The Night Train

by cwest03

Not all trains are the same. I found that out recently when my girlfriend and I tried to sleep on the night train from Munich to Prague. The train left the Munich station at about 23:30 and we were on our way. I had picked up some beers and we had even considered playing some cards before bed. We checked into our cabin and it wasn't what I had remembered double cabins to look like. This one was not as nice and inviting as the cabins on the train that I took from Venice to Paris (a French train). I had forgotten that not all trains are the same and Czech trains were not as nice as the French trains. In addition to being a bit older than some other trains this one stopped quite a bit to add and remove cars along the way. I think a some point we even switched engines. As we made our way to Prague the train rocked back and forth and creaked a lot which made it kind of hard to sleep. I don't...

How to travel around the Czech republic

by Zuzka

Bus and train are very common public transport means. Sometimes not easy (Czech language), not luxurious at all, but relativly cheap and reliable.Timetable information: www.idos.cz (bus, train - incl. international).International buses: Eurolines - www.bei.czMaps on-line: www.atlas.mapy.cz or www.mapy.cz.See also Transport section on my Prague page.

Watch out for cars and taxis!

by FinElina

Cars (or their drivers) drive extremely quickly and fast in Czech Republic. So moving around by bike can be dangerous if you don't know the local transportation system. Taxi-drivers can be a tourist trap. If you don't agree with the price before the trip, the drivers usually charge high prices (no matter if the trip is 200 meters or 2000 meters long)... Better to go by walking or public transportation! (still be aware of thieves!)

For breclav fly to Vienna

by diamond7

If you want going to Breclav don't fly to Prague, the czech capital. You may fly to Vienna or to Bratislava as the train takes you only in 1 hour in Breclav, from any of these 2 cities. But if you are flying to Prague you will take at least 3.30 hours..

Trains and footpower

by reon80

Getting into the Czech Republic and between major cities is best done on the train: cheap, relatively quick, and relatively frequent trains are pretty much the only way to go. Sometimes literally. However, in Prague, I think the best thing to do is walk. While the city has a very efficient Metro and Tram, everything is so compact that you'll miss things if you keep popping underground or are paying attention to find a Tram stop. So walk...and if you get lost, just find the river!

many options but love a car for freedome

by richiecdisc

Driving around is surprisingly easy with very little traffic. You can stop and eat in little local pubs on the way and stop to take photos that you would otherwise miss. I traveled via train and bus and found both great and easy enough to figure out despite the language barrier. They are both very inexpensive by western European standards.

Getting to and from Czech Republic by train

by mbsimjam

If you are going to the Czech Republic by train, or leaving to another country by train, and want to save some dosh, do the following: purchase a ticket to the border town and then another ticket from the border town to your destination. By doing this you will save a considerable amount of money as czech domestic rail prices are ridiculously lower than international prices that you would be charged if you buy straight from (eg.) Prague. It may, however, cause a slight delay in your travelling as you wait for the connecting train.

Depends on whether you come from whet we define as 'Eastern Europe' and 'Western Europe'Western Europe: Going by Eurolines is definately the cheapest way to get to Prague, as train fares in Europe tend to be very expensive. If you have a rail pass you don't have to bother, of course.Eastern Europe: By train. Train travel is always more comfortable and more fun than bus travel, and if you are coming from a former communist country fares will be inexpensive.By train. Fares are cheap and the trains are comfortable.

The trains throughout the Czech Republic are excellent and cheap. Secondary routes through the countryside that connect to smaller towns can be pretty slow and tend to make frequent stops. This does, however, give you a chance to get up close and personal with the locals, which in the summertime can be a pretty 'ripe' experience. If this happens, just go out into the aisle and hang your head out the window and watch the scenery go by.
