Himmelbjerget is one of the most popular destinations on Jutland, famous for the beauty of the natural surroundings and being the highest point in Denmark. Himmelbjerget refers to the mountain or hill itself which rises to approximately 149 meters at its zenith and overlooks the beautiful Lake Jul - So in the Danish Lake District. This is the grandest view on the mountain. Himmelbjerget was said to have been formed by glacier movement during the Ice Age, and therefore is not a "genuine" hill/mountain but this does nothing to diminish its appeal. Himmelbjerget is also famous for being the site where the Himmelbjerg Tower was erected, as well as The Rostrum on its peak and the many monuments devoted to revered people and even one to womens' right to vote which are scattered around the hillside. It was on Himmelbjerget that King Frederik VII gave the Danish people a constitution in 1849. On lower part of the mountain you will find a hotel, restaurant and cafeteria, snack vendors, gift shops and amusements for children. The fairly easy hikes up and around the mountain make this a very pleasant way to spend an afternoon. This park-like area has no admission fee. Himmelbjerget is open from Palm Sunday to April 30 on weekends and holidays only from 10 am to 5pm. May - June Open everyday from 10am to 7pm; July - Open everyday 10am - 7pm August - September 15 Open everyday 10am to 6pm Fall days and hours vary and opening hours may vary at anytime of year based on weather conditions. Part of our tour in and around Arhus included a ride on a vintage train in Bryup, a small town close to the center of Jutland. The steam train is made up of vintage rail cars pulled by a lovingly-maintained locomotive which rolled down the tracks to meet us in an impressive fashion. The locomotive was spouting steam and the steam whistle was blowing, which obviously struck great joy in the hearts of "Train Spotters" who take great pleasure in photographing old engines. This train has been lovingly preserved, and delights folks on a daily basis and does more than just sit on display in a museum. I have to say that the 5 km ride was way too short for me and the track bed was a little uneven in places giving us some exciting moments, but the ride and the scenery were quite pleasant. The train clickitty-clacked along the track until we came upon the small, old train station called Vrads Station. We were allowed to step off the train for about 20 minutes. There was a little store which sold bottled drinks, beer, and packaged ice cream, and a few postcards and such. Next door was a little eatery which served meals and tea, coffee, etc. Someone was clattering around in the little kitchen who we could not see. It was a cute little place and it was too bad we didn't have time for a little tea. Then it was back on the train for the return journey. We passed deep stands of evergreen trees and little ponds with ducks. The steam from the locomotive engine drifted back past our train cars which put me in an Agatha Christy kind of mood. Prices for the train ride are about 34 Dkk for adults and 17 Dkk for children under 12. It's a small price to pay to preserve this beautiful piece of locomotive history. Leave a Comment

Without meaning to be morbid, one of the most amazing museum exhibits I've ever seen is "TOLLUND MAN" and "ELLING WOMAN" and I don't think I'll ever forget it. This exhibit is the most well-known attraction of the Silkeborg Museum where it is on display. "Tollund Man" is the well- preserved body of a man from the Middle Ages who was discovered in 1950 in the Bjaeldskovdal peat bog near Silkeborg in the Village of Tollund. Brothers Emil and Viggo Hojgard discovered the body on their farm. The body was so well preserved that police were called to the scene thinking it might have been a recent murder!! Now it is known that it was the bog acid found in peat bogs that has a tanning effect (such as in leather), which preserved Tollund Man in such excellent form. "Bog bodies" had already been found in the late 1920's and late 1930's. But apparently this particular man was more well preserved, and the way in which he died was also very significant. Tollund Man, thought to have been about 40 years old at the time of his death, died by hanging around 350 B.C., was put to rest and remained in the bog for about 2,200 years before being found. Notice the braided rope around his neck. Although the whole body was found, the museum decided to save only significant portions of the body though I'm not sure why. There has been much speculation as to why Tollund Man had been hung and buried in the peat bog when it was generally the custom of the time to be cremated--were the small-statured man & woman a sacrifice to the gods?? The body was put to rest with great care although the braided leather rope was left around his neck. He was found on his side, almost cradled. Perhaps someone he knew laid him to rest. (Click on the picture to see the oddly peaceful expression of Tollund Man who was clean shaven (although there is whiskar stubble) with short hair and the leather cap which remained on his head.) Den Gamle By means "the old town" and it is an open-air-museum of old farmhouses that were taken from all parts of Danmark and they were re-constructed in this museum again, forming a small village of its own, including all the facilities of a town : a river runs through it, you may see ducks and geese in the street and in the ponds. Employees, dressed in old costumes , will show you, what life was like hundreds of years ago. Everything is so peacful in this part of Arhus, although the "real life" with all of its noises of cars etc. is just a few meters away. But this museum is surrounded partly by walls, partly by bushes and trees, so you never have a chance to see a shine of the reality , when walking through "Den Gammle By" Leave a Comment Address: DK-8000 Århus C - Viborgvej 2Phone: +45 86 12 31 88Directions: Follow one of the many sign-post for "Gamle By", so you will not miss it. It is close to the ringroad and not far from the port.Website: http://www.dengamleby.dk/ Other Contact: Fax +45 86 76 06 87

