Prazsky Brad - Prague Castle

by JREllison

Prague Castle dates back into the 860s when early christians Chyril and Methodius entered what is now the Czech Republic. In 870s AD the Prince Borivoj started the building the original Castle out of timber and soil. In the 18th century Empress Maria Theresa had the Castle buildings rebuilt in the current Baroque style. Today the Prague Castle is the center of a democratic government and the official residence of the president of the Republic.

Cesky Sternberk

by mbsimjam

One of the most hulking and formidable looking castles in the land is Cesky Sternberk. It lies in the lush area of South Bohemia about 45 km from Prague. It was built in 1240 and is one of the best preserved castles in the land from that time, athough it was destroyed by Jiri of Podebrady in the 15th century and then rebuilt. It holds the private collections of the noble Sternberk family, including treasures from the Thirty Years War and is a great day trip for anyone looking to find what is outside of Prague and learn more of what makes this land so amazing and full of history.

Konopiste Castle

by mbsimjam

Konopiste Castle (pronounced kono-peesh-tyeh) is located just outside the town of Benesov, which is a 1/2 hr train ride from Prague's main train station. It is the summer home of (the original) Franz Ferdinand, who was heir to the Austrian Habsburg Throne near the end of the Habsburg rule. In fact, his death is said to have triggered the start of WWI. Franz was an avid hunter...to say the least. There are TONS of mounted heads on the walls all over the castle. Even if you are not interested in seeing yet another castle, the tour is worth it just to see this spectacle. It also has a shooting gallery, with antique practise machines built specifically for Franz Ferdinand himself. Along with that is an amazing garden and the surrounding forest, which was also built specifically for him (along with all the imported animals for his hunting pleasure). While you are there, check out the wild game...
