This was a most unusual and enjoyable visit to the home of the artist Johannes Larsen (1867 -1961).
He lived during almost exactly the same period as my Grandfather who died two years later.
The home that Larsen established in 1901 has been preserved exactly as it was when he and his family lived there. The extensive grounds - garden and fields down to the site of the old Mill are still tended.. From them views of the town and the Inlet can be seen.
The simplicity of the domestic arrangements was touching and they revealed the artistic contributions of the artist and his wife - also an accomplished painter.
There is something of the Arts and Crafts Movement to be seen in the architecture and furnishings of the home.
Larsen was famous as an illustrator too and an edition of Hans Christian Andersen's Ugly Ducking with Larsen's illustrations, which we bought in the Museum shop, has entranced all our grandchildren.
Within the grounds there is a modern exhibition building with 15 galleries exhibiting, in the permanent collection, much of the Larsen's work and many other painters.
Several special exhibitions are mounted there each year, as well as a series of musical concerts.

Starting out from the Tornoes Hotel you can take a self guided walk with the help of a map and descriptive account from the hotel or the Tourist Office.
Because we stopped off to visit the Larsen Museum where we also had a cup of coffee, spent some time in a book shop - where we bought the most expensive Danish- English Pocket Dictionary in the world ( make sure you work out the exchange rate in your head correctly!) we left ourselves short of time - as well as cash - so rushed by most of the remainder of the walk. Had we had another day we wewould have enjoyed taking a more leisurely stroll round this interesting old town.
