  • Zamek Decin - the castle of Decin

    Decin Things to Do

Zamek Decin - the castle of DecinHigh above the town of Decin / Tetschen the castle was built on top of a massive rock in 1790 by count Thun-Hohenstein. One of the best attractions of the castle is the rosary, built on a rather narrow, but long rock, decorated with plenty of sandstone-sculptures. Decin / Tetschen has about 55000 inhabitans now and...

  • Decin castle - the loggia of the rosary

    Decin Things to Do

At the south-end of the rosary you will see this stairs going up to a loggia with a better view into the landscape.Obviously it was also used for festivities or simply a cosy place to relax and great sandstone-sculptures add a lot to the atmosphere. When you have been in Salzburg already and had visited the Residenz and Hellbrunn palace there, you...

    Decin Things to Do

In Decin castle there is a small hall at the entrance to the rosary. This hall is totally empty, but all the walls and the ceiling are covered by great frescos, reminding me a lot of baroque frescos in Italy.- what a great place to dance and what a lovely place to have a ball, with a great view of the rosary and the surrounding mountains and all of...

  • Teplice - my tour of the public schools

    Teplice Off The Beaten Path

The weather was a perfect 10 on the April day that I toured the northern Bohemian spa city of Teplice. I was drinking a cold Budvar pivo ( beer ) while also drinking in the fascinating sites, when all of a sudden I found myself standing in front of a large and magnificent school building completely surrounded by young healthy looking students. The...

    Teplice Off The Beaten Path

This church is located in the zamek ( chateau ) area of Teplice. The simple architecture is a refreshing break from that of most churches in the area. No dizzying spires and no gargoyles; just simple but pleasant designs. The church is commonly known as the castle church because of its location at the castle or chateau complex. The church is not...

  • CHURCH OF ST. JOHN OF NEPOMUK

    Hrensko Things to Do

After passing through the markets, I came out in a square where the Church of St. John of Nepomuk was standing. Out the front stood the statue of St. John. The Church was built between 1786-87 in late Baroque style with a wooden bell tower, on the orders of Emperor Joseph II who stopped here in 1779 while taking a trip to Decín. It was painted pink...

There are a few different ways of reaching Hrensko. We came by car, so upon reaching Hrensko, we had to find a carpark. There were a couple, one was behind the "Klepac" restaurant, [fee] and the other was near the "Mezní Louka" hotel, both of which are starting points for trips to Pravèická Brána (parking is not permitted anywhere else except at...

Litomerice was on our way to Dresden in Germany. If you don't wish to move on, then Litomerice is quite a good base to see some of the surrounding towns.Terezin is one, the town where horrific war crimes took place.Just 40kms from Litomerice, it the city of Teplice, which is a Spa Town. Litomerice Favorites

I love exploring a town like Litomerice! I have found the Czech Republic to have wonderful brightly painted buildings, some plain although the most are a bit fancy, some with quite a lot of stucco work which I find attractive.I walked around the old town centre, quite easy to do and you really can't get lost.I love old doors and archways, and here...

One of the buildings on Cathedral Hill, is the Baroque palace of Chapter's Consistory, built by the same Italian architect who built many buildings in Litomerice. This one, was built between the years 1735-1738, originally to be used as a seminary, but later as a Chapter's Consistory. The Palace's facade is richly decorated with lots of stucco...

  • Gothic portal

Usti nad Labem Off The Beaten Path

I always go to the Tourist Information to grab some flyers and get information. Their office in Usti is right on Namesti Miru, the main square in the city centre, in a modern building. When I walked inside I saw this medieval looking structure in the middle of the large hall (pic 1). Turns out it is the relic of a portal, leading to stairs from the...

    Loket Restaurants

The location of the Loket castle is jawdropping, and transports you back to the 13th century when it was first constructed (although there have been considerable additions since then).I visited because the castle was the venue for our conference dinner, which was a medieval banquet.
