 | Odense Off the Beaten Path | Tips 1 - 10 of 31 | | Popular Off the Beaten Path | Other Off the Beaten Path Tips | All Tips (31) Not far away from the center of the city you'll find a great and idylic place to relax in Odense. This area is known as 'Skovsoen' (the forest lake) or Fruens Boege (the name of the meadow). The lake (which is more like a big pond) and the meadow is parted by a small road and surrounded by a forest that offers two good restaurants - 'Karslund' and 'Restaurant Skoven'. In very cold winters it's possible to go skating on the lake/pond and you are always welcome to feed the ducks, swans and other birds here. The forest is actually a neighbour to Odense Zoo, so you can actually see Zebras walking around from the forest sometimes - there is a fence between of course. Many people use the forest to take a walk, a run or a trip on their bike and during the summer there are outdoor-concerts, outdoor-movies and other things going on at the meadow. The two kiosks in the area are 'famous' for their icecream that is very popular in the summer. The small river Odense A (with a dot above the A) also runs through the forest and it's possible to go fishing here, but it requires a specific 'fishing-card'. Just across the street from the trainstation in Odense, you'll find a place to relax or just to enjoy a short walk. 'Kongens Have' - which means; the kings' garden in danish, is a small park with a walking-path across it, and many people walk through here everyday to get from the trainstation to the center of the city. There is a few scultures/statues here (like the one pictured), and you can find a bench to relax on, and watch the people go by... During the summer-period you can sometimes find free outdoor concerts here, free outdoor cinema and sometimes a tivoli (amusements). Leave a Comment

If you like ice skating and you visit Odense in the winther period (November - Frebruary), you gotta find 'Graabroedre Plads', which is a small square located in the center city - just a two minute walk from the city hall. Here you'll find a small outdoor skating rink where you can take a free skate and enjoy the light from the nearby popular cafes. It's free, but if you don't have your own skates, you have to pay 25 kr. (about 3 Euros) to rent a pair for an hour. The rink is open all seven days a week. On normal days from 12.00 - 21.00 and on weekends from 10.00 - 21.00. The skate-renting closes one hour earlier though! This photo is a bit boring, but you can find a 'night-photo' of the rink in my 'Christmas-photo' album. Leave a Comment

The city hall of Odense is a nice looking buidling and the square named 'Flakhaven' in front of it is often the base for some activities - mostly in the summer period. Here you'll find thousands of flowers during the annual 'flower festival', you can watch boxers or dancers during the annual 'sports night' or enjoy yourself on one of the 'Odense by night' days. The square is naturally also the base for some demonstrations against political subjects throughout the year. In the summer you can sit here and enjoy the sun while you watch the people pass by, and during the Christmas-period you'll find the city's 'official' Christmas-tree here. Visit the listed website to see a live webcam from the city hall square... Leave a Comment

Tranakaer Slot / Tranekaer Palace is a lovely palace on the island Langeland, in a distance of about 45 km from Odense. That palace dates back to the year 1200 and some of the walls are 3 meters thick. You may not enter the palace itself, but take a walk around it in a park see an interesting museum closeby. There is also a restaurant with an interesting interior, because that restaurant was built inside of the old horse-stables. Outside of the village of Tranekaer you may also see a nice windmill, still fully functional and open for tourists. Unfortunately I cannot find my new pics of Tranekaer and may show you just this old one of 1964, it is scanned from a Super-8-film my father had made. Leave a Comment

Bagenkop is a small village in a distance of about 40 km south-east of Odense, at the south-end of the island Langeland. One of the cousins of my mother was living there, and she had invited us to spend some time there in 1964. In the year 2000 I returned there and I think that Bagenkop might also be an interesting place to go for ordinary tourists, who care for lovely landscapes and a quiet vacation. My favorite building was the church, where you may also see a sailing-boat hanging down from the ceiling, in order to get a safe return of the fishermen of Bagenkop. The husband of our relative was one of them, beeing out on the open sea fishing for several weeks, so we actually never met him. Leave a Comment
