In the 16th century, Christian III extended the fortifications at Nyborg castle by the building of ramparts around the castle. These ramparts were strategically 'forward-placed' defense structures containing cannons to control big areas of surrounding land.
Now the ramparts provide a nice place for a walk.
An interesting part of the fortifications is the town gate. This gate was built in 1666 and was by then the only entrance to Nyborg. It was closed at 10 pm and 5 minutes before that, a special bell at Our Lady Church would ring to indicate the closing of the gate. This bell is still rung each day. Leave a Comment
