Odense Flights

We had a few extra days in Copenhagen and decided to go to Odense. We caught a train from the just under the airport and ran directly to Odense. On the way to Odense we had second class tickets without seat reservations, this proved a bit difficult as the train filled up. Once in Odense we obtained seat assignments for the trip back. The trip took about 90 minutes and the train runs three times an hour. Light refreshments were available for purchase on train, we had coffee.

The train takes you right to the centre of Odense: the Trainmuseum is opposite of the station and from the station to the msuseums of H.C.Andersen you can walk about 15-20 minutes and will see some of the sights already, while walking there.

walk
For those that travel to Odense as a daytrip to Copenhagen you will spend most of your time in the historic center where all the sites/museums/attractions are located. We easily walked anywhere around, from the train station the Town Hall is 5’ away, and most of the museums 10-15’ away.

Bicycle
A nice alternative is to rent a bike, there are some outside the train station, we noticed many visitors doing the same, and of course most of the locals have a bicycle as in any other Danish city. There are many bike lines and it’s perfectly safe to cycle in Odense.

Local buses and taxi
We didn’t use any taxi but we used some local buses. Most of them pass from the train station. The tourist information near the Town Hall provided us with a small guide with all the bus routes and timetables. Although most of the attractions are located in the center you need a bus for places like Funen Village, Iron Age Village etc Some buses have free wi-fi.

The single ticket costs 19DKK, very expensive of course so you better buy from the driver a 24h pass that costs 40DKK.

We preferred to buy the City Pass from the Tourist Info because it includes free entrance to almost every attraction in the city but also unlimited use of local buses for one day. It costs 129DKK but we had 2 full days in Odense so the second day we took advantage of the pass in deep.

Odense located at Funen island(between Sealand and Jutland). It’s about 160km west of Copenhagen

By train:
Visiting Odense from Copenhagen is very easy, it’s just 90’ away by train. Although you can easily find tickets on the train station we booked the ticket online (there are offers –called orange tickets- if you book in advance, we payed 99DKK for a single ticket instead of 250DKK).

We had specific seats on the train, the ride was nice and the last part was under the sea through a tunnel (Odense is located at another island than the capital)
Once in Odense Trainstation you can just walk to the center or hire a bike.

By plane:
Odense Lufthavn(airport) is located 10km away from the center. I don’t know if it’s convenient to use it though, maybe some charter flights to other European cities will do the job because as I already mentioned Copenhagen is 90’ away by train.

It's an easy train ride from Kopenhagen to Odense and it takes about 1.5 hrs.
A single trip costs about 28 euro.
The best tip is to make seat reservations (which you can do up until the train leaves) at the ticket counter. It's definitely worth the small extra cost if you want a seat.

We had a guided tour around Odense but for the most senior one of us, a cycletaxi was arranged.

The price is (2007):
- 20 DKK starting fee (2,70 EURO )
- 3 DKK per minute (0,40 EURO)

The free Odense map shows some 20 parkings right in the center. This is the one at the end of Munkemollestr. that goes underground, with easy access to the department store attached to it. Dead center.

The station is located some 3-4 km from OBC and is located between Odense University Hospital and Odense Zoo. There is a platform and a ticket vending machine. Access to the station from the O2 circular road by taking the stairs.
Trains go to Odense (OBC) and in the direction of Svendborg. No car parking is possible right by the station, but some options exist in the nearby area.

It takes 4 minutes to get to OBC.
