the airport hot dog stand

Favorite thing: in copenhagen airport ehy have opened a traditional danish hot dog stand, so while you are waiting for your luggage upon arrival you do not need to bore yourself silly but can start embracing danish culture right away with danish hot dogs and beer.
i really like this initiative as the luggage arrival hall is very often the most boring place in an airport.

Fondest memory: they have a combo with hot dogs and beer that i always take advantage of.

Local food markets

Favorite thing: This is for the tourists who want to have a shot at Danish everyday shopping.
Especially I'd like to help out tourists who say that food (not restaurant food but snacks and similar) is expensive in Denmark. Even in city, even superclose to the central station, you can find discount stores, that we danes shop in on an everyday basis.
I would suggest markets like Rema 1000 (there's one close to Tivoli's main gates), Netto and Aldi for cheap sodas, snacks etc. At least it's as cheap as it gets in Denmark. especially Aldi often looks very outdated ^^ don't be fooled though. for ryebread(sp?), ham, milk or other everyday necessities in Denmark, it's really a cheap alternative. similar goes for snacks, toothpaste and booze and so on (pretty bad combination though;) ) many of the shops have their own value brand like Tesco's value.
The shops can give a little insight in danish everyday food habits, and an inexpensive shot at trying the ryebread.

As a little bonus info .. as far as I know, Aldi sells the cheapest cola in Denmark, at 3 krs for 0.5 litres. Ironically, it is my favorite cola after Coca Cola :D

the bigger markets such as Føtex, Bilka, Superbrugsen can vary in price, often they are a bit more expensive than above shops. I wouldn't go to Irma, as it is notorious for quality products, but at a higher price than other shops, while still being in the group of common food markets.
the same goes for 7 11 and kiosks that are on every streetcorner. expect a slightly higher price.

In short my advice is, as a tourist, when you see Netto, Rema1000 and Aldi shops, stock up on basic necessities.

Baresso

Favorite thing: We stopped off for a coffee and cake at the Baresso Coffee Shop located along Storget.

It was friendly and relaxing. The staff are very professional and know good coffee!

Sitting upstairs gives you a good view of the passing world.

The store also sells coffee beans and will grind these to order.

Favorite thing: The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration handle food control at places selling food; restaurants, snack-bars, pizzerias, bakeries, butchers, greengrocer etc. All retail enterprises are obliged to display the latest inspection report so it is visible to consumers, and all inspection reports are available on the Internet. To show the results in an easy way smiley-faces with a different degree of smile are used.
After each inspection the report is available at the Smiley website on the Internet, and the retail enterprise in question must display the report so it is visible to consumers. The Smiley website shows the latest four inspection reports to give consumers an idea of the enterprise’s results over a period of time.

Fondest memory: Read more about the smileys here, as you will encounter them everywhere: http://www.uk.foedevarestyrelsen.dk/Food/Smiley/forside.htm

Favorite thing: If you are in Copenhagen or in any city of Denmark for more than just several days or even living there for a while, you'll need food shops. If you are on the low budget Netto (with yellow dog sign), Aldi, Fakta is for you. There is also Dog Netto (with blue dog sign) which opens later than others and works later also (until 10 p.m.). A great choise when all food shops are already closed. In these shops you'll find the lowest prices for the food, although the variety of it is not always big. For the variety you can choose Irma or Fotex, but the prices there are higher.

Butcher shops

Meat!!

Favorite thing: You can find butcher shops throughout the city. If you are staying at a friends and wanna cook I would say that this is the way to do it. The meat is extreamly fresh and they will prepare it however you ask. You may pay a liitle more than you would at a grocery store but the quality is well worth the price.

Smoked Mackeral

Favorite thing: This is just one of the markets that you can go to buy fresh seafood. Being a coastal town the fresh fish is excellent and definitly a part of the Danish diet. I tried the smoked eel and just about got sick!!l It was wat too oily and fatty!!!But alot of people seem to enjoy it..However..I do see alot of the smoked mackeral and wan't to try that one. I also asked about the eggs next to the Mackeral and they were Grouse eggs...and people eat them raw...ok ..that's where I draw the line. The only food I eat raw is sushi ,and yet have to see a sushi shop here in town.Oh well. As far as prices go everything is a pretty good deal. so make it a point to check one out.
