The Odense City Museum (Montergarden ) is a museum complex of different buildings that can show you several architectural styles in Odense from the late-medieval period to around 1900.
Pic 1 shows the main building at Overgade where we got into the museum.
Pic 2 shows the barn that is located at the inner yard, It was built in the mid 17th century as back premises to a merchant’s house in Nuborg. It has hatches instead of windows and a spacious mansard roof.
We were very tired to check most of them so we focused our visit to the main buildings of the museum, I liked the exhibition about Funen’s early history with interesting facts about daily life in the prehistoric period. Other parts in the museum focus on Middle Ages and Renaissance periods. The info signs are very useful which makes the visit more pleasant because in museums like that you don’t really get excited to check every tiny stone but it’s always interesting to know how people were using this stone…
The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday 10.00-16.00
The entrance fee is 40DKK

H.C.Andersen's Childhood Home (H.C.Andersens Barndomshjem ) is just the small house where Andersen spent his childhood. Actually what we saw was a building that is a replica of the original one.
If you visit the H.C.Andersen museum first you will be disappointed here, there are only two small rooms with some information and drawing but you cant really spend a lot of time here although I found it interesting to see where small Hans was spending his time as a child. By the way -just to imagine how small it is- the original building was only 17 square meters, with a sitting room, a kitchen and a small hallway.
The museum opened in 1931 and due to the small space they used another room (actually the area that small hallway connects with the house) as part of the museum. We werent expecting to see unfurnished rooms though, ok the house is full of memories but we felt disappointed about that but we tried to read every not, small poem or other words on the wall’s collection so to feel a bit better :)
Pic 5 shows another building that is related to Andersen, it’s probably the one that he was born at.
It is open Tuesday to Sunday 10-16.00
The entrance fee is 25DKK or free with the City Pass (also free for those under 17)

Funen Village(Den Fynske Landsby) is an open air museum that represents a typical village environment from 19th century. It opened to the public right after WWII and houses numerous rural buildings, half-timbered buildings, a village pond and some farm animals. First we saw a small video introduction (15’ long) at the Visitors Centre about life during the 19th century and then we walked into the village (they give you a small map for free but it’s not big to get lost anyway)
During the summer months they have a lot of activities, usually traditional agriculture etc but during our visit most of the visitors (especially those with kids) were packed in the theatre watching a play for kids.
We walked a bit around, there are some really picturesque corners but we felt disappointed of the general area, ok the buildings cover a long period (17th to 19th century), there are recreated buildings from villages all over Fyn island but we were expecting to see more than the usual although if it’s the first of its kind that you visit you may like the mill, the black smith, the small church etc The people that do demonstrations seem to be bored under the sun too :)
Although you can easily walk everywhere you may want to try the horse carriage rides
The opening times depends on the season:
April to June, Tue-Sun - 10:00-17:00;
July to August, Mon-Sun - 10:00-19:00;
September and October, Tue-Sun - 10:00-17:00;
November to March, Sunday - 11:00-15:00
The entrance fee is 60DKK(or free with City Pass)

The school of Hans Christian Andersen is in a sidestreet not far from the old part of Odense and the building looks very nice from outside. Unfortunately you cannot visit it inside, but at least you will find a note about H.C. Andersen on its facade. This building was used as a school untill 1847.

Saint Albani Kirke is the roman catholic church of Odense with an interesting facade, but unfortunately it was closed while I was there last time in May 2011!
When you take a closer look at the facade of this church you will see some great decorations of green glass or maybe green bricks between the normal facade of red and white bricks !

The townhall of Odense is mainly popular among the tourists and locals, because of the monument for Hans Christian Andersen in front of it : some people say it is good for a lucky partnership, when a young couple touches that monument, who knows, if that helps anything... (see H.C.Andersen in my last 2 photos here)
When I was in Odense they had a meeting of vintage-cars, as you will see on my 1st picture, all of the other pics were made in 2011 and the building was unfortunately under reconstruction.

Odense is the third largest city of Denmark, located at Funen island(between Sealand and Jutland). It’s about 160km west of Copenhagen, it took us 90’ to reach Odense by train.
