the cathedral of St Wenceslas, a bit farther from the city centre, located on the grounds of the Premyslid castle, makes a lasting impression because of its size and a 100 metre spire. But we came here for the Holy Trinity column. It does look impressive with its height of 35 metres. But it's not just size -...

Kromeriz - gardens and castle

by magor65

Year of inscription in the UNESCO Heritage list - 1998The town of Kromeriz is quite pretty - it has a big market square with colourful Baroque buildings and a few interesting churches. The town was the seat of bishops from the Middle Ages up to the 19th century. The highlight of Kromeriz is the archbishop's castle and gardens. Lots of visitors come to the castle to see its collection of paintings, coins and manuscripts. Works of such artists as Titian, Breughel, van Dyck or Cranach are on display here. Behind the palace spreads the park which is said to be the masterpiece of park architecture with artificial ponds and pavillions. But what I liked best in Kromeriz was the flower garden. It has neatly cut hedges and colourful beautifully arranged flowerbeds which make it a wonderful example of Baroque garden art. You can get the best view of it from the top of the long columnade in the...

Holasovice - Village reservation

by magor65

Year of inscription in the UNESCO World Heritage list - 1998The village of Holasovice is a well-preserved example of a traditional village in central Europe. The buildings are arranged in rows on both sides of the village square. They were constructed in so called folk Baroque style in the years 1840-1880. Similar in size and shape, they differ in facade colours and decorations as well as the gable shapes. The plague column at the north end of the village reminds us about the greatest tragedy in the history of Holasovice. In 1520-25 the great plague killed here all but two inhabitants. The best time to visit Holasovice is July when Peasant Pageants are held with presentations of old Bohemian crafts. In other months it is a sleepy village, which is undoubtedly worth visiting if you are in the area.

Kutna Hora - once the treasury of the country

by magor65

Year of inscription in the UNESCO World Heritage list - 1995Kutna Hora flourished in the 1300 due to silver mining. The town provided most of silver to make coins circulating in Europe in those times. Because of its wealth, Kutna Hora competed with Prague in the field of economy, art and culture. The town has preserved its typical medieval layout. It's fascinating to walk along its narrow cobbled streets looking around for charming nooks and places of interest. The most magnificent church of Kutna Hora and one of the most impressive I have ever seen is the cathedral of St Barbara (the patron saint of miners - which shouldn't surprise anyone who knows a little of the city's history). The construction of the cathedral was started in 1388 and the structure was to equal the Prague cathedral of St Vitus. Although the construction was interupted several times and never reached the intended...
