Zelena Hora-pilgrimage church of St John Nepomuk

by magor65

Year of inscription in the UNESCO World Heritage list - 1994The church of St John Nepomuk was the only Unesco site that I was disappointed with. In spite of its interesting history and beautiful pictures I had seen prior to the visit I couldn't work up much enthusiasm when we got to the place. Perhaps it was because it was hard to find as we had problems with driving through the city of Zdar due to numerous detours. Or perhaps the reason was the rude guide who sent us three times back to the entrance which was close although it was still one hour before closing time, so we had problems with buying the tickets. All in all, when we finally got inside the church, we didn't find anything outstanding enough to make our spirits high. However, the story of the church is very interesting. It's the masterpiece of the Czech-Italian architect Jan Santini, who built it as the combination of Gothic...

Telc - historic centre

by magor65

Year of inscription in the UNESCO World Heritage list - 1992Today Telc is a small town with the population of just 6000 people. Originally, it was a royal water fortress built in the 13th century at an intersection of busy trade routes. In the times to follow it was the possession of several noble families. The highlight of the city is the market square lined with Renaissance and Baroque buildings with picturesque facades and arcades. Small historical details such as fountains or the column of Virgin Mary add extra charm to the overall impression. All buildings are picturesque and interesting but some are outstanding. Let me mention here house number 61 with figurative sgraffito decorations in the shade of white and grey or the corner house number 15 with the beautiful bay window. The best example of the Baroque house is number 59 with diagonally rounded pilasters which reach from the foot...

Cesky Krumlov - Old Town

by magor65

Year of inscription in the UNESCO World Heritage list - 1992In the past ten gates led to the town, of which only one has been preserved - Budejovice Gate. If you come to the town through this gate you will immediately get immersed in the atmosphere of Middle Ages. The gate leads visitors to the oldest street in Cesky Krumlov and to the suburb of Latran lined with charming houses once inhabited by servants to the castle. Each building is unique and beautiful. My attention was caught by house number 39 which has the painting of Rozmberk Rider on its facade. Latran is connected with the Old Town by the wooden Barber's Bridge over the river Vltava which meandring forms the natural boundary of the Old Town. Its central square is surrounded by Gothic and Renaissance houses with arcades. The Townhall was made by joining two narrow Gothic buildings into one impressive Renaissance structure. The...

Cesky Krumlov - the castle

by magor65

Year of inscription in the UNESCO World Heritage list - 1992The castle complex of Cesky Krumlov is oe of the largest in central Europe. It consists of forty buildings arranged around five courtyards. The castle gardens occupy the area of 11 hectares. Visitors usually start their stroll through the chateau grounds at the first courtyard which has a bear moat. Actually, there are three bears living in the pit and keeping bears is an old tradition going back to the rule of the Rozmberks in the 16th century. From the second courtyard, after paying a small fee ( about 1,3 Euro) you can get to the Tower of Hradek (Little castle). The terrace on its top offers a wonderful view of the town and the chateau set against the landscape in the background.A tour of the interiors is possible in several versions (route A, Route B, and Route C - visiting the Baroque theatre). We decided on Route A which...

Cesky Krumlov - the place where time has stopped

by magor65

Date of inscription as the UNESCO Heritage site - 1992Cesky Krumlov lies in the meandring valley of the Vltava river, which almost encircles the Old Town. The castle complex erected on the rock promontory on the other side of the river dominates the town. The greatest prosperity of Cesky Krumlov dates back to the rule of the Rozmberk family (1302- 1602) who chose the place to be their seat. They gave the chateau its Renaissance form and made it into a magnificent noble residence. Their symbol - a red five petalled rose can be spotted everywhere - on the paintings, house facades, souvenir shops, etc. Another important noble family that resided in Krumlov were the Schwarzenbergs who gave the castle its Baroque appearance. The fame of Krumlov as a true gem of medieval architecture is widely spread so you should expect crowds of tourists along the way. But the charm of the place is...

Prague Astronomical Clock in old town squarePowder Gate (Prašná brána)The 65m-tall Powder Tower was begun in 1475 during the reign of King Vladislav II Jagiello to form one of the 13 entrances to the Old Town. In 1483 it was left unfinished because the king moved to Prague Castle. Between 1875 and 1886 the tower was rebuilt, decorated and steepled by Josef Mocker. The gate acquired its present name in the 17th century when it was used to store gunpowder. Today, there is a small exhibition about the tower and it is open for great viewsPrague Castle is the most popular sight visited in Prague. It is the largest ancient castle in the world (570 m long, on average 128 m wide, area 7.28 hectares). Constructed in the 9th century by Prince Bořivoj, the castle transformed itself from a wooden fortress surrounded by earthen bulwarks to the imposing form it has today. Rulers made their...

Dancing House, Prague

by hopang

The Dancing House is located at the junctions of Rasinovo nabrezi and Resslovo Street at the bank of Vitava River in the heart of the city of Prague. This is an unusual shaped seven storey office building belonging to the Nationale-Nederlanden. It was constructed in 1996 and was designed by Vlado Milunic and Frank Gehry. The building was formerly known as Fred and Ginger, named after the popular dancing duo Ginger Rogers and Fred Astair. The Dancing House resembles a man and a woman dancing cheek-to-cheek! It is occupied by private offices and is not opened to the public except for the top floor French restaurant known as La Perle de Prague located at level 7. The restaurant's homepage and telephone number are indicated below.

The Powder Gate, Prague

by hopang

The Powder Gate (Prasná Brána) is located next to the Municipal House between the Old Town Square and Namesti Republiky in the city of Prague. It marks the beginning of the one kilometer long Royal Route. The Powder Gate was one of the 13 main towers erected along the fortification wall of the Old Town. It is the only tower still standing today and is well preserved by the authority. The history of the Powder Gate dates back to the 11th century. The present Gothic style gate was reconstructed in 1475 during the reign of King Vladislav II Jagiello.
