Walking around, part 1

by marielexoteria

I got a walking tour of Frederiksberg the day we went to the zoo.The first picture here is Frederiksberg's City Hall. This beautiful red brick building was built between 1942 and 1953. The weekend I was there, there were 2 or 3 couples getting married. We didn't get inside but I understand that there's a tour the first Saturday of every month. The City Hall is located on Smallegade 1-3.After seeing the City Hall from outside, we went to Frederiksberg Gardens and Zoo, and on to Frederiksberg Church (picture #2). The first thing that I was attracted to, oddly enough, is the roof with black, (sort of) tight tiles. The building is from 1734 and it's the oldest church in Frederiksberg. The church is located on Pile Allé 3, sort of in front of one of the entrances to Frederiksberg Gardens.A few steps from the church you'll find of the most pleasant and beautiful streets in all of Copenhagen:...

Sankt Markus kirke, "The church by Forum"

by marielexoteria

As you exit the Forum metro station, turn right and you'll find this big brick church at the end of that street. That's St. Markus kirke. I like seeing how prominent it looks when I'm walking inside the little allé like park in the middle of the street. It definitely stand out from the neighboring buildings, not only because of its size and Romanesque influence, but because of the material it was made of (and I like "simple" brick buildings). The church was built in the 1900's and it's designed by Carl Lendorf. I haven't got in but I will and then I'll have something more to say about it :)

Frederiksberg gardens and castle

by marielexoteria

Frederiksberg gardens is one of the most beautiful gardens I've seen in Denmark. Besides all the trees and open spaces, there's a few interesting buildings in the area, like a Roman style temple. For those wanting to do something other than laying down on the grass and having a picnic (when the weather allows it), there's ducks that you can feed, boats for rent and paths to jog. One of the nicest parts of the gardens is that the elephant house from the Copenhagen zoo is open, so if the elephants are out, you can enjoy seeing them.On the gardens, you'll find Frederiksberg castle, that today is the home of Royal Danish Military Academy. When visiting the gardens, you'll find a sign saying that you're not allowed to: ride a bike in the premises or use a grill.

Copenhagen zoo (with a personal twist)

by marielexoteria

Even tho it's called Copenhagen zoo, it's actually located in Frederiksberg county.Upon entering the premises, one of the things you see is the Eiffel Tower-like Zoo Tower, which you can climb and enjoy views of Copenhagen and Frederiksberg, upon paying 10 DKK.The zoo is a nice place to spend a morning or an afternoon at. For the little ones, there's a few stations where they can get their face painted and they offer pony rides. My favorite part was seeing the tigress play with her cub and seeing this, to me, new cat species called "Caracal". I thought it was a lynx because of the tassels in his (her?) ears.Visiting the zoo has a personal twist for me because I noticed that one of the restaurants serve ecological Dominican coffee, from the town of Jamao. As of Jun 2009, the admission fee for an adult is 130 DKK.

Storm P. Museum

by yooperprof

I love learning new things, about people and ideas I'm unfamiliar with. And so I greatly enjoyed visiting the Storm P. museum, an excellent small collection of objects and artworks associated with the life and creations of one of Denmark's most famous - and characteristic - comic artists. Storm P. had many talents: he was a writer, a painter, an actor - and a general all-around thorn in the side of the powerful and pretentious.Storm P. became famous in the early 20th century as a "carnivalesque" caricaturist and sketch-artist whose work poked fun at the famous and the stodgy in early 20th century Denmark. Like all great satirists, his humor was accompanied by a sympathy for the poor and down-trodden, and a dislike for the rich and respectable. Some aspects of Storm P's humor are particular to his Danish background, and don't really "translate" very well. Other aspects seem to be very...

Frederiksberg Palace Gardens

by yooperprof

Frederiksberg Palace was originally constructed in the early 1700s as a summer residence for the Danish Royal family. It remained in use for about a century, and was particularly associated with King Frederik VI, who enjoyed sailing with his Danish Royal Navy on several of the canals within the park. From 1869, the park has been open to the public, and the palace has been used as the Royal Danish Army Officers Academy.I'm sure you wouldn't confuse Frederiksberg Palace, which is located in the fashionable and hip Kommune of the same name, with Frederiksborg Castle, which is in the Danish town of Hillerød. But perhaps you do know someone who might make that silly mistake!

Smalle Pub - Very Apt!!

by johngayton

If this isn't a Frederiksberg institution it should be. This tiny pub, just up the road from the town hall, is doubly aptly named, being both small and on Smallegade and makes for a perfect drop-in centre for those of us who appreciate a proper bar.I've only dropped in once for a quick lunchtime beer (that turned into 5!!) and immediately felt at home, passing the time of day with the couple of regulars present and Jorgen, our barman of the day - very Hyggelig! Not only a great little pub but at 16DKK for a beer one of the cheapest!Definitely due for a revisit!

Order A Beer Then Order A Beer While Waiting!!

by johngayton

Nope you haven't misread the title! This is the famous Vinstue 90 on Gammel Kongevej which specialises in "SLOW BEER!". The beer here, made by Carlsberg , is meticulously poured to produce a smooth creamy and pleasantly unchilled draught and takes about 20 minutes, its' head resembling one of those "Mr Softy" ice-cream cones that I remember from my childhood - I don't know if they still do these (ooops but that's a digression) but back to the beer: The system here is to order your beers and then also order a bottle of one of their excellent selection of special beers (mostly from local microbreweries) to sip whilst you await the main event. As you can imagine this is a pretty laid-back sort of a bar, friendly staff and locals and definitely well worth a visit, yep a John bar!

The RVAU's Botanical Gardens

by ginte

The Botanical gardens of the Royal Danish Veterinary and Agricultural University (RVAU) were laid out in 1858 - concurrently with the building of the actual university. There are many various flowers, brushes and trees. In spring the garden is in blooms.

Frederiksberg Park

by ginte

Frederiksberg Park is one of Copenhagen's Largest parks. It is about 300-year-old-park and still very famous among Danes. It's full of people every weekend, even during the winter. Great to walk around, to have sun baths or just to have a picnic on the grass:)
