 | Odense Things To Do | Tips 1 - 10 of 99 | | Popular Things To Do | Other Things To Do Tips | All Tips (99) The entrance to the museum devoted to H. C. Andersen and his works is at the back of the house he was born in. It was cleverly added to his first home so that you have to cross all its halls to find yourself in the small cottage at the end. It's a completely modern building however and is in stark contrast to the other houses in the area, with which it shares one feature only - the sloping roof. The museum presents the life of the famous writer in the form of frescoes painted by Niels Larsen Stevns in 1932 in the Commemorative Hall to take you later to the little yellow corner house where up to five families dwelt at the same time. You can see the writer's belongings, letters, drawings and paper cutouts, together with numerous editions of his books. You can listen to the fairy tales or have a look at pages of his books on the computer screen. A fascinating place for children and adults alike. The enormous flower swan in front of the building is part of the town's yearly Flower Festival, dedicated to the great writer this year. The ugly duckling that he himself had been turned into the beautiful swan he became later in life. Opening hours: daily 9.00 - 19.00, 1.09 -15.06 - 10.00 - 16.00 Admission: Adults - DKK 50, children - DKK 20 Leave a Comment Address: Bangs Boder 29 DK-5000 Odense C

By the time Odense is mentioned for the first time in official records in 988, it was already the diocese of a bishop but had also been the centre of the Odin Cult, from which the town takes its name. The first church on the site of the present cathedral was erected around 1095, to be later converted, extended and altered many times. Yet, it still remains a splendid example of the Gothic style. The church was dedicated to St. Knud - King Knud of Denmark between the years 1080 - 1086, who was killed by rebels on 10 July 1086. More about him in the tip on St. Albani Church. When inside, try and see the crypt housing a tombstone with his earthly remains. We couldn't do that as when we were there, the church was about to be closed - on a Saturday morning - how strange. Opening hours (so their website says): Mon. - Sat. 10-16, Sun. 12-15 Admission free. Leave a Comment Address: Klosterbakken 2, 5000 Odense 3Phone: 66 12 0392Directions: Next to the Town Hall Square

It was here in this tiny cottage with a sloping roof that the great writer was born on 2 April 1805 to a poor cobbler and his wife. His family moved two years later to what is now known as Andersen's Childhood Home, where he lived until he was thirteen when he went by himself to Copenhagen to work , study and...... see the real theatre which had been his dream for years. Though he had not lived in the first house long, it is that place that has become part of a museum devoted to him. You may well wonder, on trying the door why the house is locked. Yet, looking through the low window, you will see people and various artefacts inside. There is no information on the door how to get in and yet everybody seemed to know where to find the entrance. So just follow the others and they will show you the way. Leave a Comment Address: Hans Jensen Straede

The cathedral is certainly worth a look inside. It was a very short look in my case as we were shown the door soon after we entered. A man was saying something to us in Danish indicating the door. However, having noticed the marvellous altar, I pretended not to understand him and went on towards it. I begged him to let me take just one picture - for the Internet (yes, I used VT, but for a worthy cause). I insisted and he gave up. Here is the result. The altarpiece, carved by Claus Berg and centering around the motif of Christ's Crucifixion, dates back to about 1521 and comprises over 300 figures. If you want to see it magnified, visit the cathedral's website. The church also has a magnificent organ and is the venue of many concerts. I would have liked to see the crypt as well - but no chance. The monument to Hans Christian Andersen is situated in front of the Town Hall. The great writer is quite formally dressed, wearing a waistcoat under his jacket and a scarf but his trouser legs are rolled up and he is barefooted - a reference to the poverty he suffered in his childhood and youth I suppose. Or perhaps to show his sympathy for the poor and disdain for appearances and pretence. Leave a Comment

Den Fynske Landsby / The Funen Village is an interesting open-air-museum consisting of about 30 traditional buildings of the good old times of the 17th, 18th and 19th century. It is similar to "Den Gammle By" in Aarhus, but much smaller of course and many of these houses had been taken apart in various villages on the island of Fyn and set togeather in that museum again, so you have the feeling this is an old, genuine village with a mills, a black-smith, a tiny schoolhouse, a church and many farmhouses with live-stock. In this museum you may watch the farmers working with their old methods - a great place to visit for families with children. The Funen-village is open for visitors : 1. April – 30. "Hans-Christian Andersen-village" is of course not the real name of this part of Odense, but it is the area around of the H.C. Andersen-museum and his house of birth and it exsisted already a long time before he was born there in 1805 in this part of the city. These buildings are in fact a lot smaller than ordinary houses and this surroundings might also have had some influence for the fairy-tales of Odense's most famous son. The Hans Christian Andersen museum is open : 2 January to 15 June, Tue to Sun, 10.00 - 16.00 16 June to 15 August, Mon to Sun, 9.00 - 18.00 16 August to 30 December, Tue to Sun, 10.00 - 16.00 The museum is open on Feb. 12th+19th, march 9th, may 28th, and oct.15th The museum is closed on December 24th, 25th and 31st ------------- Admission is 60 DDK for adults and children are free untill 17 Leave a Comment

Probably the building did not look the same at the time but it was here that King Knud of Denmark was slain on 10 July 1086 when he fled to Odense after a peasant revolt. His tragic death is said to have been followed by a number of miracles and poor harvests till the time he was canonised. His body is now buried in the crypt of the cathedral, which was named after him. The skeleton bears evidence of a lesion in the pelvic area, presumably caused by a club swung from behind, thus supporting the tradition that the king was killed while on his knees praying before the high altar. Unfortunately, the church was closed and the plaque by the door was in Danish only, so I could only make out it was St. Albani Kirke, no more. A pity - the building looked so pretty and imposing at the same time. Leave a Comment

Egeskov looks like a fairy-tale-castle, built on an island in a small lake about 40 km south of Odense. The castle is still inhabited by the family of Count Michael Ahlefeldt-Laurig-Bille and had been in posession of his family for more than 200 years now. The wide park of Egeskov slot is open to the public. You have to pay an entrance fee of 60,- Danish Kronas and then you can see all museums there and the deer-park, a huge tree-house and a baroque garden-labyrinth. The castle and museums are open from April to September from 10.00 a.m. till 05.00 p.m. in july even untill 08.00 p.m. Entrance-fee to the park is 60,- DKR extra-fee to visit the castle interior : 55,- DKR Leave a Comment Address: DK-5772-Kvaerndrup - Egeskov slotPhone: +45 62 27 10 16Directions: Take the road #9 from Odense to Svendborg the you change to road #8 at Kvaerndrup and go westwards and there you will see plenty of sign-posts for the castleWebsite: www.egeskov-slot.dk

I live just across the street from Odense Zoo which is one of the most modern and most visited zoo's in Denmark. Recently expanded and quite big, despite the location near the center of the city. Abig South American area was added a few years ago along with the 'Oceanium' - which is the most popular attraction these days. The Oceanium takes you on a journey through the huge continent and gives you the chance to see both manatees, piranhas, tropical fish and a lot of different penguins, who all lives under very good conditions. The manatees are quite rare in European zoo's, and have become kind of a trademark for the zoo in Odense. Besides the Oceanium, you'll get to see red pandas, camels, tigers, giant turtles, lions, monkeys, sea lions, seals, kangaroos, zebras, giraffes and many more of the well-known and popular animals in this beautiful 'park', where the prices are at an okay level.
