Charles Bridge, Prague

by hopang

Charles Bridge (Karluv most) crosses Vitava River and links the Old Town with Lesser Quarter at Mala Strana in the heart of the city of Prague. Construction of this Gothic style stone bridge began in the middle of the 14th century during the reign of King Charles IV but did not complete until the beginning of the 15th century. It was formerly known as Stone Bridge until the middle of the 19th century when its name changed to Charles Bridge. It was designed by Petr Parler, a famous Czech architect. The total length of Charles Bridge is slightly more than 500 meters and the width is approximately 10 meters. Towers were constructed on both ends of the bridge which has a total of 16 arches. Charles Bridge was decorated with approximately 30 Baroque statues of saints on either side of the bridge from the 17th century to the 19th century although all of them now are just replicas.Charels Bridge...

The Giant's Mountains and a Rock(y) Mayor

by Kakapo2

A region in the Czech Republic I absolutely love the "Giant's Mountains" = Krkonose (with accent on the s/š), with the highest peak (Snezka/again with accent on the z) at about 1600 metres. It is fabulous for hiking, there are spa towns dotted in the valleys. And in the mountains there are many big buildings (bouda) where you can eat and stay. The most famous one is the Lucní bouda, and one at Snezka (Schronisko na Sniezce) which BTW is right at the Polish border. It is a national park: Krkonošský národní park (KRNAP). The mountains are also great for skiing (Špindleruv Mlýn, Harrachov) - but of course, this does not apply to the time of your stay. From Prague you would travel to Trutnov, and from there to - best - Pec pod Snežkou, Vrchlabí or the already mentioned ski resorts, take a lift up the hills or walk from the bottom. You can also walk to the spring of the river Elbe (Labe) from...

Krkonoše Mountains

by Veroali

Krkonose mountains are the highest mountains in the Czech republic. The highest mountain is Snezka, 1602 m, so it is not so high :-) It is located in the north of Czechia, border upon Polland. In winter it is the most attractive alpine resort due to a lot of ski slopes and good conditions for ski runners. But it is lovely also in summer for tourists. Some Alpine Resorts : Spindleruv Mlyn, Pec pod Snezkou, Janske Lazne, Herlikovice, Harrachov. Some tips : Vrchlabi - The Augustian monastery, Vrchlabi castle Harrachov - a lot of touristic paths Jilemnice - Jilemnice castle Janeske Lazne - spaand many others. The man in the photo is Krakonos, the mountains keeper. First he was described as a bad man, protecting Krkonose and when he was in bad mood, he sent bad weather to Krkonose. But after some time, Czechs changed him as a good man and everybody loves him. Especially children, the...

Karlstejn Castle, Karlstejn

by hopang

Karlstejn Castle is located approximately 25 kilometres south west of Prague, the capital of Czech Republic. It is one of the most beautiful castles in the Czech Republic. The castle was built in 1365 under reign of Roman Emperor Charles IV. Today it is one of the most visited castles in the country attracting millions of foreign tourists from all over the world every year. Karlstejn Castle is located on top of a hill overlooking Berounka River. The best way to travel to Karlstejn Castle is by train which runs every 60 minutes to the town of Karlstejn from Central Prague.

Brno

by Robmj

Brno is a complete surprise. It is a reasonably large city (well for New Zealanders anyway!) of 370,000 people and I was thinking it was just a stop point but there are many historic and beautiful buildings and a great atmosphere and lively scene of cafes, bars and shops. We only stayed overnight, but you could easily spend a few days here taking it all in. On the night we found a sensational historic restaurant (medieval dating from 1248), can't recall name of it, but no doubt all the local hotels and guesthouses can identify and recommend it. Serving wench's, knight and sword fights and a few fine tankards of ale!

Prague

by Robmj

Its a waste of time writing a tip about Prague in detail, as people coming to the Czech Republic will have Prague as a priority.Ignore and avoid the hordes of pissed pommie's on beer weekends and explore, its outstanding. The Town Square, Charles Bridge, Prague Castle, St Vitus Cathedral are just some of the many attractions. You'll need several days here as a minimum. While here, quaff the splendid Czech beers like the're going out of fashion and eat the excellent local foods. Enjoy, its hard to find a better city than Prague.

Town of Telc

by Robmj

Am amazing medieval town with fish ponds, beautiful town square and tons of renaissance and gothic buildings. A real stunner. A great variety of shops and cafes protrude from around the town square. A good place to find Bohemian crystal which was very cheap and superb quality. The town is a UNESCO world heritage site.
