Again, as was the case in 1995, we failed to visit the interior of the Andersen Museum, but this time for a legitimate reason: we arrived in town only in the course of the afternoon and we had to leave again the next morning. But we did make some pictures of the garden surrounding the museum!

I'd have to check, but I believe this was the Church of Sankt Hans in Odense.

The Funen Village is an open-air museum that presents a Funen village milieu as it appeared in the time of Hans Christian Andersen. A visit to the museum is like travelling back to the 19th century. A village milieu has been recreated here comprising half-timbered houses, flower gardens, fences, a village pond and a village street ? and all surrounded by cultivated fields. A grazing cow or goat occasionally comes to view, as geese strut about from pond to courtyard. Visitors can follow the farming of the common field in the views between the buildings, observe old Danish livestock breeds, and inspect examples of Funen kitchen and ornamental gardens as well as gardens of cultivated plants and old, local varieties of fruit trees.

Coming from railway families in England and Sweden, we are happy when we can take the opportunity to see a national museum. The Danish one has a good collection of engines as you would expect, and an interesting exhibition on the Orient Express. However, I have to say I missed something on the WORKERS of the railway, which you get in Sweden. To be fair to the Danes, they don't have the harsh climate of Lapland to build railways in, but it is still nice to pay tribute to those who slaved by building a country's railways. That is not to say that I didn't enjoy myself. I found the information on Danish railways during the war very interesting, with engineers' drawings hidden to save them from destruction. I also enjoyed the double-decker commuter train! Finally, the very special Danish thing here is of course the relation between trains and ferries. A nation full of islands and only recently with more bridges, there are lots of ships models and other such information on trains at sea.

I have never been that keen on Andersen throughout my childhood, as I often found his stories too tragic. However, as far as interesting personalities go, I have become interested in him as an adult, and this is thanks to this museum. It is built in a park at the back of his presumed birth house (the yellow one) and here, you get his whole story, put in relation to what else was happening in the world at the time. There is also a library with all his books in all translated languages. It is a huge amount of languages and also includes a data bank where you can look for copies of the books. You also get a collection of Andersen sketches and travelogues as he was a keen traveller (although his poor English did not impress Dickens with whom he stayed for six weeks). You can follow his travels too, which is of course fun to a VT member as you see which were the cultural places in Andersen's days - much the same as today :) In the basement, there is a room dedicated to real Andersen gadgets and here, you will find the rope he always brought with him to be able to escape hotel fires, his hat and his bed amongst other things.

Adjacent to the museum is a house for children (see the travelogue) and there are also shops, both there and in the museum itself. The park outside sometimes has a stage in summer, where Andersen's stories are put up. Summer of 2005 was a bit special because of the Andersen jubilee, but then there was a medley of stories and the narrator (Torben Iversen) impressively kept track of both Danish, Swedish, English and German titles to explain what we saw.
