by sweetea79

I took a 15 hour train from the Netherlands to Prague... I know 15 hours seems like a long time, but it was actually quite pleasant. I would highly recommend a visit regardless of how you get there. The most affordable and best way to see every little corner of the city is to WALK! It is too beautiful to drive through.

by iandsmith

Train from Germany down the Elbe is a nice trip. Just hope that your Czech train doesn't break down like mine did.I can wholly recommend the trams. Like trams everywhere that I have been on they are easy to get, quick and get you where you want to go. It sure beat the ride in the bus from the airport where we were sardined in and I, being last, was stuck on the exit step. Not recommended for claustrophobics.

You can come to the Czech Republic by all kinds of transportation. When you're coming by the car or bus you'll find highly developed net of roads, when you're coming by train you'll see that almost every village has its own train station. Czech Republic has one international airport which is placed in Prague (Prague-Ruzyne International Airport). Brno, Ostrava and Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad) have airport too. Prague has actually two airports but the second one (Kbely Airport) is used by army and for intersate flights. When you travel by the car or bus you'll find more than 500 kilometers of freeways. The most important one is from Prague to Brno and further to Slovakia. Another one is from Czech border with Germany on the south-west through Pilsen to Prague. There is also a freeway from north (from Germany) through Usti nad Labem to Prague and from Liberec to Prague. On the east there is only...

When you are using your own car and using a freeway you'll need a Freeway Card (little sticker on the front window) which you can buy on the border, post office or almost on every gas station. When you are caught without the card you have to pay 5 000 Kc fine.Prices: for one year - less than 3.5 q = 800 Kc (passenger car, motorcycle); between 3.5 q and 12 q = 6 000 Kc (minivan, bus); more than 12 q = 12 000 Kc (truck, big bus). for one month - less than 3.5 q = 200 Kc; between 3.5 q and 12 q = 800 Kc; more than 12 q = 1 600 Kc. for ten days - less than 3.5 q = 100 Kc; between 3.5 q and 12 q = 300 Kc; more than 12 q = 600 Kc.

by cynthi

I took the train from Ansbach (where I was living) to Nuernberg, then Marktredwitz in Germany, crossed the border on another train to get to Cheb, and then on to Prauge. My advice... Wait until you are in the Czech republic to buy your tickets for travel within the Czech republic. We bought tickets in Germany to go there, and tickets to go back home in Prauge, and they were half the price inside of the Czech Republic.Pic: Me and my friend Brit the first few minutes we were in the Czech Republic, in Cheb.We took the subways and streetcars to get everywhere. You can buy a weekend pass for 200 Kc, which is really a ripoff, because a 20 minute subway ride in Prauge only costs 12 Kc (of course we found this out later).IMPORTANT NOTE: if you must take a taxi (i.e. you are hopelessly lost), make sure to negotiate the price before you start going, if the taxi doesn't have a meter. Otherwise, you...

There are different ways to get there: by car, by train, by plane or by boat (on the rivers Elbe and Moldau). By boat isn't handy coz of the amount of time it costs. By car is nice if there're two of you (so you can drive in shifts). Take the Autobahn to Nürnberg and from there follow the signs 'Pilsen / Plžen'. Cross the German-Czech border. In Plžen, follow the signs for 'Praha'.By train from Dresden is a route with beautiful scenery. After Dresden, the train follows the river Elbe. The train moves through the Elbe valley, while below the river flows. Above the train are lots of castles. The view is spectacular! In Prague, us the tram or metro system. Outside of Prague is car territory.

A word of warning about crossing borders if you are by car: we were sent back from a couple of borders because of my Swiss passport: basically get some info beforehand, if possible, about which borders are open to international citizens. It'll save you a long drive trying to find a place to reenter (or enter) Poland.

by Svetobeznik

Karlovy Vary is easily accessible by bus, air from Prague or by car - 120 kilometres west of Prague, 315 kilometres from Berlin, 415 kilometres from Vienna. NATIONAL TRANSPORT There is an extensive, efficient and very cheap bus and train network. Buses are generally the faster and cheaper than trains.TRAIN:The common means of transport for long distances. EC(Euro City supplement 60kc), IC (Inter City, 30kc) & Espresny (Express) trains require/can make a reservation(20kc). Rychlik are fast direct trains, Osobny - ordinary trains stops at every station. You should buy a ticket at a ticket counter, it may be possible to buy on the train but the ticket will cost more. The sign 'R inside a box' means that a seat reservation is compulsory on, 20kc, that train. International tickets are often sold at separate counters.Student discounts: Foreigners don't qualify for National services.Bus:Many...