Close to Arhus is the royal palace, where the family of the Danish Queen normally spends the summertime. For that reason you may often see the royal danish yacht at a seperate quai in the port of Arhus, guarded by 2 soldiers day and night. You may approach the ship a bit anyway and take some pictures. It is a pity,my pics are quite dark, these pics are slides and lost a lot of their quality , when I scaned them. You may see the crown anyway in the forward-part of the ship. The royal yacht was built in 1931 and has a length of 78,4 meters, 10,40 meters wide and has 1238 GRT the range is 3600 nautical miles. Top-speed is 13,5 knots. Leave a Comment Directions: The royal yacht may be seen docked in the ordinary port of Arhus, quite close to the entrance-gate, where cars may enter the port. That dock is used by other ships, when the royal yacht is not there.

Elling Woman by starship Again, information on this exhibit is not meant to be morbid. Elling Woman was actually discovered about 12 years prior to Tollund Man in 1938, but found less than 100 m from Tollund Man. A braided-leather rope was also found around her neck indicating she also had been hung---but for what, also a sacrifice to the gods?? We may never know. It is known that she lived roughly in the same time period as Tollund Man. Elling Woman had a distinctive, braided hair design, which has been diagrammed. But the rest of her does not appear to be as well preserved as Tollund Man although some pieces of clothing also remained. This is a shame because it would be interesting to see if the expression on her face (if as well preserved as Tollund Man's) would give any clues as to what actually transpired at her death. In the accompanying picture, you will see what look like boxes near the remains of Elling Woman--they are actually mounts for artifacts possibly found with Elling Woman. I think I remember that there was some kind of hair pin or ornament there. If so, I would think this would indicate a certain "status" -- wealth or family ties. Wooden Shoes Craftshop - courtesy of museum by starship We didn't have time to stop here, but I would have really liked to see this unsual and interesting museum! This museum is rather a conglomeration of displays, exhibits and craftsmen. Video can be seen on exhibits and local history, but the films are only in Danish. The Gl. Rye Mill which was built in 1872 and is considered a "Dutch Gallery" or "cap" mill. An entrepreneurial innkeeper named Jens Petersen tok advantage of central Jutland's inland winds and built this mill to grind farme'rs corn, a portion of which he would keep to be his payment. After the turn of the century, a sawmill was added to the property, then a diesel motor was installed to supplement power, and even today the mill is still operational. However, the last miller, Thorvald Jensen, died in 1990. I have always associated wooden shoes with Holland, but Ry, Denmark, became quite a center of wooden shoe production itself. The area was not suited to many agricultural crop farming but there were good supplies of timber. In the late 1700's, a group of farmers embarked upon "mass production" of wooden shoes to supplement their income and wooden-shoemakers earned much more than day laborers. In the Wooden Shoe Museum you can watch craftsmen fashioning wooden shoes with the tools used from those early days of production. Interesting facts: each shoemaker had his own symbol which he engraved on the instep of each shoe!! Newly made wooden shoes had to be "smoked" in a chimney to prevent the fresh wood from cracking as it dried out! A good shoemaker could produce on average 5 pairs of shoes per day and earn twice what a day laborer could! When copy milling machines were introduced, 18 men could produce the same amount of shoes as it used to take 60 men! Admission to the museum is 20 DKK for individual adults; 5 DKK less if groups of 10 or more. Children are 5 DKK. Guided tours available at extra charge. The Museum is open from May to September, Tuesday - Sunday --10am to 5 pm Open on Mondays during School Holidays (summer?) Leave a Comment Address: Mollestien 5, Gl. Åboulevarden in Århus by globetrott This small river-canal ends in the port of Arhus and along of it you may see plenty of great (and expensive) shops, cafes and restaurants. This is the favorite boulevard for the local people and it is also beautifully lighted at night. Live music-performances will take place there in summertime and you may listen to street musicians at many places along the canal. Don't miss this great area !! Search for Åboulevarden on your Arhus-city-map ! Leave a Comment Address: Århus - ÅboulevardenDirections: That river-canal ends at the port of Arhus and passes by "Den Gammle By" , maybe that small river is even part of the water-stystemof the museum.

The Botanical garden of Arhus is next to the museum-village "Den Gamle By" and the horse-carriage, that takes you for a journey through Den Gammle By will also take you through a part of the botanical gardens, next to it. Another attraction next to the openair-museum is the old wooden Windmill, high above the museum and outside of its walls. During the day you may walk through the museum ONLY, when you pay the entrance-fee, BUT then also the houses are open and the staff in their traditional costumes will be walking around, and you may watch the craftsmen producing their goods in the traditional way. In the early morning and late in the evening you may walk through the museum without paying an entrance-fee, but of course you may see everything just from the streets, as the buildings will be locked.
