    railway bridge downstream from Decin

Favorite thing: Decin has a lot of bridges as it is typical for a city on a major river. Several bridges span the Elbe/Labe river but the oldest bridges span the small rivers that flow into the Elbe/Labe. The Old Town bridge (see Things To Do tip) spans the Ploucnice (Polzen) river on the right bank and was built in 1574. Even some years older is the bridge from 1561 over the Jilova river (Eulaubach) in Podmokly on the left bank (no picture, sorry).

While these smaller bridges are in rather remote locations and harder to find you will notice the larger bridges that span the Elbe/Labe river right away: The Tyrs bridge below Pastyrska stena rock, the two iron framework railway bridges and the (ugly) modern, sort of highway, bridge for car traffic upstream. The best view of those bridges is from Pastyrska stena (see pictures).

Favorite thing: Decin has many buildings in Art Nouveau and Art Deco style. Especially Podmokly (Bodenbach), the district on the left bank of the Elbe/Labe river, has numerous buildings of those styles with very beautiful details. The pictures show examples from Podmokly - you can see some from right bank Decin in a travelogue.

In 1851 Bodenbach - as was its name back then - became a stop at the railway route between Dresden and Prague which proved to be a key point for the industrial development of the town in the late 19th and early 20th century. The town grew, townhouses were built in modern styles - Art Nouveau and later Art Deco.

Just walk through the district vis-a-vis from the main train station, you cannot miss the most beautiful examples of townhouses.
