If you're going by car from Warsaw to Prague there are two ways. If you like sightseeing, after Wroclaw take the road thru Jelenia Gora - there are gorgeous Krkonosce mountains. The other road is thru Klodzko and gives you faster motorway.

I arrived in the Czech Republic by private motor car. We travelled from Vienna, Austria to the Mikulov border crossing. At the crossing were a lot of trucks all parked. I asked my Czech hosts why the trucks were there. They said that they can not travel on the Czech roads during certain hours and the weekend and they are waiting for Monday morning to travel again.

If you live in North America the best and easiest way to get there is to Fly to Prague. Prague´s airport is not very big, there for you can not get lost. And taxis, shuttles or urban buses can take you to town wich is about 20 km (12 or 14 miles) from the airportThe best way to go around the country is by bus, but if you speak no czech (like almost everybody) then trains are for you, the reason is because ub train stations somebody will some English or German (in mayor cities) and almost nobody will be at the bus station, much less speak English.

Any way you want. By train, plane or car. At the airport watch out of taxi drivers, they will charge you too much, if they find out, you are not native. Around the country, best bet - rent a car. In Prague, it would be best and fastest to use bus, tram or subway. With a car, you might have trouble finding parking.

Plane, car or Train.

The trams and Metro are VERY cheap. Pre-buy tickets (most of the instructions are multi-lingual) either individually or in packs at Metro Stations and all tabaconists and stamp on entry to either Metro Station or a Tram. Cost is VERY low. Only 25-30 US Cents for a 'short Journey' which is upto 4 Metro/tram (can be combined) stops within 30-60 minutes of stamping ticket (depends on time/day as you get longer off-peak when trains less frequent). For 'long-Haul' (e.g. trips-out), trains are simillarly priced.

We purchased our tickets in the USA before we left for Europe for all of our train trips. Since we had lodging reservations already set up, this worked out well for us since we didn't have to wait in line to buy tickets and we had all our connection information in hand. All we had to do was point to our destination on a piece of paper and the train attendant guy in the red hat would point us in the direction of the correct train. The first class tickets in the Czech Republic were very economical. Our first class trip from Nurnberg to Prague cost about $43 per person USD.This is a scan of our train ticket.

Using your car and travelling around Czech republic, you will most likely need to pay a highway fee. For personal cars you can get either 10days ticket for 100CZK ($3) or 1year ticket for 800CZK ($24). If you do not buy the ticket and the police will control you (usually on exits from highways) you can get a fee from 500 up to 2000CZK ($13-$55). However, the police is not always there, so it's juts up to you whether you want to risk it or not.

BUS - TRAIN ...

by nikolka

BUS - TRAIN Czech buses and trains are worth a story! You would not find them comfortable or clean or even fast... It is not good, but it is true so you should know it. If you can afford it, it is better to rent a car (go for known rental companies like Hertz or Eurocars, Czech ones might be good but hard to contact - well, maybe one day I will find the info for you and you will find it here afterwards;)). If you cannot afford renting a car, see the positives and negatives about each transportation mode: BUS is faster, it goes to smaller destinations as wellbut it is dirty and smells and there is no space for legs and you have to pay extra fee for extra luggage. TRAIN is relatively cheap especially when you get discount as a family, a group, a student... it has enough space, it is reliable and no traffic jams but they are always dirty (especially toilletes) and slow. For information...

by dnwitte

We entered the Republic by train via Furth im Wald and left via Kralupy na Vltavou and Usti Nad Labem. The latter (Which takes you on to Dresden and Leipzig) is a gorgeous ride along a river valley lined with cliffs and castles and cute villages. We travelled only by train. The trains tended to be rather crowded but were prompt and comfortable. Make reservations for long journeys.
