Svaneke Things to Do

  • The Harbour

The central area of Svaneke is dominated by its small harbour. The main road passes at its side, and most streets converge to it. Compared to the local standards it has some animation.

  • The 5 sisters

One of the known images of Bornholm are the five chimneys of this smokehouse in Svaneke. It is located in Fiskergade, a little north of the harbour, accessed by secondary streets.

  • Old canons

Near the 5 sisters, a small bank shelters a couple of old canons covering the coast. I don't know from what war or period, but they were a surprise in that plane and accessible place.

  • Svaneke Church

Actually, we never found the time to visit it, which is why I have no picture. However, it has to be mentioned as one of the main sights of the town. It also has a viking rune stone outside for those of you interested in Scandinavian heritage.

  • Oluf Høst House

Although the Høst museum is in Gudhjem, it is in Svaneke that Bornholm's famous painter was born and the house he grew up in is still there to see, even if not open to the public.

  • Windmills

Svaneke's two windmills are famous, but an even better one to visit in my opinion, is the impressive working mill at Aarsdale, 3 kilometres to the south. There you can visit the mill for a small sum and climb all the way to its top - a bit scary on a really windy day! :) The mill gives enough electricity to support the surrounding houses since 1980...

Svaneke Restaurants

  • Brewery dining

Svaneke makes famous Bornholm local beer and it comes in four types, the "Classic" light, a dark "Gold", a stout and a special brew which varies and when we were there was called Sweet Mary and became a favourite (and which we only saw in the brewery itself). In the Bryghus, you can sit next to the copper vats and dine on fish and meat. The meat...

  • Smoked fish

Svaneke's fish smokery is one of the biggest and most famous on Bornholm. If you time it badly, you will end up sharing lunch with a coach load of tourists but whenever you get there, you will at least have a great meal AND see the practice of fish smoking close by as the ovens are right behind the counter where you buy your food. You can eat in or...

Svaneke Transportation

  • By bus

Getting to Svaneke by public transport is easy as you have both the Rønne-Aakirkeby-Svaneke as well as the Rønne-Svaneke-Hammershus bus to chose from. All buses stop in Svaneke's main square. The hub for all activity.

  • Horse tram

From the main square in Svaneke, there are horse trams in summer. They leave when the trams are more or less full so there are no specific departure times but they work from 9.00 to 17.00 and take you for a twenty minute tour of the town. In 2005 this was for a sum of DKK 20 per person.

Several times in Bornholm I made myself the question:

"What do this people for living"?

Well, I think that for most of them the answer is... artwork. Sculpture, ceramic and glass artifacts are everywhere, and in Svaneke it seems to be door after door.

Who will be buying so many things?

The small fishing village of Listed, just west of Svaneke, was one of those where I felt I wanted to stay but we were on our way to Aarsdale to find our pension and just here it started to rain again so we pedalled on, passing a small ancient ship's setting by the sea and joking about all the listed buildings. There was something in the atmosphere here that made me hope I will come back...that and the ad I later saw for lobster plates in the restaurant :)))

Favorite thing: Svaneke's well preserved town centre is a joy to just stroll around as long as you are prepared for very narrow pavements here and there. You can walk around the square taking in the architecture, or from the harbour (picture) with its activities, along the seafront to the smokery.

Fondest memory: Ehum...not strolling at all but in fact the brewery. Oh, and listening to children in Joboland's Luna loop :)))
