Vestermarie Church is a neo-Romanesque church in granite, that replaced replaced in 1885, a medieval Maria Church. From this time are the pulpit and the altarpiece.

In the churchyard there are 6 rune stones from the 11th century.

In the island of Bornholm, this nice small town of Aakirkeby is not a must see, but if you pass there there's no reason to skip it: a small brake in your trip allows a quick visit to a calm place, with historic relevancy.

    Hammerknuden

    by Andreja86 Updated Feb 21, 2011

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Hammerknuden is in connection with the old ruin Hammershus and Hammer Habor.

The "main" entrance is just next to Sandvig Camping Area where can walk in two different directions.
One of them leads you to the most northern part of Bornholm. This is a beautiful walk and takes only 15 minutes. You will see the the water hits the rocks and is very impressive. You will also meet an old lighthouse. This 15 minutes trip is easy and if you have trouble walking you should take this short trip and then just return when you reach the lighthouse.

It you turn east you will walk across the peninsula and reach the ruins of Salomons chapel. This itself is not a destination but you should afterwards turn north (towards the other route) or south (towards Hammer lake and Hammershus). I have never tried to turn north but the southern trip is quite demanding and trouble walking people should not take this turn.

It is also possible just to walk north from the start and then just continue until you make a southern turn and reach Hammer habor. This trip takes 3 hours.

Just outside Rønne there is a great granite-quarry.
On the road fron Rønne to Aarsballe you can find it on your right hand.
2 km outside Rønne turn right to Knudsker.
Here by the church you can park your car.
Walk around the church and then you have a magnifficient view on the granite quarry.

From the little fishing village Melsted lads a footh path to Gudhjem.
Alongside the coast. This small coastpath is crossing Slettens camping, and starts again at the end of the camping-grounds an lead now over the rocks.
Now you have a nice view on the sea and when the weather is good, the islands of Christiansø can be seen.
After a 20 min walk you reach the harbour of Gudhjem.
    Enjoy your smoked hering!

    West coast

Nowhere is off the beaten path on little Bornholm in summer (especially not on the coasts), and here too you will find the odd Swedish and German car, but it is nowhere near the invasions of Allinge, Gudhjem, Svaneke and Dueodde. The west coast area between Hasle and Vagn is gorgeous as this photo from outside Teglekås shows. Here, the forest area between Rønne and Hasle has given way to the northern cliffs but you are still not on top of the cliffs at Jon's Kapell and Hammershus where the tourists gather again. Yes, we really liked this quiet little stretch with only a scattering of houses here and there with gardens climbing on the hills, cliff views and small family smokeries. The weather was only so so when we past it but, this being the west coast, the sunsets must be gorgeous too.

The little fishing hamlets of Helligpeder and Teglkås, are a perfect place to see a nice sunset when the weather is perfect.
The villages are in the shimmer serene.
    Enjoy the silence and beauty.
