Catch the ferry from near the harbour in Assens. Times are shown on the board. We caught the 10.00 out from Assens and returned on the 15.35. It was DKK70 each return. You can take cars etc but for a day trip it's more fun to hire a bike. The trip takes about 30 minutes.
Take a rain coat and thick clothing because there's no shelter on the boat other than on the car deck.

From the moment you land in Esbjerg to the moment you leave Copenhagen the E20 will be the most constant thing in your life. It makes getting across Denmark really easy and to our surprise it accompanied us to Malmo, then to Gothenburg and when we berthed at Christiansand in Norway on the way home, there, still trundling northward, were signs for the E20.
Leaving the E20, road numbers on yellow backgrounds are for trunk roads which link the provinces and larger towns and for local roads, the lettering has a white background.
The photo shows the E20 leaving Denmark and heading off into the sunset for Sweden.
