(This risk is most relevant in Prague, but could potentially apply in some other Czech cities as well)Taxis! Unfortunately, there are plenty of dishonest taxi drivers in Prague. The best general advice is to never pick a taxi that stands still in the street somewhere waiting for a customer (if they just sit and wait, they are likely the ones that make up for infrequent customers by ripping off the ones they do get). Instead, always pick one of them that cruises by you in the street with their sign lighted up. Always make sure that the meter is started when you roll away, and check that the price isn't ticking away too rapidly. Depending on the length of your trip, a downtown ride should never cost more than, say, 80-200 Czech crowns, otherwise you are being ripped off.

Pay attention when exchanging money!

by aliante1981

Exchange buros often publish attractive rates but do not mention commissions. And many tourists forget to check the point before actually changing cash. So never forget to ask the person behind the counter what the commission fee will be.

People will approach you with offers of accommodation when you first arrive. We actually went to a place that a man showed us pictures of at the train station. He had plenty of I.D., was a doctor, and charged only £15 B&B. A lot of the offers were very shady indeed! Be very careful who you trust in this situation. The main train station is crowded in summer months, and although there is a police presence, beware of pick-pockets and other assorted low lives that will beg or try to sell you something.Don't flash your wealth around, remember this is a poor country and what you make in a month could well be more than an annual salary for some! Not only will this make you a target for personal crime, it won't endear you to honest hard working locals either.

Czech Republic has very low rate of crime, but it doesn't mean that it's no crime there. As in every other country, Czech Republic has burglars, pocket thieves (especially in tourist destinations) and cheaters. In case of any problem call 155 (police).

by Svetobeznik

CRIME INFORMATION: The Czech Republic has a low rate of violent crime. However, there has been a dramatic increase in street crime, particularly pickpocketing, especially in major tourist areas in Prague and on public transportation. Visitors should be alert to the potential for substantial overcharging by taxis, particularly in areas frequented by tourists. The loss or theft abroad of a passport should be reported immediately to the local police and to your nearest embassy or consulate.

Be very careful when parking outside of a designated parking area, i.e. side of the road, etc. I spent a day shopping with 3 friends. We had left our car on the side of the road and needed to do a U-Turn to leave. We were at once pulled over and made to follow the officer to a hotel. Why? She didn't want our Marks or Dollars, she wanted Czech Koruna. The ticket cost us all of $10, but it was a hassle to follow her, exchange the money, and find our way back to the border. Just be careful!

by Athos_13

Czech trains are not the quick, efficient, and punctual type you find in much of Europe. Many of the routes are single track, so delays, as your train waits for the single track to clear are common. These pauses in an otherwise slow journey can last from 15 minutes to over an hour. The trains, however, are fairly affordable, if not somewhat spartan.

The biggest problem I had in the Czech Rep. is with taxis in Prague (don´t take one unless you speek good Czech). Taxi drivers will give you 'special care' and you will PAY extra if you don´t ask them to use the midder or ask in advance how much will it cost.

This goes for every foreign country. Learn basic phrases and definitely learn local laws. Specially if you do not speak the native language perfectly and you can be picked out of a crowd as a tourist. For the cooking, some people cannot handle caraway seeds this country's cooking is famous for. Trust me, I tried my native food on my husband and he cannot handle it. The beer is strong for a foreigner, specially one coming from United States.
