On your way to Valdemar's Slot you will pass by some really great halftimbered and straw-thatched houses and a part of them are used as a hotel.
It is always great to see such wonderful buildings in the traditional danish rural architecture.

Valdemar's Slot was built in the bay of Svendborg and surrounded by the sea from 2 sides and in addition there is a lake as well inside the castle-innercourt (see it in my 1st picture) When you walk through the 2nd gate-house you will see the sea of the bay of Svendborg (my last photo)

These are the 2 gate-houses of Valdemar's Slot. One of them is the entrance for visitors and the other one is now giving access to the beach in the back of the castle and also access to the car-parking for people coming to the restaurant. These gates is only 2,2 meters wide and 2,4 meters high, so In had to stay outside, but there is a large carparking also in front of the 1st gate.

In their brochure they claim that this is the only place on earth, where you will find a restaurant directely under the church. I am quite sure that this is not an unique situation, but who cares, it is an interesting constellation anyway.
I did not go to that reastaurant, it was still too early in the morning, but it looks nice through the windows and is certainly worth a stop, when you are hungry.

Valdemar's Slot is a great castle outside of Svendborg and what-ever you see on this page about this castle you can see free of charge.
When you want to see the interior of the palace, you have to pay an entrance-fee and I skipped that simply because photography is totally forbidden inside.

I don't know the name of the church, but the bell ringing here is the most beautiful I have ever heard. It rings at 12 o'clock and it takes not 1 minute as usually, but 5 minutes for sure or even longer. Great melodies.

The old part of Svendborg is a nice place for a walk. When the shops are working, lot of clothes are taken out, so the streets are much different than in the evening. Walking the streets you will find some small cosy streets, corners, churches and views.

A nice place just to walk aroung in Svendborg is the market square you see in my picture. I don't know exactly when is the market taking place there, but it is there on Saturdays till about 1p.m. for sure. Sometimes there are small open air free concerts in this square. All the old town of Svendborg is around that place. Old buildings, streets, shops, cafes, enjoy it!

Sankt Nicolai Kirke is the oldest building in Svendborg. It was built in the first half of the 13th century and is protected by the patron saint of sea farers; Saint Nicolaus. (Yes; Santa!) The church is built in late romanic style but parts has been added later so like with other churches it is a bit of a mix of different styles.
The church is open all days except monday.

Christian's Mill was built in 1837 by the miller Christian Klingenberg for Kaptajn Moelmark. The milling stopped in 1958 and the mill is now a protected building.
Different milling equipment are kept inside.
You can get to see it from inside if you contact Svendborg Museum at

The hill where the mill stands offer great views of the town, the sea and the neigbouring island of Taasinge (where I lived all my childhood). The wings of the mill are fitted with lights so that you can see it at night. Beautiful!

Valdemars Slot is an interesting castle a bit outside of Svendborg. It is a pity that photography was forbidden INside the castle !

Svendborg is quite far south on the island of Funen, which makes it an ideal starting point for ferries to the smaller islands. The town itself is quite picturesque, and is not a bad place at all to...
